A little about me - I just moved to Tasmania, Australia to finish my masters in Marine & Antarctic science. I did the best I could last year virtually and am so happy to finally be allowed into Australia. My degree is a super niche degree and here has such great opportunities, that it was worth me moving across the world for! Join me on my journey.

You are spot on that Aussies tend to just do things on a whim, without planning haha. I’ve also found that since COVID, a lot of people have just got too used to staying in, and are struggling to get their social life back to what it was. Maybe try a regular trivia night at a local pub. That way you get a good social night out with friends with food, drinks and a bit of fun, but it is also a planned thing you can do each week. Keep your spirits up and make sure you cram in some extra fun when you have quiet periods at uni!

Hobart or Tassie in general was the worst possible move for us a few years ago. We moved to the CBD in 2018 and then purchased a home in Battery Point, Hobart in 2019 but have since returned home to NSW. The social isolation is real, unless you already have family and friends there - it's difficult to make and keep friends. I was fortunate that I worked full-time and had work colleagues as friends, however, we no longer keep in contact since I've returned to NSW. I'm sure you'll be fine though, I had other co-workers who moved from the UK and absolutely loved it!

MD when you move to Tasmania you become financially poorer. the mainland property prices increase while the prices in Tasmania move every 20 years so if you invest the same amount in both cities Sydney and Hobart over 10 years your Sydney investment will almost triple while Tasmania will stagnate and possibly go backward with negative growth. after 20 years you would be lucky to recover your investment and the landtax is a scam there.

We were down in Hobart visiting family the other week staying in a hotel, and wandering past a coffee shop I thought "I wonder if Ashleigh is hiding in there?" 😆 Anyway yeah you're right that we can do social things at the last minute. I think that's just part of our generally chilled culture. We might decide to call a couple of friends and ask if they want to go for a meal at the pub tonight. It's no big deal to us if they aren't available - it's just an idea which sometimes works out and sometimes not. But we can certainly plan ahead too.

Things are last minute because of the weather, even though the weather doesn’t really stop us doing things. I get worse in winter. Saw a pademelon at Cascade brewery on Friday i think it lives there if that gives you an excuse to go. The female factory is pretty good as well for a bit of history.

I'm born and bred Tasmanian and yes, you're right in saying that it's not that great. If you have a lot of money and don't need to work, then it's a fantastic place to live, if you like the idea of living on an isolated island with a lot of nature and not much else. But if you're an average Joe - especially if you're young - then it's probably not a very good option. There's a reason why most young people here flee to the mainland at the first opportunity they can get.

Speaking as a Tasmanian, who has left Tasmania and seen a fair chunk of Australia now. Tasmania is not exactly a place a night life or a fast paced life; compared to the mainland its a whole different way of life... Hobart use to be the cheapest place is Aus for a night out, unfortunately a lot of places closed when covid hit.. Go check out Twisted Lime in the city if you like your games (note, I have not been there myself in a few years, but the owner is a great bloke)... unfortunately as I mentioned above, alot of the awesome places have now closed [Flamingos for example]... if you have not done so already tell a hobart native that "Boags is the better beer" and watch the fun happen. :D

Give Tassie the opportunity, and go for the adventure down south arm (some good surf spots and amazing beaches); if you can get a car; go check out the southern lights... or catch the Redline bus to Launnie (Launceston) and see the cataract george... in all of Australia, Tas is still to this day one of my personal favorites place in Australia and that not just because it's home :) I hope you enjoy your time throughout your masters in Tas, but for the true blue Aussie experience you might be better coming for an adventure to Melbourne or Sydney (make sure to catch a ferry to get some awesome photos of the opera house)... feel free to hit me up if you would like some further in depth recommendations for places to have an adventure 😊

@@coffeeenut by the way my tourist tip is that Calverts Beach is an ideal place to see the Aurora. They forecast a few days ahead, if the forecast is Kp=6 or higher and dry weather you should definitely check it out! The whole south arm is a really great place to explore on a day trip. Friendly people and empty beaches.

I've lived in Europe for a year, Melbourne as a police officer for a short period of time, and Sydney when I was much younger. Having lived in Hobart for many years I can honestly say I've never been more miserable and depressed in my entire life. I've been hospitalized five times for mental health, even working in the police and seeing the most horrific things in Melbourne I was never this badly depressed. I'm not sorry for sounding so bitter, it's a fact that Tasmania does this to a lot of people. There's 0 culture down here, the weather is disgusting and only good for maybe two months of the year, there's nothing to do unless you like hiking and bushwalking, there are bogans everywhere. I'm itching to sell my real estate and get the hell out of here, forever. I wish you the very best.

I worked in Tasmania and I have to say it was the worst time for me, most if not all are bogans, and what's worse bogan mentality working for local government. I was there for 7 years and couldn't wait to leave. I wish I could say nice things but I can't find the experience to justify any better comments. There is no growth of industry, and overpriced goods and services are not the best. Everyone seems related to each other. Salamanca is the tourist trap, herd them in and fleece them. how can they justify $15 for a sausage in a roll at the market and the casino is something from the stoneages. It was the first in Australia and it shows it's age. the prices are exorbitant and the quality of the food is terrible very poor.

Ashleigh, Tasmania is not a representation of Australia at all, and by no stretch of the imagination can it be. once you've graduated move to any mainland city and you won't look back. Tasmania has the highest ratio of government workers to the population I think it's about 4 government workers per person. living there. employed in the private sector. Tasmania is the recipient of GST refunds. with the GST hand out it would go bankrupt. In every election, the only way to win in that state is to promise them more gst handouts. it's like the biggest welfare state unemployed. It's a sad and far cry from what it was 200 years ago innovation world-leading inventions than the last 100 years they mastered the unemployed handouts. Just look at Glenorchy council the most corrupt council been fired by the state government and is still corrupt.

Okay Ashleigh...yep very very hard in Tas . I spent 5 years studying Launceston but I could return to Melbourne between semesters. Really hard without family. I walked and explored the North East and made a great friends local..Hobart another 5 years working but traveling around. .Atleast you have the internet and mobile phone now. I had NOTHING but public phone boxes as a student. SO my humble advice...to start.. 'HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXIE & TASMANIA'...GO DOWN THE VARIOUS MOTOR AND SAILING CLUBS AND GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE START SAILING, JOIN A CREW FOR RACES AND EXPLORE THE INLETS AND COAST. FIND A BOAT TO HELP WORK ON AND SPEND TIME OF THE WATER. Find some time and get to King Island great people. Get to Flinders Island but different pace than King. One more tip...get on to listening to live stream 3PBS 106.7 (Melbourne community volunteer radio) live stream or 3RRR. It will get you out of the local mind set temporarily. GREAT MUSIC SCENE in Melbourne. When I lived in Tas, only local repetitive music and no Triple J back then either. Don't listen to commercial stations and listen to music from all over the planet. 3PBS 106.7, look them up. You won't feel so isolated. Get news from home. Tasmanian news very repetitive and inwards. GOOD LUCK.
