Note to make things easier. When setting up each device I named them individually. Twinkly 1, twinkly 2 twinkly 3 and so on. I then took a silver sharpie and wrote that name on the power block on 3 sides so I could see the name from most angles. Once named that is what you will see in the app for each device. I also wrote the name on each box. That made my life much easier. I like to create new groups and do different things with them so an easy naming of each really helped.

Is there any benefit to including the String's original Twinkly_xxxxxx designation in the name? I've done it with and without. Wonder what troubleshooting etc. might require it.

Twinkly app update 12/7/20. After updating the app a firmware update is needed on gen II devices. The first few I tried to update it failed and I lost connection with those devices. I did the following to get them back on. 1. Restarted my IPhone. 2. The devices that failed on the firmware update I unplugged the device, after plugging back in you get the option to update again. That worked on 4 of my devices that failed to update.

@jasonduvall1

I bought them on Amazon a few months ago. I had some Gen I last year so I watched all year and bought gen IIs as I saw them on sale. You can map each individually and tile them together but I think that’s the hard way. I mapped these as 1 big scene. If you read some of my other responses you will see my notes about staying connected to WiFi and trying to stand far enough back to map it all together.

I have a set up of 16 Twinkly devices on a dedicated router all around my house and roof lines, driveway and sidewalk. RGBW and about 5,650 LED’s total. Most of the time I join them together opposed to as scene so I can do 3D mapping, but it takes around 85 steps and usually crashes. 2d is definitely easier, but doesn’t map everything. How did you get 2d mapping to pick up around the turns and up high?
@jasonduvall1
@jasonduvall1 3 жыл бұрын
I just uploaded a new video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ebxlqNWnya20dpc.html with 4,600 lights on the front of the house now. I also have about 1,200 inside the house. I do not have a dedicated router and I am now starting to get some crashes and errors. I think I am pushing my router to its limit and may need to go the dedicated path. I’ve been lucky with 2d mapping, I can get out far enough into the street to map everything at once. There are a few spots out of site that are not in sync as much as I would like. I have not tried tiling individual mapped lights yet. May try that this weekend.

Just to make sure we are on the same page I dont have the twinkly pros I have the regular gen 2s. The only difference in what I have done in programming vs programming a single set is creating a group in the twinkly app then selecting large scene. After that you run through the mapping just like normal in the app on your phone. Note that 3D mapping isn’t an option when selecting large scene. These are regular gen 2s, not pros. I will guess you are having the same issue I had mapping a large area. You have to be back far enough to get your set up in the view of your camera. I found a few times that I was to far from my router so I was dropping from my home WiFi and my phone was going to cellular data without me knowing it. When you lose your WiFi it will not map. They're great when they work, but a real pain when they don't. Got a 400 led string, and they just plain refuse to work through the home router. The app sees them, asks for network password, then nothing. Same thing after firmware update. Resetting and trying didn't work as well. Saw suggestions to disable 5g network, turned it off on the router, which yielded (predictably) no results. And there's no provision for 3d mapping when connected directly. They could do it by caching the pictures and uploading it from the app after switching back to home network, but well, looks like when you're out of luck, you're on your own.
@jasonduvall1
@jasonduvall1 Жыл бұрын
I think once you get the hang of it they are fairly easy to use. After you connect them to your router make sure you reconnect your phone to your router. The biggest problem I had when I first started was understanding that your phone has to be connected to your WiFi after your lights are connected to the WiFi. If you drop WiFi and switch to data it won’t work.

Will do my best to explain 1. The palm tree on the left has one set of 600 on it. 2. The bushes behind the palm tree have one set of 600. This includes the small bushes under the windows. 3. Starting from the left (behind the palm tree) the roof line has one set of 600. That set goes from the left all the way to the right and returns down the side of my house about 20 feet (can’t be seen in video) The one set of 600 was enough to run two lines. One upper and another about 3 inches lower. Basically half of the 600 was enough to go all the way across. Hope I explained this well enough. 4. The garage roof line is one set of 600. This goes from my entry door across the front (over the garages) and returns roughly 30 feet down my side yard that can’t be seen in the video. I also did two lines here. One upper and a second a few inches lower just like the upper roof line. 5. At the garage doors. One set of 600 again with two lines run. This set framed the garage doors and covered some of the bushes to the left of the garage. 6. One set of 600 to complete the bushes next to the garage. Hopefully this is helpful. Did you ever Sync Group or Join Group these strings before doing this Scene Group? I understand a Group has to be Deleted to make former content Strings available to include in a different Group. I wonder if they also have to be Reset or remapped before tasking them to a different group. Maybe the unique Large Scene 2-D Mapping overrides a String's mapping it has from a Sync group which demands individual 3-D String Mapping before assigning to the group.

@@jasonduvall1 Ah, then it is simply remapped according to the type of new group. So, in order to assign a given String to a group, it can not already be a member of another different group? Most of them came from amazon. Best Buy usually has them on sale on their website. Seems like September is the best time to buy, that’s when I notice them at the lowest price at various retailers.

Great job!! Did you have to use a lot of extension cords? I was reading that the strings don’t connect end to end...
@jasonduvall1
@jasonduvall1 3 жыл бұрын
I have way less extension cords than I did with my old school lights. With some quick planning I was able to run just about half of the lights from one location and the other half from a second location. I used to run a dozen or more extension cords with my old school lights. With the twinkly like set up I have here I have 3 extension cords.

On your roof line, let’s say the lower one, is that one set of lights? Is your controller in the center or to one side? I set up my lights but I can’t see one side of my house when I’m mapping. I’m trying to figure out how to work around it but I might have to ignore it. I have a 600 and 250 set and the controllers are on opposite sides of the house. I may have to reconfigure.

@@Cheddarbobm the upper roof line is 1 set of 600 and the lower roof line is 1 separate set of 600. On both I have the controller to one side (the left).

Why are the color bands moving vertically on large objects and horizontally on eves when running the same Effect on both? I have this trouble with a Sync group too. One tree is 45 degree skewed compared to the other.
@jasonduvall1
@jasonduvall1 3 жыл бұрын
Has to do with the angle of where you map from. I mapped from the same location that I shot the video from. From that location the phone is looking up at an angle at the house. Ideally you want to be as straight on and level as possible.

@@jasonduvall1 Ah, that's not mentioned in their many guides. I made a 2-shrub Sync group with the new multi-photo 3-D Mapping. They are only 3 foot high globes. I happened to map the first one standing up. I kneeled for the other. The first one displays what is supposed to be horizontal color bands at a 45 degree diagonal. Its Color Carousel effect converge point location is horribly different too. Also, possibly the location of the 'converge' point (visual location where some Effects rotate about or radiate to/from) is determined by where you aim the first Mapping shot on the object. I had only done a Join group until this year. Didn't expect a Sync group to be so finicky.

Each Twinkly strand of lights has its own controller. You can map them as a single strand or group multiple sets together. From the twinkly app.

@jasonduvall1

I ran two straight lines. An upper and lower. They are roughly 3 inches apart. That’s what gives it a clustered or beefy look. I used a hot glue gone because my facia is stucco. Hopefully this answers your question.

The gen 2s I have are listed as IP weatherproof. Doing a quick internet search says that means “protected against solid objects that are bigger than 1mm and water splashing from all directions”. I have mine set up in a way that the controller is protected from direct rain or water. Other than that I would direct you to the twinkly web site for more info. www.twinkly.com
