Rick Allen's story is not only an inspiration of overcoming the loss of his arm, but also of his band mates. It is a true testament to his band mates that they did not take the easy way out by replacing Rick Allen. It appears that unlike most bands, these guys actually love each other. It would have been so easy for them to insist on changing drummers. That is just one of the reasons I hold this band in such high esteem.

Rick Allen, the drummer, lost his arm when he was 21. He'd been with the band since he was 15. At the height of their success, they waited until he healed and re-taught himself how to play. He has a special kit, in which his left pedal could emulate what his left arm could do. He still suffers PTSD from the accident to this day and sees drumming and painting as therapeutic healing for him.

Verchielx- that was about the best explanation of Ricks accident, and the Bands loyalty I’ve ever heard. Broke down into just a few sentences. And I think you’re the first person EVER to talk about his PTSD! I really appreciate that. As a fellow (PTSDer) this does not get mentioned enough. Esp since Ricks battle is nothing short of a musical prodigy story. His fight back, new drum kit, the Bands loyalty to him. Esp when Rick hit his lowest of Lows. And that he still struggles with it. And that he is in fact an AWESOME PAINTER. Perfect Answer! Have not seen one better!!

You have to give Mad Respect to the members of Def Leppard. When their drummer got in to a car accident and lost his arm they refused to tour, or even cut another record without him. A special drum set was made so he could use his one arm, and his feet to play the drums. He had to learn to play the drums from scratch using only one arm and his feet.

I think it was three years from accident to stage..Most bands would not have waited. Joe Elliott said it wasn't even a thought they would wait...like you said respect for the loyalty.

And the fact that the band waited for him to relearn how to play with one arm instead of hiring an new drummer. That cost 2.5 years during the prime of their history.

Many other acts probably would have abandoned their drummer and looked for someone else. That level of devotion right there makes one hell of a powerful statement.

Such a great concert, guys. I was at that concert with friends and my two older brothers. February 1988 at McNichols Arena (aka Big Mac) Denver, Colorado. I was 15. The stage slowly spun around so all 22,931 fans, in attendance, could get an equal view. They sounded so much better live than on vinyl. McNichols Arena was demolished in 2000.😞

You mentioned the drummer and his accident. What is remarkable, is his attitude dealing with the adversity. We can all learn a lesson from him. Don't sweat the small stuff. Guys, I really like your videos, keep them going. Nice to see today's youth, appreciative of the 80s Rock. I seriously doubt that generation of rock will be matched. Keep Rocking 🤘🏽🤘🏽

I think too we look back and don’t realize how absolutely talented they are bc they are in their 20’s here! They mastered their instruments and their ability to perform it all amazingly! If you really want to understand Rick Allen losing an arm their are interviews w the band and docs it’s definitely worth doing a review on bc SOOOO many things had to come together for him to live and comeback!!!

I grew up on Def Leppard. This concert was actually recorded on Friday, February 12th, 1988, at McNichols Arena in Denver, Colorado where the Denver Nuggets played their home games. On the previous night (February 11th), the Los Angeles Lakers went into that building and defeated the Nuggets. That was significant in the fact that it was only the Nuggets' 4th home loss that season. And the Lakers would go on to win their last championship with Magic Johnson. Unfortunately for the Nuggets, to this day they still have never even made it to the NBA Finals; they have made it to the western conference finals four times (1978, 1985, 2009, 2020), but never advanced any further. ... I will be turning fifty later this year (in September), and and we were spoiled with great music back then, and Def Leppard was among the greatest. I was in 8th grade in February 1988 when that concert was recorded, and it would have been a dream to be there. Cheers from northeast Ohio.

Def Leppard had amazing harmony when Steve Clark , the soloist was alive. He hit a lot of high notes in choruses that Joe Elliott gets the credit for. I thought it was Joe too until I watched enough live performances. Steve wrote Heaven Is. It's a fun song and of course has that great Def Leppard sound.

