My father was a Freemason, but we never knew it until he died. He never told us. At his funeral, the Masons did a ceremony. Caught us off guard. I asked them what his degree was, but they wouldn’t tell me. They just said it was a higher degree, he was a member for over 70 years. I’ve made several phone calls, but they refuse to tell me. I guess we’ll never know.

This sounds odd to me, and to any other mason. Our Masonic funeral service is open to the public of course and if he was a 70 year mason, then he likely became a mason at a very young age and would have been close to 90 or more when he died. Also, he was likely a Master Mason. If your dad really was a mason, contact the grand lodge in your state during business hours. They will give you the information. It’s not hidden or secret.

Fraternal greetings from Muskogee # 28, Muskogee, OK. I'm a Master Mason and, with the grace of God , soon to be a candidate for the Scottish Rite this weekend. I am grateful to the GAOTU that I joined Masonry, even though it was a bit late in life.The discussion of never mentioning politics in lodge rings especially true in these crazy times, and out lodge is a welcome sanctuary to the lunacy in the world outside, even if only for an hour or so.

Scottish rite help with surgery for my son. He was only two but they covered everything. My cousin had life-saving surgery at six years old because of Scottish rite. the Freemasons paid for my mother surgery when she was two years old and needed surgery on her eye. I do know that the Freemasons participate and helping children. They do good things for the community. Whenever I see Shriners, I tried to give what little change I have. Because I know the proceeds go back to helping children.

As a Mason, 32 SR and Shriner, the basis is that we meet on the level too. That applies across everything. That means, you can be a millionaire and I'm in poverty, but in lodge, we meet as equals. We are brothers and not talking about those things is one more example of meeting on the level

Not talking of something does not respectfully mean you're "meeting on the same level." It also does not equal brotherhood. It typically means avoiding and side stepping uncomfortable conversations. It means you've set in a code of conduct, to set aside things in a politically correct mode of operation. To keep from offending or causing rift or discord. As we see from topics of religion, sexual orientation, politics, racial ignorance, and whole list of other topics. Ignoring it, does not forge bonds of understanding. It tends to lead to more fights, ignorance and inabilities to live in harmony. We have over 150years of slavery being over. Yet, we're still fighting about ignorance and racial hatred, about things none of us alive today are responsible for. Not talking of something, does not dismiss it or make it less of a reality or in some instances even offensive. Additionally, communication and common sense help solve more problems or difference of opinions, than does ignoring something. I can talk to you, or anyone else and have a difference of personal opinion, belief or religion. At the end of the day, we seek to find a middle ground. If not, we can respectfully agree to disagree. I don't have to ignore you or vice versa, simply because we have a difference of opinion. If the discussion came to earnings, money, etc...I would be more inclined to help teach someone how to invest, about financial literacy and about how to learn to save more, create a budget and focus on building generational wealth. If we're a brotherhood, why not help make life easier for a fellow brother and his family, change their life, their financial security, their legacy! Why not have processes and steps in place to teach and educate? Really get at the source of the problem on how to create equality? Topics I was not versed in, or made me uncomfortable, be that from lack of knowledge or because it does not align to my beliefs or values. I would listen to a person, hear them out. If there was no common ground of understanding? I would simply say, "sorry, we'll not agree fully on this topic, and to keep from being offensive or beating a dead horse, we can agree to disagree." We can still talk about it at another point and time, no fouls, no harm. But we created a mutual understanding through communication, not avoidance. Nobody was disrespected, there were no heated arguments or fist fights or gun battles. Just 2 people talking and seeing they could not come to a mutual path of understanding. I can live with that and respect it more than stepping behind a curtain like the Great Oz in the Wizard of Oz. I accuse people of being intelligent, in every conversation I enter. I leave it up to the person to prove me right or wrong.

The best way I like to explain this to non-masons is this: in every religion there is some form of the “golden rule” - in masonry there is something very simple. Meet others on the level. Treat others the way you would like to be treated, with respect and comradely as a human being. THAT is what masonry is trying to do, to gather people that want to make the world a better place for each other through the name of deity, whichever religion that takes form. Being free and true to me as a mason means putting aside labels and meeting people on the level, treating others as I would like to be treated myself and I don’t think any religion would have a problem with people thinking that way. Many people are scared of what they do not understand. If you’re curious, ask a mason. There are many of us and we would be happy to share with you what makes this fraternity special.

