Fishing with Rod

6 ай бұрын

We spent a day in late October fishing the Harrison River in BC Canada with my friend Mark Penner who is a local Fraser Valley fishing guide. Coho salmon was the target species by twitching jigs, with a couple surprise catches. Thanks to @LifeOfLindaLee for operating the cameras most of that day!

Really............... You are part of the problem with the number of people on the Vedder.. Now showing videos on other rivers... Not hard to figure out where you are... Just because you are from an area that has millions of people does not mean you need to destroy more rivers in BC Get a real job and quit posting videos

Hey Rod, thank you for your content I just recently moved to the island from centeral bc always loved fishing grew up in the Adriatic Sea! Thank you for posting such informative content not being your typical fisherman and not sharing your honey hole haha! Had great success after binge watching your videos before coming out here! Spend a lot of time fishing alone out here and can’t complain about it at all! Keep up the great work! You should start a fishing school or a guiding outfit I would definitely sign my self up!

Rod. Great to see you finally covering twitching. I have been doing it for years and find it my most successful means of catching Coho. I now make my own Jigs but will use Jig Geek or Jig Box 10 from time to time.

Been a fun season, I've explored a lot of new waterways this year, and had my most successful Vedder chinook trips. I learned a lot of new techniques, and that I really need a heavier fly rod (mines 3wt) because damn that looks fun. Still hoping to strecth this coho season another week or two, then time to transition to steelies! I actually caught my first one last weekend on the cap fishing for Coho.

Really common for folks to cast too far upstream and get snagged If you cast straight across/ slightly down steam you can use the current to control the depth and speed of your retrieve.

In this video, I was using a 6'6" general purpose spinning rod, Shimano Clarus rated 6 to 10lb, which I've really liked for pink, coho, pike, etc. After twitching during this trip, I feel that a slightly longer rod, a 7' or even a 8'6" would be better for this.

Is there a weight on the Jigging setup you’re using ?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 ай бұрын
Yes, the jig head is usually 3/8oz, so heavy enough to do the casts that we were doing.

Question is salmon fishing done at the vedder? I went on Tuesday and the water was so high and moving so fast?!
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 ай бұрын
When water is this high, you want to look for backwaters and side channels which are now high enough yet still slow. Coho salmon could hold in them.

Hey Rod. Ive got a G3 1442 jon boat like yours. Would it be a bad idea to take it to the Harrison river?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 ай бұрын
I know they are capable of running in these rivers but personally I know I'll never do it, simply because I don't feel that I am skilled enough and there's too much risk involved.

The Harrison is generally very shallow with a deeper channel on one side. Not always the same side.

1442 is plenty of boat for the Harrison. I run my 1448 up it all the time . Even up Harrison lake in 6’ waves. Smallest boat I’ve taken on the Harrison was a 10’ spratley . That was dicey but doable. I’d feel very confident and comfortable in your boat.

The Harrison River is much more sheltered than Harrison Lake. When the winds come up on Harrison Lake there are definitely times that our 20’ powerboat doesn’t seem large enough.

Harrison River sockeye are typically the last ones to arrive in the Fraser River and it's not uncommon to find them throughout October.

What tackle should not be used to avoid foul hook Chum? The no Chum fishing is hard to follow since they bite anything
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 ай бұрын
There really isn't one method that would avoid chum salmon completely. Float fishing with a jig is a sure way of catching chum salmon so I avoid using that around them. Float fishing with bead or bait also gets chum salmon from time to time but they also catch coho frequently, so I try to only fish in waters where coho are present while chum salmon are not as abundant. In general, I just avoid fishing at places where chum salmon are not around as much. The coho fishing is also much better at spots where chum salmon are not aggressively swimming around.
