That Flyer engine is beautiful. A bit of cleaning and some oil and grease, she'll be awesome.

Will give it some maintenance and see if it runs. It is in nice shape, but missing the boiler front and rear truck.

@@alsvintagetoytrains7042 Probably available. I have a decent collection of prewar Gilbert Flyer and it runs beautifully.

Thanks! They are nice, but will need a lot of work. Looks like I will be rewiring 7 passenger cars and a tender. Plus finding the few parts needed. Looking forward the project.

Hello Al, This is a very interesting set. The "non-electric" box couplers have always been confusing to me because I feel like they really never show up in the catalogs. Yet, you find pre war trains with them out there in the wild fairly often. Also, are these couplers "high" or "low" version pre-war couplers? In the 1938 catalog, the 2600, 2601 and 2602 are paired with the 2265W tender, which I believe has high version of electric box couplers. In the 1937 catalog the 600, 601 and 602 are paired with the 265W tender, which is supposedly latch coupler. I'm not sure if the 265W is high or low version couplers. And you have a hybrid set. I know I'm a bit obsessed with pre war couplers, but no one seems to discuss them. In any case it's a beautiful set, do you typically scope out your purchases in the New England area? Thanks again for your great videos and information! Jim

Jim, my Doyle's Prewar reference describes it very well. So the 600 series cars came with either latch or box couplers in 1936 & 1937. So the box couplers were introduced in 1936 from what I could find. The 238E & 265W tender were offered in 1936 & 1937. So this leads me to believe I have a 1936 or 37 set with an extra coach which were sold separately.

Also, I am not sure when coupler height became a thing and something I need to research. I know the 227 & 228 switchers came out in 1939 which have different coupler heights.
