Why do people continue to be surprised or think dying on Everest is a tragedy? It should be expected. If you decide to climb Everest, your expectation should be that there's a very good chance you are dying up there.

I climbed Stoney Clouds near Ilkeston.250ft to summit.I make base at 10ft then go.up to the tired zone at 80ft then have a rest and a Mars bar,stroke my dog then peak .

I went to the same school as Peter Boardman (Stockport Grammar School). Our geography room was named after him.

You know it’s really cool that humans have this drive to conquer the impossible - it’s amazing actually. My problem is doing so without regard for anything else. Climbing Everest should be banned until we figure out a way to clean it up. It’s a good analogy for us as a species. We want to do all these amazing things but in the process were destroying our home. It’s beautiful yet sad.

The drive to even attempt something like that amazing. RIP 🙏

All Everest climbers need to check their hubris before climbing to their death.

Experienced climbers, with supplemental oxygen and the most detailed preparation have perished on Everest. It was beyond irresponsible to have tried that without carrying oxygen. Especially knowing they had a reason to want to mitigate all the factors that could lead to them not coming back. They had a child!

It's hard not to become addicted to a lifestyle where your job is your hobby of traveling the world, getting paid for performing your favorite sport, get paid by climbing gear companies whose PR and salesmen are your personal friends and have half the year as " off " days.

Instead of risking your life. Go climb Holyhead mountain in Anglesey, Wales. On a good day you can see the Isle of Man, England, and Ireland. It's only 800 feet, an easy climb with fantastic Iron age, Roman and Celtic history with fantastic views across the Irish sea.

I think two characters in Vertical Limit were inspired by them.

Everest summit becomes a haunted peak, regular human sacrifices needed now. Lots of climbers volunteer for the rituals.

Bought a book with three books in one. Chi Mika ha (whatever) book was best eye opener. They are bound by the extreme conditions and the skill sets needed yet they are pretty separate from each other. How a lot of men were in the 70’s I guess. English too.

There are many dead motivated people on that mountain. I am not that motivated so I guess I will be found down here 😮

Yep, even GPS didn't locate them. My son insisted I take an apple airtag with me after I travelled south to buy a car and go home with it. He followed me from the bottom of the M6 to Aberdeen city, not exactly Everest but when I told him my ambition on my bucket list was to get to Everest base camp, he almost passed out! He would make me carry a dozen airtags in case a few gave out on the trek. My planned trip back in 2015 had to be postponed as I fell ill. I never recovered enough to get back to the people organising my trip, to finalise the details. It was to be fully portered, camp set up at night for me, chef to cook all my food and an experienced professional to accompany me as I walked. I wouldn't be carrying any rucksack other than my personal possessions and the whole trip was going to take me a week or more to get there, stay for 2 maybe 3 nights, then return to the city and fly home on an open air ticket. It was only costing me £2k at that point. The airfare was separate. Now I can't climb a set of stairs without becoming breathless, so Everest base camp will have to be there without me ever visiting. If I did try, I'd be risking other people's lives as well as my own and that's not acceptable in my book for the sake of ambition.

Better have your wills in order. 😢

What's the point of climbing the Everest? If it's heroism or bravery, it's the most rewarding job of all, volunteering at various locations and positions, take groceries from food bank to poor people's homes if they're disabled accommodate their needs, but if the motive is showing off as an accomplishment, then they'd be impressing psychopaths who lack empathy, and if hiker dies, who's going to care?

Plot twist: they're living a happy life in an imaginary habitat on top of the mountain peak with a hidden passage.

Tasker was a great writer on the mountain climbing experiences. I highly recommend his book

To all those in the comments that say they'd never climb mount Everest. Sure, stay on your couch at home, I recommend you try out hiking still tho, easy routes are great for fitness and very beautiful and chances of dying are down to a minimum. Hiking in the mountains is for everyone, certain mountains are just for those who are well prepared and want to actually go there, they don't care about randos on the internet saying they're "nuts" for just doing something they enjoy, even if it is life threatening, they signed up for it, they are adults, they understood, the sherpas do it as their job, yes, they are the true masters of Everest as they have lived near it and climbed it many times and are just physically more equipped and YES they should be acknowledged by EVERY CLIMBER who had sherapas to help them but until Nepal and China ban access to the peak people will still climb it. Hell I bet when Mars has hotels on it people will start Climbing Olympus Mons. So, in conclusion, leave people alone to practice their hobbies and maybe try hiking too if you have mountains near you, check online the easy routes and don't go to high altitudes if you're not used to them!