If freemasonry is not a religion, why would you have temples, altars, and rituals. A brotherhood would only have lodges, tables and etiquettes.
@TheRealist2022
@TheRealist2022 3 ай бұрын
@alexprice4229 The room in which we meet, is often called a temple (I call it a Lodge room tbh) because it is a loose depiction of King Solomon's temple...and not for any religious worship. Altar? Well, that's because the holy books being used (the ones pertinent to the assembled members) are placed on it. It's not called a Table because, well, anything can go on a table, can't it? Rituals? Freemasonry loves to use antiquated language. The word "ritual" simply means ceremony. To be clear, a ritual simply means a series of actions, repeated over and over...as our ceremonies...rituals, if you will...are repeated in exactly the same way, every time we carry them out. I hope that helps.

@TheRealist2022 Thanks for replying. Recreating King Solomons temple for ritual meetings is significant to hebrew magic and other occult uses. Yes, I know the definition of rituals and ceremonies. They are solely used in religious contexts. Also, your altar is a black cube. Placing religious books on it gives the illusion of a simple place to worship, but the black cube itself carries major religious symbolism and significance, and surely you're aware of that. Also, if your goal is to better men and society, why would you hide your teachings?

if it is not a religion, then why are there no religious symbols on masonic cemeteries in Scotland? I lived in Scotland for 8 years, and got to take a closer look at these old tombstones. You won't find any crosses at Greyfriears's cemetery, for example. That's where all the rich & famous are buried. At another cemetery for veterans, you can see that about 90% of the tombstones have no religious symbols whatsoever, instead they sport masonic symbols. Why is that?

If free masons cared about bettering mankind then they should have talked to free mason fdr about him stealing and banning gold ownership making everyone a slave to banks and governments printing new currency. You could even not talk about politics and just talk about printing money as being theft and wrong and not bettering mankind or equality.

Hi, thank you for this video. I joined a traditional observance lodge because I was interested in how the fraternity allows all religious ideas. After the 5 years it took to be raised, I had an issue with another brother and I was forced to demit. Everything happens for a reason. I now know that the bible is an unnecessary text and it’s interesting that even though Freemasonry claims to allow all religions, the fact that if the majority of the lodge is christian and you have to open lodge with the bible that is essentially saying that the bible is somehow superior. I personally think it’s a sign of weak character if one cannot discuss politics and religion without getting butt hurt. Like grow up and show your sovereignty. It’s a uniting act to say what you think even if it different from others

I have only been a Mason Officially for 5 months, but there is nothing more uplifting than entering my lodge or studying our literature and feeling the spirit in the midst. The silence on those things is to keep us United and focused on the goals of the lodge in sound mind for the benefit of everyone who accepts and receives. In the Bible God even allowed Joseph to abide in the house of pharaoh and assist him although they had different religious ideals. And GAOTU is a more than appropriate term, all things in physical and spiritual existence are designed, crafted, and manifested by the Almighty. We as men and masons are also able to design, craft, and manifest things in our level of ability and understanding. As masons we understand the God puts everything together and guides us to build better versions of ourselves, families, and communities. So mote it be!

A lot of people try to downplay our religion by simply stating the previous but never really mention why. They just say, oh he was a freemason. From my view point, after watching this video, freemasons dont talk about religion in their lodge. Which makes me think that religion is separate from freemasonry. Is this true? One of my dearest friends in Masonry is an LDS member. So we certainly would welcome you! And as you point out, we do not discuss religion IN lodge. Outside of Lodge a man can discuss anything he likes. But lodge time is to be harmonious regardless of faith or creed. Freemasonry is NOT a religion or a religious practice. It is a moral and philosophical practice rooted in the idea that all men are Brothers and equals under God. But the name that you use for God, whether its Jesus or Allah or something else, and your specific dogma, are up to you. Masonry doesn't care or interfere. My advice is to find a local lodge and pay them a visit (see when they meet and show up about 30 mins early. Don't call- there will only be people there on meeting days).

That’s fine. But not every Christian believes that. I can’t believe God would ignore prayers based on what amounts to a technicality “you didn’t say Jesus, so no prayers for you”. Yes, throughout history here, the two main things that has consistently caused the most division and strife amongst mankind, is religion and politics. When we go to Lodge, we should always strive to set aside all differences and opposing opinions, so that we may unite in peace and harmony as a brotherhood of man under the fellowship of GOD. In unity, we can accomplish all things that we desire to do. That is why I love Freemasonry so very much. We can all gather around one common central altar and pray and work to accomplish The Great Work, the magnum opus. As we go back out into the world to attend to our own individual lives, we can carry that influence and inspiration from what we experienced in Lodge with us to facilitate elevation, evolution and true spiritual growth and physical contentment.

No. There is a quote in Morals and dogma that people misconstrue regarding freemasonry as a religion. But if you actually read it, Pike is making the argument that faith is an inseparable part of freemasonry and not that masonry itself is a religion. Too often foolish people extract a single sentence or paragraph without looking at the entire piece. As for MPH- he wrote all of that well BEFORE he was a mason.
