I go to Starbucks and wait for my friend, sometimes 15-20 minutes, before ordering anything. I can spend 8 hours studying there and nobody would bother me. I can see the manager denying them access to the restroom until they buy something. But calling cops after TWO MINUTES? This comes down to a racist manager who went on a power trip. I hope she's fired.

There are articles out there with Starbucks employees from that location stating that the manager was racist. "She always found a reason to kick Black people out, she was way more likely to ask them to leave over white people who hadn’t made a purchase... And when it came to serving Black customers at the counter, [the manager] would make them wait and tended attentively to white people first."

It doesn't matter if it's two minutes or two seconds. It only takes so long to as "can I help you" and answer "no", and then ask "do you plan on buying anything" -"no".. well you gotta go then. I love how people keep chiming keep telling their stories yet it doesn't account for whether that particular starbucks is in a bad area and take loitering more serious or if they've been seen there enough times to be a regular ect..

@Max S.F. it is you who doesn't understand a franchise carries the corporation name and is responsible for the public relations policy of that corporation, not the franchisee interpretation. Since Starbucks CEO said the corporate policy was not followed, the manager was wrong in asking the men to leave and for calling the cops claiming trespass, and thusly fired. Furthermore if restrictive policies are not posted (i.e. restrooms for paid customer use) nor equally applied then that is a violation of federal discrimination laws.

Although it is common practice for business to have signs saying “Restroom for customers only”, which is understandable, if you ask nicely, most employees have no problem giving you the code to the bathroom. to cover their asses from litigation. in todays America, logic and truth isn't relevant. all that is relevant is not getting your name dragged through the online internet mob that can ruin a business or career in seconds. Look at facebook and what's happening. that's a big issue but look how it exploded and has taken tons of their value away. look at bill cosby, whose accuser even admitted recently it was partially a fabrication to get a paycheck for her kids and he's never been convicted of a single crime but his reputation is forever destroyed for 99% of people on earth. Starbucks knows they are right but takes the blame so no one can say they are racist.

Have any of these people read or heard that the CEO himself said that "THIS IS NOT STARBUCKS POLICY"!?!? The manager was WRONG and was FIRED the next day. The CEO of Starbucks is SHUTTING DOWN ALL Starbucks on the 26th of May to retrain the employees on how to deal with such situations CORRECTLY. So in other words, if you're not the CEO of that company, stop going around crying trespassing and loitering, because the CEO of Starbucks know himself that that manager was and is WRONG. So you want the officers to apologize for doing their job? Let me shed some much needed light on your stupidity. They don't choose what they get called for, much like the military when you got called you went. Also, there was a long pause in between their arrival and them getting cuffed. Their only job at that point is keeping the peace and serving the public. If the store manager says they are loitering and asked them to leave and they didn't, it's the officers job to do it. I'm sure they asked them to leave to avoid more paperwork lol

It’s horrible that law enforcement always assume that we blacks will cause some issue. While sitting in my garage in my home that I built in a waterfront community a officer approached me. At the time I was smoking and reading a book, his stance was slightly tilted to make him a smaller target and his hand was on his gun. Now I know that stance very well since I served 23 years in the military and was caught off guard to see an officer standing right in front of me. Normally my situational awareness is slightly higher but I was relaxing in my home. The officer inquired about a man that was setting on the curb a few houses down from mine and I didn’t notice him since my chair was at the midway point in my garage. Once I began to answer the officer he literally relaxed his hand was removed from his firearm and he let out a breath. Most people wouldn’t notice those slight body movements that we are trained to interpret, but for anyone actually paying attention you can learn a lot from body movements themselves. When the officer heard my tone he visibly relaxed and we continued the conversation about the young man. Initially I didn’t recognize him but when he said he had worked on my house, that jogged my memory of him looking way different. By this time the man is in the patrol car and he appears off, his pupils are dilated and his speech is slurred and he is showing signs of impairment. I asked him how was his wife who I had met previously when he had worked for me and his response was chilling. He said his wife was in heaven and just kept repeating that. I informed the officer that the couple were in their early twenties and the individual was obviously under some kind of drug. The officer asked me if I were willing to vouch for him and allow him to stay with my family because he was homeless. I had to decline because something wasn’t right. Later on my neighbor let me know that they had picked up a murder suspect in our neighborhood that same day. Overall the cop initially saw me as a threat but after speaking with me realized that I wasn’t a threat to him, but the young white male was taken in and found out to be a suspect in his wife’s murder. And me the black veteran who smokes in her garage just another law abiding citizen. My point with this story is that we blacks routinely are initially seen as a threat until proven otherwise and that makes it dangerous because of our darker skin. I pray the day comes when I can be judged on my character and not on my race. It really is dangerous right now if you have to have any dealings with people that may be scared because of the difference in race. The differences in the way law enforcement approaches a black person is with obvious fear and results are seen often with unarmed people getting murdered. It doesn’t matter what their history is at the time because the officers aren’t aware of that at the time. I hope that we as a society will change and come together with more understanding and less hate.

