having a fields guide at hand helped me alot also learning about the birds and their natural environment is helpful so you know where to look for specific birds. on my very first trip to go watch birds i was lucky i could see a comon kingfisher it was lucky and knowing where to look for the bird.

You video made me smile, especially after you compared birding with pokemons. It's so true!!! I never realized until now that's what most of the birdwatchers (including myself) are doing.

'Real life Pokemon' Is the most accurate description I've ever heard about birding! I've always thought of looking for birds as a really detailed video game and I think that's why I love it so much.

Loved this video. I don't know much about birds but I love watching them at my feeders. Now that I'm going to retire in 4 years I'm finding myself more interested in learning more. Retirement hobby? So I've dusted off my old stargazing binoculars (another hobby I may pick up in my free time) and looking more closely. Wow! So much more beautiful when you can see more detail. Gotta do this. Live in east central Wisconsin near Horicon Wildlife Refuge. Lucky me....

I agree that there's just something about using a book... I've never managed to get into using an app! I'm sure it's more convenient but I always just feel better lugging a book around

I love the association to Pokemon. Considering I'm just learning about Pokemon through my girlfriend haha. It's a fun comparison though. These were great tips, better than most "get started birding" videos I see.

Depends how much you're looking to spend! A Nikon D7200 is a great option, and it has enough features that you can grow as a photographer with it and wouldn't be too restricted. They've been around for a few years so you could probably find one used for pretty cheap 🙂
