In this episode, Justin and I hit the road with his dog Gunnar. We hunt some public land in Itasca Minnesota for grouse and woodcock. We end up getting a few limits and wearing ourselves tired. The catch and cook was a buffet of all sorts of wild game, from antelope burgers, to crappie fillets, and whitetail deer backstrap, and of course our lovely woodcock. after two nights truck camping i was pretty bummed to come home to 9" of snow...

This has been the most interesting and favourite one so far.. so kind of new to the channel and have just started watching older shows randomly.. seeing Mav in an environment where he isn't totally in his element was very inspiring and uplifting to watch. Yep, I loved this video. Being a Southern boy, I have never hunted grouse or woodcock, but I have always wanted to. I have always soaked my ducks overnight in saltwater, in the fridge. Rinse them really good, then marinate them for several hours in my own secret marinating sauce. Then I wrap them in bacon and grill. Some of our ducks are really gamey by the time that they get this far south, and this seems to take care of the gamey flavor. It might work well for woodcock, as well. We would usually cook big old "cathead biscuits," gravy, and scramble a big pile of eggs to go with them. Again, loved the video. Hope to see more of this type of video in the future!

Very different from hunting in India with my Dad. Stealth and silence was the rule. Mostly early dawn and late evenings. Back in the 70's and 80's. Partridge, quail, grouse, geese, hare. Lovely memories. Just a Hornet Point 22 and a double-barrel 12 bore Purdy. Great times. For the wood cock : A few pepper corns in a little oil in your cast iron skillet, finely chopped ginger and garlic. Light sautè, then chopped onions, brown just a bit, drop in your dressed and cut bird. Salt and cayenne chilli. Fry a bit. We loved eating that with our wheat chapatis, but you could accompany it with a nice warmed bun.

I've been hunting over 40 years... I salute your honesty on taste of different food. I can't tell you how many times I ate stuff that other people cooked (wrong) or just plain yucky LOL. And I had to eat it with a straight face and couldn't tell them that it tasted like poop.... Love your honesty!!! I respect that

Make chicken noodle soup with the woodcock. That is one of my favorite ways to prepare it. Woodcock, carrots, onion, celery, bay leaf, couple of chicken bouillon cubes, black pepper and whatever other seasonings you want to add to your chicken noodle soup.

Soak it in buttermilk over night, wash, dredge it in floor, and dip in egg and panko bread crumbs, then deep fry it. Season to your pleasing and that should make them taste good.

I’m in the SE US I’ve been pheasant & quail hunting w dogs, dove w/o, & turkey hunting. And of course white tail, Absolutely love it! The more you go the more you’ll learn & the greater you’re comfort level will increase. You had a great time w the guys & the dogs and that’s the important part (aside from the meat)

Nice video! You were in with some knowledgeable hunters and good dogs. I've tried it in Northern WI but without a dog, it's mostly just a walk in the woods (which still beats sitting at home).

We have a cabin in Cook, not too far from where you were. I was just up there 2 weeks ago grouse hunting. Very nice area and a great place for hunting.

I really enjoyed the bird hunting, would love to learn some more about chucker pheasant hunting as I hope to go do it someday! I thought for what the conditions were you did a great video and the length of the video was awesome too! Where I live the most challenging Upland hunts are definitely Chuckar, and Ruffed/Blue Grouse. Awesome to see an Upland Game hunt video though. I really enjoyed this. 💯💯

The last time my hunter was back in the early 70s with my uncles it was a very fun time when I was a young boy lot of excitement I haven't done it since I was a young teenager that was still in the late 70s brought back a lot of good memories m.A V

Woodcock recipe: marinade the woodcock in soy sause and italian sause over night. Place meat on a plank of applewood and place in oven. 350 for 1 hour. Remove plank with woodcock on it. Throw woodcock in trash and eat the plank.

I make patee out of our woodcock and my kids devour it! FYI ... those aren't jack rabbits, they are summer coat snowshoe rabbit. Their fur changes color from summer to winter.

I live in mn to and I also have a friend named Justin and his dogs name is gunner and another dog named Newman, but both gunners look super similar to and I was just waiting for the camera to point at Justin to see if it was my buddy to 😂
