@viridianstar Thanks! Effect sizes-and which to use-are quite a sticky issue in Psychology, so I didn't want to commit anyone to any particular one. I use partial eta squared, which can be obtained by selecting "estimates of effect sizes" in the "options" menu after you have defined your independent variables.

Hi - thanks for your comment. Sounds like you need a 4 (mice) x 3 (time) mixed ANOVA. If the interaction is significant, it suggests that the mice are behaving differently to other mice across your repeated measure (time). You could follow this up with separate one-way repeated measures ANOVAs, one for each mouse.

Hi Jim, thanks for the video. I have a question related to test. What if for the time constrain, half of my participants goes through HighSwitch and Low Repeat conditions and another half go through HighRepeat and LowSwitch condition, which means instead of all participants going through all 4 conditions, they go through only 2 condition but still experience each level of each factor. In this type of experimental design, can I still run 2-way repeated measure ANOVA? I look forward for your answer. Thanks, Romisa

I got your message, but have been very busy with teaching. It is a 3 x 2 x 2 design, as you say in (a). However, if you are just using a difference score (that is, leg strength after 30 minutes minus leg strength at beginning), then it would just be a 3 (group) x 2 (time) design.

@cyoungner1a2n Sounds like a mixed factorial design to me, with "group" as a between-subjects variable. I haven't done a vid on that yet, but you may be able to find an alternative in the mean time. Hope that helps!
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 12 жыл бұрын
No, that is a mixed design as handedness is a between-subjects factor. Your "time" factor is repeated measures (i.e. all participants are tested in the morning *and* afternoon). What you describe is a 2x2 mixed design.
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 12 жыл бұрын
I plan to!
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 12 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a mixed design because you have one factor that is between-subjects (age group) and one factor that is within-subjects (time of test, Time 1 - Time 2). Thus, you would do a 2x2 mixed ANOVA.

It would be a “three way Anova Repeated measures?” I would have to do the two-way repeated-measures anova in spss? How to put all these datas in a SPSS table?
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, it sounds like a 2-way ANOVA (a 3 x 7). I am not sure what you mean by which p-value you need to look for. You will have one p-value associated with your main effect of group, one for the main effect of time, and one for the interaction. All might be relevant for your purposes.

Hi Jim, I seem to be having a problem understanding a few things. Correct any phase I get it wrong- firstly before starting we would have to suggest a null hypothesis. So my case study is- There will be no significant difference between a diet with exercise and just a diet. So my two independent variables are diet and exercise. After I would have to check whether it is parametric or not by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) Shapiro-Wilks. Once we have the score than 0.05 we can tell if it is parametric. Then we have to identify whether they are related or unrelated. Now here is the tricky bit where I get stuck... The data I have has info like Body Mass Index with follow up test, for example, baseline value, then week 6 & week 12 and a follow up , weight (the same procedure as BMI) , age, step count (exercise) and what type of program they are in. I am not sure whether I put all this information on Spss and what goes on the within-subject-variables or the between subject factors. On top of that I have to check the interaction between the two factors... I could send you the data so you could tell me what I'm doing wrong. Would you like me to send you the data? Regards
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 8 жыл бұрын
+franci188 Hi - you need to do a separate independent variable for each of your dependent variables. So, for BMI, it seems you have a 3-way mixed design. Your factors here seem to be Exercise (with 2 levels?), Diet (with 2 levels?), and Time (with 3 levels: baseline, 6-week, 12-week). Time is a repeated measure (within-subjects), whereas Exercise and Diet I assume are between-subjects factors. Does that make a little sense?