There’s plenty being left out of this. What a tasteless and biased take on this by Trevor Noah. I normally love him to bits, but this was just not right. After being denied bathroom usage, the two men were spiteful and decided to stay in the Starbucks because they felted offended. They themselves took it as a race issue. It is common knowledge and practice for a business place to only allow bathroom usage for their customers. You can’t have your paying customers sitting around waiting for random non paying people taking up space and using facilities meant to improve their experience. These guys were stubborn scumbags giving a place of business unnecessary hardship. Good riddance. Stop with the false news.

All these people taking the cops' side clearly don't understand the Starbucks environment: 1. Tables are hard to get during busy hours so saving one for a friend is common 2. 45% of people sit and work before they order 3. 40% order first then leave 4. 10% go through the drive thru 5. 5% never order anything 6. People use their restroom just because they're known to be clean 7. Their biggest customer demographic dress bummy (yoga/sweatpants) 8. Starbucks is an extremely liberal company so racism from them is abnormal 9. The world could be on fire and there will still be hipsters and valley girls ordering a white chocolate frappuccino so no, this won't hurt their company in the long run.

Racism for the most part is long over. This whole thing was not about race. If you're loitering at any place, you can get asked to leave. If you refuse to order something or leave, the manager has every right to call police to escort anyone out. This is not about race. And I know because I've been asked to leave myself and my skin ain't black! It is also common sense for a place like Starbucks or really any establishment to expect you to order something or else you literally got no business being there. Starbucks is not a community centre! It's a business!

I’m white, and I was in a starbucks waiting to go to the restroom. There was a police officer also waiting, and the guy in the bathroom was taking FOREVER (a solid hour). So the police officer LEGIT slammed on the door and threatened to break it down. The guy came out (terrified), I went it, said thank you to the officer, than left the Starbucks to go to a black lives matters protest a couple blocks down that I’d rsvp’d to go a week before. I flipped off a lot of officers, and I swear I saw the Starbucks guy there lmfao. A white guy waits in a Starbucks and gets helped by the police. A black guy waits in a Starbucks and gets arrested by the police smh.

You left of huge chunks of info. Did you purchase anything? How long were you there? Were you asked to leave? Were the police called because of you? If the officer asked you to leave would you? See where I'm going with this? The two situations could not be anymore different. Does context not matter to anyone anymore? I hope you appreciate living in a country where you can revel in your privilege and appreciate the help of police, then disrespect them at a black lies matter rally. Class act.

This seems like racism. I'm a very punctual person and often arrive places 20-45 minutes before others. I'll normally be seated waiting for 30 minutes, and I don't order until others come. I've never been asked to leave or told I'm required to order immediately, anywhere. I'm mixed English/Persian. I've loitered reading in Starbuck's for hours many times. I've also gone in to Starbucks, McDonald, etc just to run into the washroom. Never been mistreated or arrested. This was a racist individual.

Joshua she also said she was waiting for friends for 25 minutes whereas these guys waited for 2 minutes for a friend and were harrassed by the manager. Stop focussing on the reading comment when both people you responded to also said they've also waited for friends. If you're waiting alone you're going to find something to do. If you're waiting with someone else you talk to the person you're with period. You're calling it loitering because the men involved were black.

Businesses in major cities tend to be a little more uptight when it comes to non-customers loitering and using the bathroom. I've been refused in several places in Chicago but I never assumed it was because of my race. Maybe I should protest Subway. Those racist bastards made me purchase a soda before I could use their bathroom

I don't mind getting kicked out if I don't buy anything. I understand that part but the one thing I can't tolerate is a double standard. For some reason homeless people are allowed to stay in these places without making purchases. WTF!

bustinasscoach Thats the point. You admit that you sit in starbucks without buying anything and nothing happens to you but with these 2 men there was a problem. Also there were white people who felt bad for these men and admitted they were there without buying anything and no one asked them to leave

As the manager of a store, if your inclination is to call the police on a customer who is basically doing what almost every customer does in your business. My question is, why do you feel the need that the police is the first step that you should take?? This is what happens when you have racial profiling and stereotypes. You assume a black person isn’t supposed to be there and has some ill will.

she asked them to purchase something first, they declined, then she asked them to leave. they didn't then she called the cops, Legally it's not like their much else she could do. almost everything else gets's labeled as assault. the reason why calling the cops is you get someone with the legal power to resolve the issue now arresting them was a bit extreme I would have let them off with a warning. Staying on private property after being asked to leave is trespassing.

saxking101 there's a few other things to consider, as well. Actual customers earned their seat. When approached about buying something or to leave, they refused to do either. That's just asking for trouble. Why would they do that? Do you or anyone else actually go to Starbucks to do nothing? Or are you making that up to fit this event? You wanna hang out somewhere and not be bothered? Go to the library
