These are two episodes of the TNN (The Nashville Network) game show "Top Card" from 1989 featuring me, John Carney, as a contestant. Apologies for the poor video quality. Here's some more information: / my-15-minutes-of-fame

I was on the 3rd or 4th premiere week episode, then again on "returning contestant week" in 91. So much fun, and the show producers made it a great experience! Even the "runner up" prizes were memorable-26 "Special Effects" stuffed animals and 10 Barnum & Bailey Tickets!

I haven't watched this game show in a long time! I was mesmerized by the cars and other prizes on stage as a little boy.

Coincidentally, Wink replacing Jim on the Great Getaway, is this opposite of Tic Tac Dough in 1985, when he left to host Headline Chasers.

Yes it's true and I do remember watching Caldwell's TTD and Wink's Headline Chasers as they aired back to back in my area on abc affiliate KATC-TV 3 Lafayette, LA right after Good Morning America at 9:00 A.M. and 9:30 A.M.

Another coincidence is that not too long before this, Jim hosted a pilot for The Travel Channel, "The Great Getaway Game". When the show was picked up for series however, they decided to go with Wink.

@@bluebear1985 Would be a riot, if Wink had replaced Jim instead of Don Miller.

I swear there was an episode in season 1 where a contestant said "Todd Card" by mistake and Jim said "It's Top Card not Todd Card!!"

A slight variation of Gambit.

Sounds like you had a pretty interesting experience with this show, and that you came away with something from it, even if it wasn't the biggest prize.

It took a while to refine, but they finally put those cards to good use when they figured out a game to go with them... a nice game called Card Sharks... But, it took a while to get there.... several game shows tried to use a deck of cards to play the game. Most went, ahem, bust.
@marcpower41672 жыл бұрын
Yeah Card Sharks is probably the most famous card game show, but there were quite a few decent ones: Top Card, Gambit & Super Pay Cards immediately come to mind.

Should have gotten a major cash bonus if you got 21 in any round.

What happened to Jim Caldwell after this game show? Was this it as far as game shows were concerned?
@zachhoran6 жыл бұрын
He went from this show to hosting infomercials, which he did for a decade or more for products like Dura Lube. Jim hosted another pilot around 1989 for a show called Great Getaway Game which WInk Martindale co-produced, and ended up hosting when it went to series in 1990 on Travel Channel.
