Two Contrasting Approaches in Ride Your Wave

Spoilers for the movie Ride Your Wave~
Grieving is a complicated process that we all go through in different ways. Rather than echoing the outmoded idea of the "5 stages of grief," I find that Ride Your Wave embraces a much more nuanced approach. One that uses the power of contrast to explore how we deal with grief, and ultimately, how we should.
As a small aside, Minato is seen constantly making a hand sign throughout the film. This is called the "Shaka," and it's a reflection of Hawaii's "Aloha spirit." It's a message of solidarity. Of saying, "You can get through this. I'm with you."
Hey 5teve7, I'll watch OreImo one day. And I do watch anime sped up sometimes.

I loved the scene where she just ugly cried in front of the tower. She was finally able to let it out after all of that. The movie hit home very hard, it was sad but also one of the most uplifting animations i've seen in a while. We all deal with grievance in different ways. Remember to always love one another and to say hi when you can.

I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Anyone who loves Mugi must be a good person in my book, even if Mugi herself is a strawberry-stealing sociopath (JK). Hearing your voice crack up when talking about your friend was heartbreaking. I'm glad you seem to be grieving in a healthy way.

I loved the scene where she started singing in front of the fountain and then cried in front of the tower when the message played. I loved it because it broke me on the inside 😭. It shows how Minako would always be with her even if he's not physically there 😭

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, this was such a touching video. When your voice started to crack I started to get tears in my eyes. I'm glad you've found a way to preserve their memory and also help with your grief. I think it's so important to understand that grieving is a long process and it isn't so formulaic, it's messy and scary at times but necessary after losing someone you care about. I hope you can keep doing the wonderful things that you do

After delaying it for some time, I finally watched this movie yesterday. I enjoyed it, and it didn't make me cry, but at the very end, when we hear Minato's message, that was waiting a year to be heard, my chest became so stiff that I couldn't cry even if I needed to. Thank you for this beautiful summary, and my sincere condolences for your loss.

Another great video as always.... The toughest part for me when I was watching it was just seeing her try and move and just imagining what she would be feeling to lead her to do all of *that* and its so so heartbreaking...

When i first watched the movie i thought i have witnessed a masterpiece and it is still a masterpiece in my book But then i researched & found out that people really don’t love this movie like at all Very few good reviews of this movie are in youtube Also it has terrible scores at both myanimelist and imdb Which was interesting for me really. I completely emphasized with these characters , the romance and relationships but other people really didn’t I think this movie is a hidden gem ... or maybe I’m a retard guy who likes bad movies ... who knows Awesome analysis btw

Probably because the movie ends open endedly, which may be unsatisfactory to some people but it's still realistic.

The movie is very complex and the message probably goes over most peoples heads, but it’s a movie that covers grief and the journey of moving on from loss. I think a lot of people watch movies for the story and from the story point of view it doesn’t end things neatly, nor is there any overarching development aside from character development. And for a romance, it has very little real romance and definitely does not end in romance. The movie probably has bad reviews because people go into expecting one thing and come out the other not realizing the masterpiece they just watched since they were looking for something else.

That’s interesting. I always recommend this movie to my friends and general, those who are at least a few months out of grieving. I lost a parent as a child and recently lost another last year. It feels like an ongoing battle where some days are good and others feel hopeless. When Ride Your Wave came out it was before I lost my other parent but still actively struggling from my childhood loss. The movie personally, really helped me frame my grief in another way and ultimately just helped me a lot. It feels hard to explain, but one of the things I felt like hinako struggled with is that sometimes it feels like it’s “wrong” to keep moving on and going about life as usual. That’s something I’ve really struggled with in every loss I’ve experienced. In the end though, I try to keep going. To make them proud, and to do the things they didn’t get a chance to. It can be really difficult to come to that acceptance though. I think this helped me see why it’s okay do so.

I cried through the movie and watched this video in search of validating what I felt the movie was about (not that I should've ever lead with that) and found a like minded perspective. When he said 'I've experienced something similar, with an online friend', I teared up. That was such a vulnerable and emotional moment to hear someone go through. I am sorry for your loss. I was strong until you started to sing, then proceeded to break down. 😭😭😢😢 On an honest note though, I think your video and analysis is great. I wish you well and thank you for making this. ❤

your comment regarding the movie is exactly how i thought when i first watched the movie, during the first half i was like "this is so cheesy." but as the movie went on i eventually get the movie, i quite relate to some aspects of the problem, not the depression, but the grief. the movie isn't just about grief but acceptance and god the scene of hinako and youko on the board together, i yelled "she road her wave." and the scene where she broke down in front of the tower really hard.
