Two Days Driving Wales' Best Roads in my BMW E92 325i

So the idea for this trip was to plan a route from Hereford to the South Coast whilst covering some of Wales' (or at least South Wales') best roads. This included a load of roads Chris Harris used to film on, Black Mountain Pass (where Top Gear film regularly) and a load of other stuff in between. The BMW was flawless as usual and even got 41 MPG going back; a pretty decent achievement for a six cylinder petrol.

Had my 2012 e92 325i manual for about 7 years. Done around 50k miles on it and its now in 96k. Love the car. I've tried to look after it well, oil every year instead of 2 years like the official servicing states, etc. I'm biased, but it's a gorgeous looking car, especially facelift LCI form. It's been pretty reliable to be fair. I've had a couple of issues over the years, mainly common ones, although so far not the injectors (think being a later car, it's got the newer revision of injector)... touch wood. I did have the crankcase ventilation valve go which needed the entire valve cover replaced (there are methods to replace just the valve, but my garage didn't want to risk messing around with that). That was ~£800... If you want to run one of these cars my best advice would be pretty simple, put away some money each month into an account and keep a float of a few thousand pound. That way you don't worry about stuff breaking as much and can relax a bit. Got to be realistic, even newest ones like mine are ~10 years old and stuff will fail. If you dont already, turn a spanner where you can. You might find you enjoy yourself and get satisfaction from repairing stuff yourself, learn more about your car. Obviously, you can save a heap of money over the years instead of taking it in for every job. Makes ownership a bit cheaper. Finally, get ISTA so you can do jobs on the car yourself. It's not expensive, there's heaps of resources online to help. 👍

Still satisfied with the performance? Have any of the issues kept you stranded at the side of the road? I am thinking of purchasing one in manual form.

@Thando Mthembu sorry mate just seen this comment. Performance wise its nothing crazy. Its plenty adequate for day to day road going. Its kind of a good amount of power, you can thrash the nuts off it without getting into stupidly quick speeds and losing your license. It does lack some lower end torque if I'm honest, and as many have said over the years, you do need to keep the revs high to get the most out of the engine. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. I was originally gonna get a 325d auto but i drove the 325i manual and just fell in love with it. Mine is an SE not a Msport. Not as good around corners but plus side is it handles the shitty roads around me far better. I loved the look of the 19inch wheels but i went with the SEs 17inch wheels as Id heard many people cracking the 19s. Plus tyres are a bit cheaper in 17 inch form. Personally i haven't had any issues that left me stranded per say. I did just have a rear spring fail but I was at home on the drive and could rig it sufficiently to get to a garage around the corner. I will say its worth finding a decent bmw independent as they can help sort any issues and know the cars. Good luck in whatever car you go for!

I’m thinking about doing a road trip when I get a 325i Lci, how was the fuel economy?

Generally get about 32mpg with a mixture of motorway and b-roads. Goes down when you're on it but equals out when just cruising.

I've seen a e92 325i for £5k which only has 68k miles on it, had 1 owner, and no advisories on recent MOT. You reckon that's a good deal on one of these?

I’ve used 1L of oil in 20k miles, excluding servicing. Maintenance is key to avoiding excessive oil consumption.
