I remember a time when they used to sweep the roadway like that after an accident, here in MA. Seems these days they just leave everything right in the roadway, especially in the larger cities. I went through an intersection the other day, and there was side molding from 2 different vehicles, plus piles of yellow and red reflector material dead in the center of the roadway - wasn't there a few hours earlier when I had passed in the opposite direction. Seems nobody cares anymore around here ... :( I always enjoy the ride to the scene as much as watching you work. The lights and siren gets the adrenaline going, as if I were there with you. :) Also great to see you look out for your fellow man like you do. May the Lord keep you all safe.

I believe it is, Ron - no question about it, at least from where I'm sitting. :) Even though I've always dreamed of living somewhere farther South or West, I believe I'm where I'm supposed to be as well. Too many great things have happened leading up to, and since I've moved to where I am now. The Good Lord sure has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. :)

Ron Pratt ... Sadly there is no way to prove how much impact both you and your videos have had, or the # of lives your efforts have saved. I recently spent some time helping a youth with a new learning permit driving in parking lots and less traveled roads. (Seems her parents could not be bothered and she needed the experience and accompanying confidence. Sad but true.) I sent her the link to your channel before our adventure and suggested a few videos in particular (prom night & drinking, this one, etc,) so we could discuss them. She was angry that vehicles would not move over for ALL vehicles with sirens and lights. I explained I was proud of her anger, it indicated she was respectful and that would make her a better and much safer driver. I also suggested she direct that anger into spreading the word with others and using it as a teaching tool. She called herself 'Ron's Ambassador'. I was so proud of her I actually shed a tear or three. In spite of all the time and effort you put into your channel I believe your impact is well beyond anything you might imagine. You are certainly to be admired, and you are.

faye austin You say you shed a tear. So did I when I read this. You have no idea how much this means to me. My wife and I were talking about how this channel has seems to have touched so many people from across the world. I receive comments, such as yours that touch me deeply. I receive messages and phone calls and letters. I have people praying for my safety and the safety of my crew. I have people sending me items that they have made or purchased simply because they think it will help make my job safer, easier, or quicker. People send me personal items, some hand-made, like the poster from Mathew. Just yesterday I received a gift of a hand- made, leather-bound journal from Argentina with a cross and an inscription on the first page stating "May God bless you!! Ron Pratt". I was and still am humbled, grateful, bewildered.....that people take the time to think of me in such ways. It is overwhelming and hard to believe at times. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. May God bless and protect you and the young lady that you were helping.

Ron, growing up my Dad owner a wrecker service and used parts. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to take over. Like you with Ethan, I rode along and listened to his every guidance. In 86 we got out first rollback. He learned (after many no keys accident) to carry a cheap bottle of liquid dish soap. You simply pour some down the bed where the tires would slide and it's better than the sliders. He knew the importance of clearing the road quickly. Only takes about 30 seconds, at most, to lay a bead. It also makes unloading so much easier brother!!! Great channel. Keep up the good work!!!

I did some towing up here in Iowa a few years back, one of the best tricks I learned was spraying water on the bed during the winter. It’d ice up quick in the cold temps, and made accident scenes a lot easier to handle. Just had to remember that the rollback bed was coated in ice, then all was well! Probably not the best solution, but in a pinch it worked well. Sure wasn’t easy if you needed to climb up on the bed, but it sure did impress the local police.

Ron Pratt ... As shown via your videos, your job can be both stressful and dangerous. Humor can be a great stress-reliever. I recall the Sprite can on the top of a vehicle that had flipped. And the officer asking you to be careful re the paint job, he wanted to 'buff it out'. Everyone has a healthy respect for one another so the humor is received in the manner it was intended. Of course that respect was earned.

