“His conceit will be the death of him.” Oh, yes. As much as I love the guy, Napoleon was definitely his own worst enemy.

I wish EHTV had mentioned it here. After the news of the French disaster at Baylen and in Portugal, all the anti-French forces in Europe revived. Austria began mobilizing its forces. Napoleon decided to withdraw his best troops from Germany and Central Europe for a campaign in Spain, which he would lead himself. But he needed to secure his position against a possible Austrian attack. In Erfurt, a German town, a meeting was arranged between Napoleon and the Russian Czar Alexander I. Importantly, it was no longer a meeting of winner with the vanquished (as in Tilsit the year before), but negotiations between two equal players. Because of the bad situation in Spain, Napoleon had to accept that now Russia would also defend its interests. After difficult negotiations, the Russian-French alliance was confirmed, Russia accepted the role of mediator between France and Britain, and also undertook to enter the war against Austria on the side of France. Napoleon, in turn, was forced to reduce the astronomical contribution from Prussia and withdraw his troops from this country (except for a few strongholds). Napoleon's rear was secured for a time and he went to Spain. The treaty at Erfurt soon gave up. Napoleon never withdrew his troops from Prussia, and Russia only formally participated in the coming war with Austria.

Sir Arthur Wellesley also known as Duke of Wellington was one of the best British generals. He started his early career in India where he defeated British's biggest nemesis Tipu Sultan. It was Tipu who innovated the Missiles. He innovated Mysorean rockets which was one of the first of its kind. Later British adopted this technique and called it Congreve Rockets. You can see a poster in NASA about Mysore Rockets fired from Tipu's fort.

This Arthur Wellesley after defeating Tipu, Marathas in India went to Spain where he defeated Napoleon's Marshals- Soult, Massena, Marmount, Jourdan. He later defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. He later served as Prime Minister of Britain.(1834).

Napoleon wanted to conquer Spain and impose his brother as king. His ignorance of Spain was fabulous.

The British army arrived to assist the spanish but when they arrived the spainish resistance had just been crushed and they were being chased by an army more than double their size. I think it was absolutely justifiable that they had to retreat.

“That’s a movie I’d like to see.” There aren’t enough movies about the Napoleonic Wars. We need more of them.

Would love to see you react to the history of Russia from the same channel. Its really well done and it explains a lot on why that region was always unstable.

Well, the influence of the Frenchs in Spain was 0. Only 2 years of invasion. Anyway France and Spain have things in common. Like food and buildings. The relationship betwen Frenchs and Spanishs is not the best.

Historian Oleg Sokolov conducted a study that showed that the average height of the French army was about 165 cm. And this despite the fact that not everyone was taken into the army, that is, people below a certain height were not taken, that is, the average growth of the population of France was even lower.

Thanks to Napoleon my country became independent.

Thanks to Napoleon, Spain had its first Constitution. But today we only remember the pillage done by the french marshals. Maybe Napoleon wans't a good guy but he was definitely the good guy of the Napoleonic Wars, considering he was facing the monarchies of Europe and the oppressive old doctrine they were trying to reinstate.

@@EonFafnir When the Portuguese court fled to Brazil, they made the colony the center of the overseas empire, with its capital in Rio de Janeiro. This was the first in a series of events that led to independence in 1822, just as the invasion of Spain led to the independence of several colonies in America.

@@kozmin2 It's not the first time they've talked to me about it. I know there are many South Americans who welcome Napoleon's invasion of the peninsula, because it wore down the old Spanish and Portuguese empires and made it easier for them to become independent. It is not something that bothers me, even being Spanish. Each people must be able to choose their destiny.

@@EonFafnir I think France had the most influence in the Spanish colonies, you can see countries like Chile and Paraguay carrying the colors of the French Revolution on their flags. Brazil was more influenced by the old regimes of Europe, having become a monarchy after independence. Only with the fell of the empire in 1889 we approached French ideals such as Positivism.
