I've seen bowling documentaries before... there aren't many!... and this was such fun and had a joyful approach to it. I thought it was captivating. The underlying story of the non-conformist breaking out ahead is always a great story, no matter the subject. And Jason is such a joyful competitor, you root for him even though you already know the ending!

This will be A bit long I'll try to shorten it as much as possible. I've never shared this with anyone. Your documentary really hit home for me. As I was little my Dad was working at the Bowlium in Montclair Calif. He was great bowler himself. He got me interested in bowling, so I started when I was 8 or so. I have Cerebral Palsey and I couldn't really walk on my own till I was 7. Being too cumbersome I had to walk to the foul line and be stationary before starting my swing. The comments and ridicule almost had Mee to quit. Fast forward.... I had practiced and practiced thousands of games. I loved the sport. Approx 100 games a week just to keep my muscle memory up plus tournaments on weekends. I won my first tournament when I was 12 (Dad was there and so proud.) my thumb was bleeding allover the place too. I had aspirations of the heavy hitters on TV now. Then I bowled I bowled I bowled. I then had shelves of trophies. I still have the league sheet of the day I was averaging higher than dad was. (Dad was so proud). So I bowled. I bowled. I went to Havasu to bowl the Pro Am during the tour stop there. I was paired up with Danny Wiseman. Never got any real encouragement from anyone at home. They thought it was too far fetched for me to really make it. I felt it. I knew I could though. Danny Wiseman, and Norm Duke and their whole crew acted as if I'd known them forever. Inviting me to dinner. Taking me to Hussongs after and making me feel welcome. I did. All the while pushing me to give it a go with all the encouragement in the world From Danny giving me one of his bowling balls to Norm explaining stuff and telling me I could, was a great step for me. I was at the point I was averaging 210 plus. Ha ha to all. Still standing at the foul line and starting my push away from there. At that time life got really hectic and busy. It took away from the time I needed to devote to bowling. And my game suffered. I almost made it. Alot of things happened between those times. I'm 56 now and it's all but a memory now. But I can tell you there's no better people on the tour than Danny and Norm.Never met Jason. I hear he's as nice as they come. The opposition to my style was huge, and my style was not well taken at first. Belmonte's story parallels my life in so many ways. I hope he continues his rein. Your documentary was great. If you made it this far, Thanks for reading. Still have that purple Nitro from Danny. Priceless to me.

I broke my wrist/arm in a car crash in my 3rd year of bowling. Averaged 150 then after i came back my wrist was just too stiff. Since bowling two handed my average has gone up to 170 and i have a much better time

I’ve been working on it and honestly I may go that route as I age due to arthritis and my thumb is short and stubby lol. Makes fitment an absolute nightmare. I can see myself two handing exclusively in the next few years.

@@nightmare87-128 made the switch 2 1/2 years ago. Never looked back. It’s awesome man! I’m 45. My league partner is 72 and two hander as well.

Same scenario, completely destroyed my right wrist and after bowling my entire life thumbless, I decided to try two handed. It felt more natural and I was able to actually hold the ball and bowl with my very limited Range of Motion. Changed my game and the only reason I still play.

@@unclerhombusi could kinda agree with this. my “problem” with his argument is it kinda feels like he’s degrading two handers bowlers, now i know he’s probably not ofc but from what he stated it could sound like that. i agree one handers have to work harder, but i’ve personally met people where they can’t bowl one handed. i don’t think they should be put down in such a way to where they feel they can’t bowl just because it’s not “traditional”. at the end of the day we all have to knock down the same pins, all strikes look the same on the score board.

Thank you this is a great statement. You speak out of my heart. I bowl 40+ years now and the game constantly evolves. Thats exactly how it should be. At the end of the day the better (time to time also luckier) bowler is winning the championship. Unfortunatly some times very bad breaks stand in the way. But that makes it even more interesting. I wish everyone reading my comment some lucky breaks at best time. Good luck and peace everywhere

Thumb bowling is leaving bowling. Your mentions only exist because that is how they trained growing up. But now most people are learning how to bowl with no thumb as either one or two handed. So as they get older and become the new PBA that is all we are going to see for the most part and the dinosaurs will retire and fall off our radar. People unwilling to adapt and change to better ways are never going to achieve the same as those willing to change.

We still have to see 50, 60 and 70 years old two handed bowlers doin it everyweek in their leagues. And well ... Belmonte is arguably the best bowler ever, and he is two handed but still can be beaten by one handed bowlers from time to time. Thats the nature of the sports and i highly doubt one handed bowling will go away 100% ...

Sorry to burst your bubble but what you say isn’t exactly seen by rank and file pba memberd. Purses for PBA tournaments are less now adjusted for inflation than they were in the 1980s and PGA tournament purses have doubled since Tiger Woods started his run winning majors in 1997. Tell us more about all that money flowing in though. I can think of a few hundred guys who’d love to see where it winds up

Im not sure about your little world but in mine where our lanes were once empty and unused outside of league times we have now seen a ramp up of casual bowlers both old and young and the talk of the lanes is pro bowlers with Belmo being the predominant mention. So maybe in your one dimensional view the pro purses have gone unchanged when adjusted for inflation, my global view of the sport has seen my purse grow despite inflation.