Hi there, your vids are excellent. Just wondering if you could help me with which type of ANOVA to use. I have four different mood conditions (sad, happy etc.). I am measuring individuals moods at time 1 and am measuring their moods at time 2 after the mood inductions (to see if the mood inductions have worked). The mood measures are questionnaires with four questions on their mood. Is this a two way repeated measures ANOVA or one way repeated measures ANOVA? How would I do this on SPSS?
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 9 жыл бұрын
Hi - it depends on what you mean by "mood conditions". If you mean there are 4 ways to manipulate mood, then it's a 2-way ANOVA with the factors mood condition and time. How to do it in SPSS all depends on whether the factors are manipulated within subjects, between subjects, or whether it's a mixed design.

Hi Jim: I have 8 participants who repeated 2 different conditions and are measured over 4 different time points. Is it appropriate for me to use a two ways repeated measures ANOVA or Split ANOVA? The other question is how to perform post hoc test for example, if I find a significance for time? How can I then pin point where is the significance (over the 4 times points)? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dear Jim Grange! If i have 3 group with different treatments and I would like to analyze the values of 1 DV in these groups with the progression of time....(in 7 time points) this repeated measures two-way ANOVA is correct? Furthermore maybe it is a stupid question but which p value is relevant for me in the output window in this case? The interperetation of my results is difficult for me yet....which detail tells me that there is a significant disparity between my treatment groups?

Hi Jim, Many thanks. I have a question on a study design. I have three groups of subjects (3 different types of athletes) and each individual is tested under two exercise conditions (condition 1 & condition 2, one week apart - is this one factor with two levels?). At each test day, I look at the immediate pre and post exercise decline in strength. I want to see if the 3 groups respond differently to each exercise condition, both within subject and between subject (groups?). Does this qualify as a 3x2 repeated measures ANOVA? Thanks.
@JimGrange.
@JimGrange. 9 жыл бұрын
Hi. "Time" is one of your factors, yes (with 2 levels: week 1 and week 2). I'm not sure what you mean by pre- and post-exercise; this could be another factor with 2 levels, or it might just be one dependent variable. If it's the former, you have a 3 (subject group) x 2 (time) x 2 (pre/post exercise) MIXED design, because subject group is between subjects and the other two factors are repeated measures. If it's the latter, you have a 3 (group) x 2 (time) mixed design. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the response. Just to clarify my experiment with an example: On week-1, subject-1 will be measured for maximum leg strength (pre-strength-condition_1), then undergo 30 min of one type of fatiguing exercise (condition-1), and at the end of the 30 minutes will be measured again for maximum leg strength (post-strength-condition_1). I want to find out the loss of strength caused by the 30 min exercise ( this is the difference between the two measurements).On week-2, the same subject will undergo the same experimental setup, this time using a different 30 min fatiguing exercise regime (condition-2). I will then have two measurements on week-2 (pre-strength-condition_2 & post-strength-condition_2) and can calculate the loss of strength. I want to know which fatiguing exercise condition caused the greater loss of strength. This experiment will be done for all subjects in the three groups (cricketers, football players and hockey players). I want to know if loss of strength in each condition is different by group. 1) Does this still qualify as a 3 (subject group) x 2 (time) x 2 (pre/post exercise) MIXED design as you suggested? 2) If I add a third time point for repeated measurements (week-12), will that be 3x3x2 MIXED ? Apologies for the long message!

Hi - it's impossible to tell from the information you give, as you don't mention whether the conditioned and treatments factors are repeated measures or not. If they are ALL repeated measures, then you have a 3-way repeated measures design; if at least one is between-subjects, then it's a 3-way mixed design. Hope that helps!

Jim Grange Thanks Jim! Just to clarify, my results will be repeated measures (proportion of time in correct area for 7 consecutive days), and I will have those results over the 7 days for both factors: conditioned and treatment. Those 2 factors also have 2 levels (conditioned: trained and not trained) and (treatment: food 1 or food 2) so I will have results for 4 groups (trained+food 1; trained+food 2; untrained+food 1 and untrained+food 2). So from what you said as I will have 2 between group factors (treatment and condition) and the repeated measure is the within subjects factor so its a 3-way mixed design??? Thank you again!!!
