Agree but it should be balanced. We take pride in this culture, sharing it with foreigners, but let's tell the truth here. There are parents / guardians who are EXPECTING their kids to take care of them upon elderly. They dont save money, they make their kids their retirement fund. Or parents who emotionally abused their kids and expecting them to be strong adults and take care of them. I think we can't keep on being nice to those kinds of people.

When I first heard this song MAPA I was not yet an A'tin and I still didn't know SB19 so no intense emotions despite being a parent. Not until I discovered them and played this Mapa song for so many times I got emotional especially watching them perform this..

You’d be amaze to know that in Josh’s part, singing a wonderful phrase not really knowing his absent dad since he was born…. And Ken’s never seen his parents since he was a kid until he brought them back from where they were migrated. There was no family for him on his journey with the other boys. That’s why he cried when he saw his sister on stage on one of their concert…after he said “I’m the only one without a family here again”.

A reactor gained over 1million views on his reaction video to the song "Mapa" by SB19. The video went viral due to his genuine reaction and emotional response to the song. The reactor had lost his father just two months prior to reacting to the lyric video, and it was his first time reacting to SB19. The video made a lot of people cry, including me. The reactor was even featured in national news for his touching reaction . My experience with almost losing my mom during the pandemic allowed me to relate to the reactor's emotional response. It's a reminder that my parents are getting older, and I should cherish the time i have with them.

The jingle qt the beginning (lataratara) is said to be a jingle filipino mothers would sing to their babies to comfort them and get them to sleep. I have fond memories of being rocked by my mom as she sang this jingle. And I did it to my sons when they were babies

I love that there's no awkwardness between you two. I can't do that with my old man coz he's probably one of the many reasons that I have this awkward feeling to people, you know, like I'm the only boy in 5 siblings, it was always my Mother beside me in every important point in my life; circumcision, school awardings, emotional support, and many more to mention. Yes, it's the deepest song for me as well. Second are Nyebe and Ilaw. Nyebe means snow and the song is about hope (symbolised by snow that will melt away eventually), while Ilaw means light, which is quite self-explanatory. Ilaw also signifies the shout to be heard and to rest once in a while cos our internal light may also fade away if we don't take care of ourselves (physically and mentally).

The chorus hits me most, I remember in 2020 is the last stage of my mom’s Alzheimer’s, and she had pneumonia. We admitted her to the hospital and luckily I was able to stay with her in the room when she was negative in the Covid test, her doctor told me she is very weak and her heart could stop anytime, I watch her lie on the bed, tubes attached to her all I see is her suffering, as the family gave me permission (they discussed it in a group call) to sign papers to not resuscitate her if her heart stop, and so I wait, one night in the hospital I whisper to her to just close her eyes, rest and just go, some parts I said were in that chorus, I told her I’ll be fine(she is a single mom btw) as I still have her siblings and my cousins to look out for me…she stayed almost two weeks before she was good to go home, she passed away at home on her bed that night, peacefully…days later after the funeral I found MAPA on KZfaq which had lot of views, out of curiosity I listened to it and I end up bawling when the chorus came on…still can’t get over it every time I listen to it

I actually avoided listening to this song for few months now because I recently lost my dad and I feel like I can't breath when I listen to this song and realize that he is not here anymore. I just miss him, his voice, his advices, and his hugs. Thank you for reacting to this song. You two should check SB19 performing this song with Ben and Ben because it had a different color and feeling. It made me feel happy and sad at the same time.

Yes, a lot of people don’t have all the monetary means to take care of parents in the Philippines but we give our time to our parents and family members. In most cases, we make sure that somebody is available to watch over them in their old age. For an instance, if our parents need to go for a doctor’s appointment, or someone in the family is confined in the hospital, there is always a family member or even a friend accompanying. A thing which is very rare to see in the US, probably because everybody is busy working for a living. I work in the ED here in US and that’s what I observed.

This song reflects the culture of the Philippines. I love my parents dearly but I'm not a showy person and don't really say anything to them despite their genuine efforts to raise us. However, this song gave me a lot of inspiration in a variety of ways, and I will always cherish it. I've only ever thanked my parents and God for bringing me into this world once, and thats time when I first heard this song. I love how sb19 made this song ❤

It's specially meaningful to us Filipino because a lot of us have to work abroad to earn a living and support the family, parents and adult children alike. Ken's parents work abroad and he lived with his grandparents before he became a member of SB19. Filipinos can really relate to this song. It is a sad reality here that because we don't have enough jobs our people have to work elsewhere. Happy to see you two hugging each other. That's another thing that's rarely seen in western culture. Here in the Philippines, we express our fondness thru touch. Embracing/holding hands/touching people dear to us, not just our family.

Aw this song is such a tear jerker. It very much speaks to the culture too not just their song of their own emotions and experience. That is Filipino families. Many people of other cultures marry into Filipino families because of this love of family. But sadly, some of those born and raised here start to adapt the American culture of not taking care of their parents like our culture expects, they follow American culture 😢 Partly the parents doing though to not instill their culture no matter where you live in the world.

What I love that in Asian culture is the close-knit family dynamic and togetherness. We Asians, though, tend to be not so vocal to what we really feel sometimes, and while we show our feelings through action, I wish sometimes we are able to communicate it a little openly. This is what I like about the West, they are open to saying what they feel---like kids (even as adults) can tell their parents "I love you" anytime. I haven't said I love you to my parents since I was a little girl. I show it, but I most certainly seldom say it except for a few special moments which are very far apart from each other. I wish we could be as vocal as the West in that aspect.
