For over two decades, the pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS) and its more recently discovered cousin, Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS), have been perplexing doctors and researchers. In this video, Dr. Miroslav Kovacevic, one of the world's leading experts on PANDAS and PANS, provides an update on what's he's learned from working with over 591 PANDAS/PANS affected children.
PANDAS is short for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. A child may be diagnosed with PANDAS when: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tic disorder, or both suddenly appear following a streptococcal (strep) infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever.
PANDAS Network is the leading national nonprofit organization for PANDAS/PANS/AE, and we’re dedicated to providing resources and support to families like yours who are living with this disorder

Do you think covid could trigger pandas/pans? My son had severe ocd, bed wetting and urinating self during the day. Abnormally stubborn. Sleep disturbance. We started oregano oil for fungal treatment, marijuana for anxiety/ocd.

Although Pans/Pandas is suppose to be covered in Illinois by insurance by our previous Governor this physician charges five hundred and fifty dollars to initial visit I explained this disorder was covered in Illinois I was informed that the fee stand if Dr K is to be seen. I just think it is horrible what about family who needs their child to be seen but doesn’t have finically means, there isn’t any funding’s for this disorder. What happens person are placed on psychiatric meds and Pans/ Pandas not diagnosed. Physician who are aware of this disorder are charging extra funds to be seen from Illinois, Maryland, Georgia and other states. Just an opinion.

I am sorry to hear that your family has been impacted by this disorder. I would like to clarify for you. Illinois does have legislation that requires coverage and Dr Kovacevic was pivotal in getting the bill passed for his patients in Illinois as well as other states. The fee does need to be paid before the patient is seen, but they provide the proper paperwork and coding for families to submit to insurance for reimbursement. This is not because Dr K's office does not want to take insurance up front. This is due to how insurance companies regulate the medical field and what they are bound to with their patients. Dr K is able to see more children and take the time he needs with his patients by this approach of paying and then reimbursement. His office is extremely helpful with insurance and Dr K does peer to peer reviews when insurance companies request in order to help the chances of a claim approval. Unfortunately, insurance companies are still denying coverage in states that have legislation passed. This is a problem and something that will take a united front from many different professional organizations to create change. It is not fair. However, having 2 kids treated by Dr K and in full remission, I have to say that his expertise in what he has done for all of our children must be recognized. Dr K created the JCAP guidelines of medical treatment and is continuously volunteering his time training others, traveling to advocate for families and dedicating his life to improving the diagnosis and treatment for all children. His cost is very low compared to the quality he provides and all of the work and travel he does to create change on his own time and own dollar. With all of that said, I understand the situation you are in. It is painful and something must happen to create change so that doctors like Dr K don't have to take these approaches to help our children. Please email me stacie@pandasnetwork.org. I do have some possible financial resources I can help you with.

It’s the same everywhere dear. It’s because these physicians who work with these “rare” illnesses tend to use new methods that are quietly shunned by the medical establishment. That means they end up no longer taking insurance due to harassment from the insurance industry. Their malpractice insurance is much higher because they generally work with supplements and “new” methods. I have been in this a long time, and seen quite a few doctors. Any that took insurance at one time eventually stopped. One doctor told me that they were afraid to treat our lyme (positive igenix test) due to backlash from local physicians. It is a much more complex issue than you realize, and doctors that work with these kids successfully actually fight a battle behind the scenes just to keep the doors open.

They absolutely do! Instead they treat them as defiant and blame the parents and child for not trying hard enough, and then possibly call cps on them.

May I ask, why does the child get their tonsils removed? Can the treatment be antibiotics only or does it have to be IVIG then Antibiotics? Has there been a case study that only used antibiotics to treat then had lasting positive results?
@AnneGoggansQHHT

It varies depending on several factors. Infections, toxins, genetics, the biome, nervous system. So many variables.

@@AnneGoggansQHHT okay. Antibiotics didn’t work so we’re getting g his tonsils removed Aug 2. If that doesn’t work who’s the best physician to help with IVIG?

PANDAS survivor here! I personally did not get IVIG, and only used antibiotics and supplements. For me personally, antibiotics did not do much since I am very sensitive to some medication. About three years later and I’m doing much better, some symptoms persist daily (sensory issues, anxiety etc) but I am wayy better and have not had to do another round of antibiotics in years