Picture this: You're driving down the freeway and your car suddenly starts shaking. You immediately pull over and your car shuts off. You call for a tow truck. The tow truck arrives and starts loading your vehicle. During this, traffic keeps flying by you at speeds up to if not over 65mph. There's only inches between you and the speeding traffic. All of a sudden a car slams into the back of your car and the tow truck. You didn't have enough time to move out of the way. You are pinned between the speeding car and your vehicle. The tow truck operator is trapped under your vehicle. A passerby stops to help and calls 911. Now you wait. You're bleeding, your seriously hurt, you hear from the person who stopped to help that the tow truck operator is not responding. Fear and anxiety steps in. The police, firemen and paramedics get there. Suddenly you feel like you're going to pass out. You awake in the hospital to find out you have several broken bones, a concussion and possibly worse. You also hear that the tow truck operator didn't make it. The driver of the speeding car escaped with a few bruises and cuts. You start to get angry. If only they had slowed down, moved over and gave the tow truck operator enough room to work safely. Now the tow truck operator has lost his life, you have several months of recovery ahead of you and the family of the tow truck operator has the rest of their lives without their loved one. Again, if only the other car had slowed down and moved over. Think about this story the next time you are traveling down the road and you see an emergency vehicle, tow truck, or construction vehicles on the side of the road. It only takes a few seconds out of your time to slow down and move over. They are people just like you. With families, loved ones, just trying to do their job and come home at the end of their day. Be a responsible, careful, considerate driver! ⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️MOVE OVER⬅️⬅️⬅️⬅️ ⬇️⬇️⬇️SLOW DOWN ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️ PLEASE EVERYONE, SHARE THIS POST!

I have read this many times and it gives me chills to think about ME or my son in law or father.....or any of our employees could be that tow operator under the vehicle. We should always remain focused when driving a vehicle down the road at 70 mph or even 35 mph. What could be more important on social media or a text to put someone in danger. Thanks for sharing this Mike and God bless.

This brought a tear to my eye and reminded me of an incident down here in New Zealand a few years ago where a road construction worker was doing some work on a road. They had a large safety truck with one of the big buffers at the rear, not sure what you call them there, however he was working to the rear of the truck when a car ran into him and the truck. Unfortunately the road worker did not survive and the driver was found to have been texting at the time. The driver was prosecuted and was given a loss of licence and a fine, our penalties here are a joke. The family of the worker have to deal with it daily for the rest of their lives. If you see a warning light, it may only be a vehicles hazard lights, PLEASE slow down and give it room and if not all, leave the phone until you are parked.

As a CDL driver, this is so true. But what makes me angry at police, be it State Police, Troopers, DOT or local; when they determine that a SAFETY INSPECTION is necessary on the side of the interstate. If during a stop, they think it is necessary to do a level II, II or IV inspection in ADDITION to any citations for operation of the CMV; they need to be required to escort the CMV to a location off of the interstate or Highway for the safety of the officer and the CDL driver and the public. It is not imperative to determine if my air brakes bleed down at a certain rate, my tread depths are within limits, my slack adjusters are within specs on the side of the interstate with traffic less than a foot away at 80 mph.

Until I started watching him I had no idea that tow trucks were considered emergency vehicles anywhere so it’s probably just people not realizing that they need to respect tow trucks the same way as they respect police cars or firetrucks or whatever and yes it is absolutely sad to see how many people just don’t get it, if I hear a siren on the road even me on my bicycle I will still pull off of the full road just so that that emergency vehicle and any cars that have to move out of the way have the room that they need and if I come across a place where there’s emergency vehicles by the side of the road, I go around it slowly even on my bicycle because I have heard of people getting really seriously hurt by someone flying down on their bicycle and hitting someone, both the rider and the person that got hit

"They always take the keys" Maybe it's because I'm a locksmith and I know that a heavy key ring can prematurely wear the ignition switch, I always have a second key on a ring by itself in the ignition. In the early 90s there were plastic key blanks available on a snap off card the same size as a credit card so you could cut them and stuff them in your wallet. If they're no longer available I have cut most of the head off a key and drill a new hole so it takes up hardly any room in your pocket. I have a set on a small key ring for house and car that's so light and not bulky I hardly know it's there. One more good one Ron. TY

G6. We owned one at one time. It was the only car I ever owned that I wished someone had stole. Constant trouble with tie rods, wheel alignment problems, struts, etc. Was in a shop more than out. Gave it to a friend when we retired in Philippines. Gave it to them for free.

