For hands, I had a dance teacher tell me to imagine holding a small frog with your fingers lol. Thought that was pretty creative!

I've started taking modern classes and my teacher never counted. At the beginning this bothered me so much, being used to 1-8 counts, but it forced me to feel the music and trust my gut. Now I'm so thankful for this !!

Could you possibly do a video on musicality? It is something that I'm always trying to improve, but don't know exactly how to.

Hi Celia! I did make one or two videos about how to improve your musicality in either 2017 or early 2018. Scroll through my older videos and you'll find them!

Hi, I'm 13 and I have a huge love and passion for ballet! I wanna do it so bad! I just don't know how to do it. I feel like it might be too late for me to start. If I did beginning ballet, everyone would be five...that might be awkward. I'm not sure what to do... Do u have any advice?

You'll actually most likely start with 10-11 year olds. They'll be much better than you at first, yet if you work hard your age will allow you to be more aware and apply corrections and pick it up. You'll find yourself quickly rising through levels (maybe even skipping one!) at your studio. Follow your dreams! Hope this help!

@Megan, if it's your passion, please do it. Passions are timeless, and even if they're weren't, you're still young enough to start. It's not too late. My advice to you is to find beginners ballet tutorial videos here on TY (there's a lot) and follow along. Do this for awhile, but *please* don't push yourself too hard. Listen to your body. Don't over do it or push beyond what your body can do. but when you start improving, there will come a time where you won't feel nearly as awkward in regards to being in an actual ballet class with other students who might be younger. Also, when you're in class, because ballet is very techincal, everyone is so focused on the instructor, the warm ups, the positions, the dancing, etc... that I think will make it less awkward for you. I hope this helps you, even a bit...

@Megan, You're very welcome, I'm glad to help. I can feel the passion you have for Ballet just by reading your comment. In regards to what I wrote about watching tutorials, that was not so much regarding your age in terms of being in a beginners class, but more so to give you an idea what to expect in a beginners class. But, there are classes out there for beginners that do not have strict age requirements. For example, where I live, there are dance studios that have ballet classes for beginners, but the age range is more mixed and diverse, so you might want to look into that. I can understand how it can feel awkward if you're older than the other students, but, as i said, because ballet is so technical, everyone will be so focused on what they're doing, including yourself, that if anyone notices you're older, that will pass by very fast! Best of luck to you. Always follow your dreams and they shall come true!...

Is there any way to know if you have the capacity to be a professional ballet dancer? I have a huge passion for ballet and am minoring in dance at college, but I am nervous that I might not be able to become a professional in the future. What do most companies look for? Are there certain qualities that make a dancer more desirable for a company?
@bethw6027
@bethw6027 6 жыл бұрын
Emma Schulte I know that you have to work so incredibly hard to be a professional dancer but ballet especially. You have to put yourself out there and grow constantly sometimes without any noticeable or career stabilizing rewards/pay off. Also takin into account what level or place in life you would consider to be your ultimate goal right now. Are you looking for success regardless of the company and its prestige or is your terms of own professional goal determined by which company you dance for? When the latter of the those questions is chosen the amount of realistic attainability narrows drastically. This is mostly due to the sheer amount of competition for limited spots. And given that the toll of ballet on the body gives you only a small window of peak performance time, there is never time for hesitance if it's something you are capable of. Capability often comes into play when companies are looking for what you have to offer them. Obviously different companies have different qualities they're looking for in any given audition season for the level of technique and performance they want. Also given the basis of what standard qualities a ballerina typically has can be a huuuuge factor in capacity of becoming a professional. The ballet world has definitely become more accepting than it once was but more often the list of qualities are still taken into account. Things like height, weight/muscle build, bone structure (like your feet) and technical execution and deliverance overshadow everything else. This doesn't mean that if those typical "norms" aren't there that you won't be successful, again it just narrows the chances of easier attainability and put more stress on having to work harder than others for the same results. But if it's something your passionate about more than anything else than you'll have that helpful motivation to really pursue what you want. Always look up specific companies and what other people have done to get into them and what the company wants from you. It's not an easy road and even if you get all the way up, the risks of injury or replacement are very real and very common. So it all comes down to how much can you invest into it? For me personally I never really had a chance of actually considering being a pro ballet dancer even though I love it so much because I can't check all of those qualification boxes. I was really upset when I thought I could never be involved in dance past a certain age but I have since found adult ballet classes that are safe for my body and still challenge me and keep me learning and improving. While it's not what I dreamed of as a child it's still so important and worth while to me. It's hard to come to terms with it at times but I'm okay with it in the end and that's what's the most important thing for you to achieve. Sorry this was so long winded but it is definitely a specific set of criteria that is worldwide with rare variants. I hope this is somehow helpful though if you end up getting through all of this lol but I wish you luck in your future endeavors!

Look up theraband exercise routines on KZfaq for foot and ankle strength! That's a great place to start. Also, doing slow double and single leg calf raises are great for building the lower leg strength you'll need.

+Chronically Cassidy If you apply them right away it does work! I tell my students these things when I teach, and I can instantly tell the difference. However, this would totally be clickbait if I was addressing matters of strength, endurance, or flexibility because those obviously take time ☺️
