It was after the Civil War and northern Michigan was growing rapidly thanks to railroads. As counties in the state formed, so did tensions around the politics of each county. This is a story about Manton and Cadillac who squared off to fight over where the county seat would be located.
It is an obscure story that is a interesting, a little surprising and amusing.

I'm going to assume the broom handle was broken over someone's dome. I used to salmon fish on the Manistee. I would walk down to the river at a place called the Udell Rollaway off M-55. It's a beautiful park, with an awesome boardwalk going down to the river. The location got its name from the logging that went on in the 1800's. I guess they would roll the lumber down the hills into the river. I had a few swings with the metal detector and found an old axe head and horseshoe. I love the high-quality informative content from this channel. I've discovered so many things about Michigan that I had no idea about.

Your vintage image of Cadillac near the beginning was taken at Maple Hill Cemetery. I highly recommend a visit to that cemetery if you ever get a chance. A few of the Cadillac-area lumber barons are burred there and their gravemarkers are really cool (and big!).

I have read that the downtown area of Cadillac was built on a large Indian burial ground and the bones from these natives were scattered all over that area. Your building is looking great Viking. :)

Lol nice story on our Michigan history. You should look into Petoskey history, lol. The main street used to be where the train tracks are now. If you look down the tracks near the courthouse, the storefronts face the tracks. According to my great-grandfather who owned businesses there. The railroad wanted to run the tracks down through the main street and the sheriff said no. Well, I guess the railroad waited until the sheriff went on a fishing trip and laid the tracks down overnight and he couldn't do anything after they were down.

This happen hundreds of time as each State as the country expanded West. Many times these tension were eventual settle peacefully by compromises. It why some Counties in Michigan have dual County Seats. With certain government functions are based in city, while others are at the other.

Restless Viking guy, you are great in your story and with the cartoon characters. You have any stories of Indian River, Petoskey, Harbor Springs area. On 9&10 News they did a two part story on KZfaq about a Catholic school for Native American Indian kids in Harbor Springs that were abused by the Nuns of the school. Verbal, physical, and sexual abuse on these kids was and is no place in society anywhere.

Great story. I enjoyed hearing it. I don't have a county seat in this fight, but lawful channels should always be tried and conceded. And whatever claim Cadillac had over the records and safes, they had other avenues to getting them without resorting to an armed mob. (Whether or not they were liquored up. They did admit to bringing booze on the train.) Michigan was a state, so Cadillac could have sought relief without sneaking in and stealing them or committing violence. I say we settle this with a hopscotch battle between highest ranking town officials. In public.

Restless Viking - you & Poppins need to explore the mysterous House of David down in Benton Harbor, Michigan You probably know something about it ? Beyond fascinating if not. But you could do 30-40 videos on it alone. Although much has been done - there is still much to explore and tell the World - and you guys and your channel could elevate the story even more. I believe it was broken-up - ONLY because it represented a socio-economic model at that time - that theatened capitalism
