The Indian caste system decreed that different domestic tasks be done by diiferent castes, therefore the Godden family was obliged to comply by employing as many servants needed to fulfil these tasks: there were strict divisions: a cook, a bearer and a gardener were worlds apart. This was the reason they had so many servants.
