People often times forget how things were done a century ago. These animals were used for logging timber and carting material. With the power of 15 men each horse its no surprise they could move that semi. Beautiful task done by an amazing animal!

Here in Sweden horses were used for everything back in the day. Even for shifting railroad freight wagons. What people tend to forget they also pulled most of the infrastructure for powerlines.

@@prehistoriccreature1800 Because we have existing records of how much some breeds have actually pulled, how they were worked (two-in hand, four-in hand, solo ect) and then that would be calculated into rough human power.

That is so special. My Grandfather told and retold about the time a semi (this year's and years ago) got stuck in the mud near Eastlake and Lawler Minnesota. It was the same thing. The driver went looking for help but at that time nobody had a tractor. Grandpa said I have a team of horses that that can really pull. The driver said no way they could pull him out. Grandpa had made an evener out of an oak 2X6. They snapped that so they hooked them direct to the frame. They started to pull and their bellies we're almost on the ground. The driver said to stop that it was going to work when the horses felt it give a little. He told the driver they felt it move and he didn't think he could have stopped them it he tried. They got it out. Then it was the same conversation about selling them or traveling around to fairs competing in horse pulls. That was Prince and Queenie. It was a little unique because Prince was a stallion. It is great to see story in real live. Thank you.

Growing up my Uncle had a team of Belgians one Moxy the other Molly. Molly gave birth of Prince. That was many many years ago. But I remember those horses like it was yesterday. They are truly gentle giants.

once had a group of them running circles in the field and heading to a fence , the first one jumped it as the one behind was not slowing down. it legit looked around in a "the boss is not gonna like this" as he stood on the other field.

My mom told me about my great-grandfather who would camp out in the woods of Northern WI with his horse team (1920s-40s) so they could log and fell trees. The house he lived in didn't have electricity or plumbing. Neat family/equine history.

I have had to load at this place a few times and you have to get a running start to get up that Icey driveway. I'm almost sad that I made it up because I would have loved to have these beautiful creatures helpful my semi up that hill! I love these guys. I get choked up watching them work so hard for us I love them so much I want to give him a big hug and a few apples!

I guess that's where the term "horsepower" came from, in rating engine power. I know it takes a lot of work maintaining and training a team, and these two horses are amazing creatures.

Susan, James Watt first used the term horsepower to rate the capacity of his steam engines. A horse working hard will develop approximately one horsepower over a day's work although it can develop up to 15 horsepowers over a short time.

An irish person you must not know much about animals. Animals who are bred for specific jobs do indeed love their work. I suppose you would say that border collies don’t love herding or thoroughbred don’t love racing. I’ve worked with draft horses and know what I’m talking about.

My friend had two draft horses and when he needed one ( the bigger one) the other one got jealous and got in between the bigger horse and the owner.They were in competition with each other, plus they love to work.

Yep, my dad used a team of mules to plough and work peoples gardens in rural East Tennessee, In the Appalachian mountains…in the 1960’s and 1970’s. People would have these gardens on the sides of a hill! Tractors would tip over , and people didn’t have or couldn’t afford anything like the little rototillers we use today . My dad would hitch up Leroy and Judge and off he’d go. I loved to go with him and he’d toss me up onto these big mules backs after they were finished ….and I felt like I was on top of the world! I loved being around these mules and they seemed to understand I was a child and were always so gentle around me. I’d have to stand on a step stool to be able to reach their back so I could brush them after they’d worked all day. I can remember sitting astride one of them, laying back with my head on their rump , cloud watching and then just falling asleep while they grazed . Never felt safer or more at ease .

They are powerful My Belgian has jumped out the felid over 5”5” fence 3 ft spread from electric fence line in front. That’s one big oxer. Powerful!!

People should look up how horse power was originally calibrated: as the steady work rate a horse could sustain over a long period eg ploughing a field. A strong horse can deliver much more than 1hp in short bursts. But expect the horses somehow found a bit of vital grip where the truck had virtually none. Once the truck wasn't polishing snow under its tyres in a fixed spot, it could make some contribution itself.

Crushed black walnut shells is best to get you going on an icy surface. These shells are so hard and sharp-edged they grip both the ice and the rubber.

My Dad told me about when he was a kid getting up in the morning giving the horses a bucket of oats and they'd be raring to go, and loved to work. As a long time rider, it saddens me greatly that everyday there are less and less horses in the world. And of those that are left, an ever higher percentage butchered for meat.

If the truck driver couldn't make it up the hill he must have been loaded lite or empty. Of course my rig weights 33900 lbs empty. That's still a lot of weight for the horses to pull.

Yeah it was the "surprise boost" from the tractor that got a 35,000 lb truck up the hill.........2 horses didn't do it.......he would need the whole Budweiser team to pull that thing up an icy hill.... a 2 horse team can pull about 8 to 10,000 lbs. ......get real

1924 British Empire Exhibition a pair of Shire horses exceeded the capacity of a 45 ton rated dynamometer, the actual pull is estimated to have been well in excess of this, 50 tons One of this pair registered a pull of 29 tons and he was in the 1708 to 2100 lb weight class. So essentially, if he could get a grip with suitable shoes, Vulcan could have done this on his own.

If these horses can pull a 30 ton truck and trailer up a 5 degree slope on an icy road, imagine them pulling a 350 ton locomotive or jumbo jet over a perfectly level surface a few dozen feet. Their main obsticle would be traction on an airport tarmac or safe footing near the tracks.
