"this is black, because (pause) it looks good"... Well I agree with you in 100%. I refuse to be a victim of utility and functionality over the form and shape. You are the one of the most important person in overland society in whole world. In my opinion and many others.

A wonderfully enjoyable video, I've been following your content for about six years now, I do like this type of video that little more than the others, it may be that while you present the products in a professional pitch, you also take the time to explain the unravelling of thought that prompted you to choose, which of course is invaluable information to the less experienced and vital in not making rash purchases that will need to be swapped out later, looking forward to the next part, stay special Andrew.

I'm a jeep guy and absolutely love my jeep gladiator - it has everything I need and then some. However, I've has this crazy idea of "what if I took a gladiator platform and turned it into a van?" I've been stewing over it for about a year now and I think the concept would be so cool... Unfortunately in the states we don't have 70 series LC or 110 Defenders (we sorta do, but it's not the same...) and Wranglers and Tacomas rule, which is fine. But we lack the OEM long wheel base 4x4 van type (78 series, 110) and we have to do our best with what we have. Great video Andrew, thanks for sharing!

absolutely amazing video. Well explained and with some fun it makes it even better to watch. very very interesting is your tire issue. Yes exactly... the 255/85-16 would be the perfect tire size but just MT's are available, here in Germany too. But going for 265 or 235 or what ever, the tire diameter gets smaller. For me a problem due to the already quiet short 5th gear. so I went for the 285/75-16 (BFG AT) even when they are to wide for me too.

Thank you as always Andrew and just a side note to using alloy or steel in the roo bar is that I did find that after long miles of corrugations I started to get cracks in the weld joins in various locations around the dar and this also was apparent on the alloy side steps . Both items needed weld repairs on reaching Alice Springs and consequently I never used alloy again on my return to Perth both items were replaced with steel with no issue since . Kim .

Thoroughly enjoyed the video, well presented and love having no ads 👍 Regarding the oil catch can, the oil vapour is not the problem and if you were to open your intercooler you will find it quite clean (after 150k+ kms), some would say beneficial to lubricating the turbine intake fins. The issue arises were the oil vapour and EGR valve meet at the inlet manifold at the top centre of the engine. The carbon and oil create the sludge and build up. Have a look at turning the valves off electronically immediately and you can leave the catch can off. Cheers 🍻
@radovankovacic9731
@radovankovacic9731 Жыл бұрын
Your 100% correct. Andrew is 100% wrong. Sorry Andrew. Catch can catches oil vapour yes, but this was never a intercooler issue. Its EGR. Exhaust Gas Recycling. Mixing exhaust with oil mist = tar sludge. Your intake will be fithy within 30k kms easily. For the record my NT Pajero with 200k kms, had the front mount intercooler ( which is worse for pooling oil mist) removed for cleaning. It was spotless, no cleaning needed. As for the EGR 😁, lets just say my Paj breaths clean air. Another benefit, your oil will still be golden colour even after 7000kms. So guys, look at your EGR and dont waste money on catch cans. If anything, the mist lubricates your turbo impeller ( as it is introduced before the turbo) and valve stems.

Andrew, I'm one of those 70 series owners who has damage his rear door latch n hinges with the spare. But that is after 12 years on brutal East African roads with a series of heavier mud terrain 31s hanging on the back door of my 27 year old kzj78. Spare is now on the roof rack, but don't like that weight up so high so am custom building a single swing arm tyre carrier that will allow me/my wife to open the small rear door without opening the swing arm, cause this LC is our daily driver! Great video and agree that rear door damage seems pretty rare on these, the toyota old school engineering was very robust!

My car is probably 1/3 the weight of yours. The standard suspension is often criticized - but for my kind of driving I like it a lot. It’s my daily driver that I take off-road every once in a while. - Meaning, I might change the shocks later but keep the standard coils springs. - Why? - Because it might be the best compromise for me.

I like your van. 👌👌 It's good to know that even with your decades of extensive experience building & fitting out offroad vehicles,... err vans, 😁 you still don't get it right. For me, after 4yrs since I fittout my vehicle, I now want to change it to suit my style of 4WD touring better. Changing things on a 4WD, might not seem like a big deal to you, or for a lot of KZfaqrs, where many are sponsored, and/or given these products for free. But for a mere mortal like myself, each & every item fitted to my 4WD, is hard earned, and if it needs to be changed, it seems like a huge waste of money. But even so, it needs to be done to make the improvements. Looking forward to the interior segment. 👍

It has been my dream car I never have regretted buying it. Now I now that in Australia it might be different and I don’t know the particulars but you should look at the Baja Boss AT. All reviews I’ve seen of them are better than the BF KO2s and they are also winter rated. They may not meet all your need but I would love to here your opinion on them. @@labourlawact7826 yes, funny - I’m the same way. We have a VW Atlas (aka Teramont) - 3rd row wagon (aka a SUV in the US). One of the first “mods” I did was get smaller rims and taller, more narrow AT tires. 245/60R16 to 235/75R 17. On my ‘94 Toyota pickup (aka Hilux), went from a 225/75R15 to a 215/85R16. @@madeinjapanoverland1843 Yeah, that's a very good idea. Here in South Africa you're also much better off with a high profile tyre and steel rims, because there's potholes with fish swimming in them. If you hit one it's goodbye tyre and alloy rim.

So glad someone is addressing weight. It’s way too common to build overweight 4wds these days. Weight on a 4WD multiplies every force on every piece of the vehicle, increasing wear, sapping fuel and horsepower and decreasing floatation. Where the average Ute tourer now days takes 4 major structures, cab, tray, canopy, RTT to achieve 3 tasks, driving, storage and sleeping, the troopy or ‘van’ effectively allows this to be achieved in one structure meaning less weight. Was not surprised this came after the dream tourer

I'll explain👌,, a) diesels/petrol engines produce oil vapors in the crankcase . This vapor is ingested into the engine through the PCV system and burnt off via the EGR system. Carbon build up occurs over time clogging the EGR Passage and rendered it ineffective. The Catch Can removes this oil vapor before it gets to the EGR system,, hence eliminating it from being burned and clogging that system. Hope that helps 🙏. Cheers 🍻, G.

Van life with ASPW. 😁 Wanting to own the best 4WD that suits you is a never ending improvement. It's an ongoing series of mini-projects. I am looking at making major changes to my existing setup. This is due to knowing better what suits my needs, and the emergence of new gear. Driving this need for change is to have better ease of usability, improve access, & reduce weight. My current setup at the back of my 80 Series, are double side-by-side drawers w/a chest style fridge on a fridge slide on the top left side. 3 yrs of use have shown some flaws. Even though my 80 Series only have a modest 2" lift, w/o a drop slide, it is difficult to access the entire interior of the fridge w/o using a step stool. And the upper tailgate gets in the way of fully opening the lids. I'm looking to changing this to a double drawer in a stacked configuration, w/an upright fridge on the left sitting on the floor. This should gives us immensely better access to the fridge, & reduced weight by eliminating the need for a slide, & using a lighter upright fridge. Yup, never ending vehicle projects. 😒 Cha-ching 💰💲💰💲

I've been saying for a long time that airing down your tires does not provide significant extra traction on loose surfaces like sand because it makes the contact patch bigger. Rather, it's because the bottom of the tire becomes flat and the car becomes like a tracked vehicle. At higher pressure the tire maintains its curved shape and therefore digs into the sand, so even if you are on flat ground, you are constantly climbing a hill -- the hill underneath each tire that your round tires made.
