There are so many different brands on taobao with a wide range of quality that I feel slightly irritated that she said that taobao brands were known for shoddy work. While a $50 dress is likely not as great as a $200-300 dress, the quality can still be okay. That said, sorry to hear that the dresses didn’t work out for you. Hopefully you’ll be able to find out whether that Sanrio dress was a replica or not soon

Nonetheless one thing I found that is a common theme of 90% of taobao pieces is the lack of structure. Taobao pieces tend to use softer fabric, and those that use harder fabrics, the silhouette is off. There is something about taobao pieces that just makes it bulky, especially at the seam between the waist line and where the dress starts to fluff up. Not sure why that is. I have bought a fair amount of taobao brands, cheap and expensive and this is just one weird thing I've noticed.

They also tend to overdo with their designs because a lot of Chinese lolitas dislike higher prices. So a lot of taobao brands have to add extra laces/decorative elements to justify the price tag to its customers, leading to over designing.

To be honest, dresses from cheap Japanese brands like Bodyline sometimes feel better constructed than even “expensive” TaoBao dresses. Some of the sewing, the material choice and finishing on details. This one is on the more higher end, but it doesn’t feel well finished compared to how this design could look like.

I had seen it but apparently they did new colors recently and that is when I got interested in it. And I know why it is so popular! So cheap and comfy. Perfect!

You could always pin the flaps of the skirt on the roccoco dress to the waist!
