the tobacco is so different, from bowl to bowl (because of the cut) that this will make it seem sometimes that there are differences in the three brands! an excellent look at these blends and a brilliant way to answer the question, once and for all! Many thanks to you Mark

Highly informative! Your efforts are appreciated. Over here, in the States, they do the same thing with many products. For example, the same manufacturer will build identical washing machines but put different brand names on them. Often with a large price difference.

Hi Mark, I finally had enough time to sit down and watch this video straight through without interruption. My admiration for you cannot be any higher after seeing how comprehensive your experiment was. I love how your mind works! Such powers of analysis! I echo what others have already said, this was a pleasure to watch. The length did not matter. The only way the experiment may have been better would have been if you were blindfolded and someone else handed you one or the other of your test pipes. That would truly have been a blind test. I hope we see more tests like this. Be well, Slim

Your videos always have a gem in them that make me laugh for the rest of the day whenever I think about it. The double smoking not just once but 15 times stopped me cold. When you do something you just don't leave room for any counter arguments. In this case, duplication of this experiment to verify your results comes with danger.

Hello Mark, Very interesting research. Awesome to have pipe smoking, pipe tobacco and "scientific testing" all at once!!I think that people should make more videos of this sort, identifying copies and comparing them. Eric, told me of this recipe a while back. I have a tin of DSK and SD at his place. Looking forward trying the mix! This past week, I tried a very good blend from McClelland, the Yenidje Highlander (from the Grand Oriental series). Great blend. Certainly one of the best I have tried this year (for my taste of course, since it is all subjective). I hope that you still have some nice fall days. It should snow next week here (still far meteo broadcast, so hope the snow do not come so soon!!). Take care my good friend, and Be well! Gilles

Hey Mark, ah...here's the video I've been waiting for, and it was no disappointment....though I certainly wasn't meaning to bother you to come up with another video, I was just curious about your comment regarding HU Nr.5 at the end of the French footage video. You did a tremendous amount of work on this and I think figured out the mystery about these blends. I have suspected for many years that this happens with many blends as well, more often than we imagine. Thanks for your time and effort on this one....hope you're well, and that perhaps you're enjoying a pipe with some other tobaccos now.....lol. Take care and be well my friend, Corey
@bremenpipesmoker65717 жыл бұрын
Hello Corey, my friend! You didn't bother me at all! I always appreciate your very thoughtful and studied approach on those "serious tobacco topics"! Take care! And be well! Mark

I wonder how many other tobaccos are exactly the same...made by the same company but branded differently... This video made me think over tobaccos and pipe smokers too...on how much we are mesmerized in to buy one brand or another just for the brand and how much we are willing to pay for this markting suggestion...that probably is true regarding pipe's brand themselves... Btw...i really appreciate your channel... Greetings from Italy...

I know it’s late but thought I might comment. It might be the case, informally or formally, that Orlik doesn’t want to undercut a distributor, even if it’s sold under a different branding. So that’s why they don’t sell that one in Germany.

Mark, I really enjoyed this video. Do you have several similar questions you are working on? The idea of your double blind test was good. Thanks for smoking so much to do the research for us! I was a bit surprised you didn't use a pair of matching meerschaums.
@bremenpipesmoker65717 жыл бұрын
Hello Vic! Thanks you so much for watching and good words! Yeah...there are several candidates for being "copies" or "twins"...let's see... And...well...there is a simple reason...these Knudsons were brand new, without any ghost and during the test period, I didn't smoke any other tobacco in them...my Meerschaums are all on "every day duty"...LOL Take care! And be well! Mark
@vicdiciccio66377 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, Do you think meerschaums "ghost" a little bit? I've got three meerschaums I bought new, the rest are estates. One is a Peterson Sherlock Holmes squire (bent bulldog), which I've only used for English blends, mostly Nightcap. I think it smells like English, even after cleaning. The other two I have not yet smoked, a Sherlock Holmes Original, and a Baki bent ball. I can't decide which to dedicate to virginia. I'm in an English phase right now. I'm wondering, do you dedicate your meerschaums? And, if so, would you argue that a pipe used for vapers might affect the taste of pure virginias? You've got me thinking I should have a pipe just for Kentucky!! LOL I love planning and debating these decisions. Best, Vic
@bremenpipesmoker65717 жыл бұрын
Hello Vic! ...well...one of the best characteristics of the Meerschaum is, that it has (nearly) no affinity, to ghosts - especially compared to Briars. Perhaps, if you just smoke heavy Latakias for a long period in one pipe, you might have a ghost for some bowls...it should leave then... If you just can't get rid of it...you can use the old "salt-alcohol method"... Fill the bowl with normal salt from the kitchen...then you insert 3 drops (not more) of pure alcohol, let it rest over night....the ghost should be "banned" then... But as I said...best thing is, that you don't have to worry about the ghosts...I smoke all my tobaccos in the moment, I'm craving for them in the pipe, I want to smoke right in that moment... But anyway... a special pipe just for Kentucky is always a good idea! LOL Take care! Be well! Mark

Many thanks for watching...and for very kind words! Well...I guess, it will be hard, to find a copy of the Germains...thats because, this company is so small, that they hardly can satisfy the demand for their own products... At least, I don't know a copy of the RDF... unfortunately! It's not the same or even "similar"...but perhaps, you give the Mac Baren HH old dark fired or the Mc Clelland 2035 dark navy flake a shot? Perhaps at least the same alley... Take care! Hope, you find something good, to chooche on... Be well! Mark

For me it seems that the PH is ODS,except the PH flakes didn’t make the cut due to be a bit dryer and not aesthetically as pure as the ODS flakes which are flawless.👍

Dear Sir, I'm a new sub to your channel, I found this most informative. Thank you. I'm in the UK, our smoking laws are 'interesting' to say the least. But having said that, I enjoy pipe smoking. If I may, could I ask for your expertise. Personally, I like aromatic, but robust tobacco. But I find this nearly impossible to buy here. I'm a scientist by training, but bow to your experience. I would welcome your advice on how to blend proprietary tobaccos to achieve my desired smoke. Any advice is much obliged. Kind Regards, Alan.

Hello Alan! Many thanks for the sub...and most kind words! Yeah...thanks for the hint on that topic...perhaps, I gonna a video about that one day...already planing on a video about mixing your own cigar leaf blend... But...as a first suggestion...have you tried, to mix a hint of extremely overdosed aromatic (let's say 1-5 percent) with some strong matured virginia or perhaps even Kentucky? For e.g. 2g of Bentley's Vanilla with 50g of Peterson's Irish flake...? Could be a start... Take care! And be well! Mark

My guess was that Orlik produces it all, and sells it to HU or PH (or Kohlhase) under contract for the German market. Under that agreement, Orlik cannot sell DSK in Germany, and PH and HU will buy it from Orlik (or their contracted distributor) only. On packing - HU/PH packs at their factories after bulk shipments, and Orlik can pack at the point of production - ensuring tidy packing. Good sleuthing! P.S. Turns out you said similar at the end. :-)

200 gm tin 🇺🇸 is $23, which is less than the equivalent of the ODS.

I bet, since the other companies have "broken" tobacco, that's probably There seconds they sell to companies at a discounted price. I do know that Lanes sells to shops and they rename it.

Took me three days but I finished the video. Very good presentation and analysis. Very unique look having the dark and light tobaccos pressed together. So it is worth buying? It is interesting to see the different ratings on tobaccoreview.com eventho its the same tobacco. Great to see you as always Mark. Take care and stay warm my Bremen pipesmoker!