Thanks for teaching me something. I would have never known a tow vehicle can have sirens as an emergency vehicle. Would have thought it was some crackpot trying to get me on candid camera. Have no laws like that here in WI or MN, will try to be alert if ever in MO.

I understand a few reasons for considering a tow truck as an emergency vehicle. Clearing a wreck fast means less rubberneckers and that means less rubbernecker wrecks adding to the problems. One of the big ones. ************* Good to see and hear you using good sense about running with lights and siren too. ***************** Re: truck locking itself... You should be able to get a keypad for the remote locks (hide it inside a tool box mounted on the truck) Then even if you (or whoever is driving it) lock the key in it, you can open it.

@Ron Pratt, The truck locking itself is to prevent someone from trying to steal your rig. It's pretty common in Tow/Repo trucks made by Ford.

That's pretty cool you guys are able to use lights and emergency horn. There's a two truck driver who lives by my house who drives super recklessly. They don't allow sirens on tow trucks in Chicago. This guy cuts people off, speeds, and I saw him flip some guy off the other day for honking when he blew through a stop sign.

I hate to hear an operator conducts himself in that manner. One of the reasons I began this channel was to work to improve the image of the towing and recovery profession. I pray for his safety and for the safety of those in his path. God bless.

Lots of smaller community operators are decent, but it can be frustrating when your vehicle gets towed to the other side of a large county. Small town cops call local city operators, but local to the county sheriff is any operator in the entire county. I learned that the hard way. The state cops will call anybody in the state. Yes, you crashed north of Atlanta, but we called a south of Atlanta tow truck operator to take your car away. I grew up in Chicago, the only people the average tow truck operators there are nice to is law enforcement. Car crash tows interrupt their main source of income, parking violations tows and booting operations. The suburban operators are usually nicer, but those areas usually do not have as many parking restriction areas as the big city does.

Just a tip on proper siren usage: when driving on open stretches free of intersections and stacked up vehicles, use wail. Then as you approach an intersection or obstacle, switch to yelp along with alternate airhorn blasts or phaser. After you clear the intersection or obstacle, return to wail.

Missouri is different. Here is the explanation and a link for more information if you have an interest. In Missouri, towing and recovery vehicles are considered Emergency Vehicles and can run red/blue lights and sirens when requested to "EXPEDITE" by an authorized agency. Also, we aren't given the reason why we are requested to EXPEDITE. When we are requested to do so, we do so without question. The dispatching agencies have their reasoning. I know it is strange to a lot of people, but it is legal in Missouri. Anyone that is interested in the particulars of the Missouri law, I have a link to a video where I explain this in depth that you are welcome to view. Thanks and God bless. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l5dgpsxj2dy8YWQ.html

Some of us are smart enough to separate them, for that reason and others. Not to mention, it's a good idea not to have all the extra weight on the cylinder, it can cause problems in many vehicles, or wear out the ignition cylinder faster, or screw up the mechanism (like when you see one of those worn out cylinders that doesn't need a key to start, LOL). I always have a loose ignition key that normally stays in the ignition as long as I'm close to the truck or the dog is inside, and then ignition and door (if they're separate) key copies on my personal ring (along with house key), as well as another copy set on my duty keyring, along with handcuff key, kubaton, office/work vehicle/other work keys (I don't always carry my personal keys when I'm working). It's just common sense, to me. Like carrying three or four handcuff keys in different pockets and pouches and loops, common sense. I also usually have a spare set concealed quite well in a hidden compartment somewhere on the exterior of the vehicle, a trick I came up with about twenty years ago after finding myself in a nasty bind. I always make spare copies and build a hidden key spot on anything as soon as I buy it, along with a thorough tuneup.