Rick Allen almost died, thrown from the sunroof of his car, seatbelt torn arm off, luckily a nurse was driving by and saved him....then they thought they had reattached it successfully, but got infected days later almost causing him to lose the other arm...they were making Hysteria at the time and they waited for him as he assured them he would figure out how to play with his feet...the album's delay was legendary, costing the music label to lose millions while waiting for the band (who never turned their backs on their brother)...needed to sell 3M copies just to break even...Hysteria went on to be a top selling album of the era and the Thunder God was born

I did see this tour in Huntsville, Al. It was a 10k seat arena. The stage was in the middle. Back in those days, they called it. "In the round" so the stage rotated. And was right on the middle. No bad seats. Tesla(another rock group in that era,) opened the show. They were equally talented. Check them out. It's great to see guys your age appreciate this music. I'm 63, the 80's were the best.

I first saw Def Leppard in February 1983 in Belfast on the Pyromania tour. I’ve been lucky enough to see them at least once on every tour they’ve done subsequently. I even saw them at Donington Monsters of Rock in 1986 which was the first big live gig Rick Allen had played since losing his arm. It was amazing. He got a standing ovation that went on for ages!! around the time that Rick Allen lost his arm in 1984, electric drums was still an emerging technology and not many groups used them, but Rick did! I don't know if he helped refine the tech of electric drums, but I like to think that he did.

1982 the great guitarist Phil Collen joined. He became extremely close with the late brilliant Steve Clark. As co-lead guitarist Steve and Phil bonded, leading to the trademark dual-guitar sound of Def Leppard. Collen and Clark became known The Terror Twins Pyromania (1983) albums 1/2 weren’t that commercially successful in the US , but as soon as pyromania was released the rest is history .. one if the most successful bands out there

It is an electric drum kit and he has special pedals that he uses on the left foot. His new rig setup allows him to play the parts he used to play with his left arm using his left foot. He also has a computer that is programmed to change up the drums depending on the song he needs. So if he needs a particular sound out of the drums for a certain song he can alter each drum pad before the song starts and then when he hits that corresponding pedal it plays whatever drum he was supposed to have in real life. There's a really cool KZfaq video It's very brief but it's an interview with one of the guys that's responsible for setting up his drum kit. It is a very specialized drum kit that he worked very hard with some designers to come up with. His resilience in the bands willingness to not give up on him is stuff of legend.

It was an amazing testiment to the strength of their friendship that they took time off for Rick to not only recover from the accident but fir him to learn ti drum one handed! The drum kit utilizes foot pedals to replace his left side, it was state of the art back then. They are definitely one of the best groups to come out of the `80s. They are still touring today!

The drums are electronic. They’re called Simmons drums, and were used heavily in the 80’s especially. Because of Rick only having one arm, he needs to use electronic drums. His kit is customized, to allow foot pedals to trigger the drum parts he would otherwise be playing with his left arm.

Huge Def Leppard fan... Have seen them in concerts more times than I can count. Been listening to them since the 1970's and all through the years to include Their latest album Diamond Star Halos just came out last year. Joe is still rocking it and Rick Allen on Drums is an inspiration to many young drummers. He has both, traditional drums mixed in with electric drum kit. What he used to play with his left arm he plays with his feet. He has many different drum pedal kits for his feet depending on what he's wanting the sound to be.

Because of Rick Allen's arm loss, it set the album's production back for years, 4 years to be exact. Just to break even, they would have had to sell 5 millions albums. The album stalled out at 3 million in early 1988, so the studio decided to throw out a video for PSSOM. It was hastily recorded in Colorado, at the Denver concert, and as a result gave the album sales new legs. To date, the album has sold over 25 million copies and Def Leppard are one of only five bands to have two albums reach double diamond.

Rick Allen is the drummer. He lost his arm in a car accident on Dec. 31st, 1984. He was determined to play again. The rest of the band waited on him til he was ready to play again. Rick had an engineer that developed a second foot pedal so he could play with his left foot, which he used to play with his left arm.

I saw them 5 times over their early career. They played in the round, which really unusual at the time (notice the opening light show setup). We were right there in their face and loved every minute... My favorite vocalist of that era is Klaus Mein from the Scorpions. His vocal range and control is exceptional! Winds of Change is a good place to start ~ it is a song about when the wall came down between east and west Germany. Still Loving You shows off Klaus' vocals. I love music of all genres, though Country is a favorite because of the storylines. I follow writers, not groups. Eric Church, "That's Damn Rock N Roll" highlights his writing ability. He is an intimate instrumentalist as well, big on detail. Stick That In Your Country Song is also noteworthy. Keep up the good vibes 🙂
