I've been a Canon user since 2011 but no, sadly I'm not on their payroll... I truly wanted this camera to kill it but sometimes, it falls short. After a little more than two weeks of use, here is my (hybrid shooter) real world Canon R5 review with some sample photos, ungraded/graded footage, some C-Log shots, some 4K 120p & 4K 60p slow motion and much more. Most of this video was shot on the R5 in 4K 23.976fps unless otherwise mentioned, or if the camera was in the shot, then it was filmed on the Panasonic S1H.
There are already tons of technical reviews out there that did all the tedious tests, this review video is more about how the camera performed in real situations. Sadly, as much as I wanted to avoid talking about it, the camera's overheating limitations did play a large role in my opinion about this camera and because of that major design flaw, I won't recommend it to hybrid shooters (with the current firmware). But having said that, if you're mindful of what causes the overheating, many people could probably make this camera work for them if you don't mind missing some shots here and there. However, for Canon to hang on to their reputation as a leader in the industry, I believe they really need to address these (seemingly artificial) limitations in a firmware update or with a full blown hardware recall because it's 2020 and many of us are hybrid users. From my limited time with this camera, I've concluded that it's near impossible to use this camera professionally on a photo and video gig, the way it was intended (or at least, the way it was marketed!).
Many thanks to all the people who took part in this review. Thanks, to Evan Shay who setup the photoshoot with the 1970's Dodge challenger for his album cover, as well as his friend Francis Leduc who filmed some behind the scenes for this video and of course Nick for lending us his beautiful Vanishing Point replica 1970's Dodge Challenger. Lastly, a quick shout out to Taylor Lamothe and Sam Brisson for the short BTS content of a commercial shoot we did earlier this month.

I mainly shoot stills and have had the *temperature warning* icon show up on me during a few of the weddings I shot with the EOS R5 bodies. It was the white icon, not the red one but if I ever get to the point where it turns red I'll really be worried. So far it has been great for stills and I've only been shooting video at 1080 24fps so no issues there either. I'll probably start doing some 4k video this year and I'll see if I have any problems.
@BryanWilkat

That's interesting... You should join the Canon R5 group(s) on Facebook and tell people about your experience. There's been a lot of people arguing on there about the overheating issue, some saying they never get it, some saying they get it from shooting stills, some saying that's fake news, etc... Like you, I had a similar experience, where just taking photos the camera got "too hot" and I couldn't shoot any 4K slowmo, which is something Canon never mentioned in their marketing... I could still take photos and film in regular 4K 24fps modes but I think that's where a lot of people are getting upset about the camera, no one wants to get locked out of a feature before even using it. I still love the camera, but those little annoyances are difficult to deal with on paying gigs. You never want to tell a client "no, I can't get the shot right now..." because your camera isn't keeping up, it makes you look like an amateur who didn't bring the right tool for the job.

@@BryanWilkat - I haven't been on Facebook in several months but I'm on Photography On The Net and there are several very active conversations about the EOS R5. I've never done a KZfaq video (vlog) but plan to put one together comparing my journey from the Canon 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5 as a stills shooter (who does occasional video but only at 1080 24fps). I may have even got the temperature warning on the first wedding I shot with the R5 and didn't even notice it. The camera arrived on Thursday night and I shot the wedding the following day so everything was really new and I may have missed the icon. I got the temperature warning on almost every wedding since then, and the same thing on my second R5 body as well. The last wedding I shot I turned the power off whenever I wasn't actively using the cameras and made it through the whole day with no temperature warnings. I plan to get more into shooting hybrid and your video was very helpful.

This piece of s...overheating when power on, even you don't do anything else...
@JaredRibic
@JaredRibic 3 жыл бұрын
@@S.T.VisualStories - It didn't really overheat, it was just a temperature warning. The same temperature warning exists on the 5D Mk4, although I've never had it happen on the 5D Mk4 because I don't shoot with the LCD (Live Mode) with the 5D Mk4, so I never had that problem but I've heard that others have. Turning the cameras off when not actively shooting has prevented the *temperature warning* icon from showing up on the R5 bodies. I don't do as much video, especially not much 4k, so for me the R5 isn't limiting at all. If I were a filmmaker I'd get a proper camera for video but I'm mainly a stills shooter and have no regrets getting the EOS R5 bodies.

@@JaredRibic Im an ordinary Hybrid Shooter (5DMKIII + 5 lenses, L series) 70% stills 30% video. Canon made a revolution with the 5D series cameras. Unfortunately it took a long time to get involved with Mirorless technology which of course is the future. R5 / R6 is the 3rd and 4th attempt in this category. And it is an absolute technical disaster that cannot be solved with any software. It can not offer 4k video without cropping other than 30p, for 4.000 & 2.500 euros !!! The most unpleasant thing is that these cameras have the serious problem of overheating from the moment you power them, if someone tries to take photos for 1-2 hours, they will find that the time for video is minimal !!! A large company that respects its customers must admit the wrong design and withdraw them immediately. SONY with clearly much better experience and technology in mirorelees cameras I suspect that very soon will present cameras for HYBRID SHOOTERS (not the A7SIII) at better prices and will simply kill CANON. The rest will turn to mobile cameras! Can you really imagine all the big photo companies after 5 years? There are already mobile phones with 4k60 even with 8K and they DO NOT OVERHEAT ....(most of them with Sony's cameras...) CANON is in vertigo and reacts very slow....

Great video. Hope you had a chance to update to 1.1.0. It's better. What's not as well known is you can recover pretty quickly just using like a portable fan on the port side of the camera. Anywhere from 1-5 minutes should get you back up and running. 120fps gets the camera hottest so that will take a little longer to recover than 4K60, 4K-Fine and even 8K.

@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 4 жыл бұрын
Those lenses are designed for crop sensor cameras. I don't have any EF-S lenses to do tests for you, but technically you should be able to use them in certain modes on the R5 because there's an option in the menu, to crop in on the sensor but you'll be limited to what frame rates and resolutions you can film in. The same goes for photos, you can crop in on the sensor but you'll be using less megapixels and that kind of defeats the purpose of the R5.

Have you gotten the new firmware yet? If so, is it a substantial difference? I'm a hybrid shooter as well and I'm really considering the R5, but the overheating is just such a huge let down.
@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the new firmware made a difference for sure. At first glance it didn't seem like a huge improvement but the more I shoot with it, the more the camera is growing on me. I've only had the overheat warning once since the beginning of September and it happened near the end of the shoot so I did the quick date change hack and snuck a few more shots in. I'll revisit the R5 in a future review, my main concern with it now is that it seems to have a lot of compatibility issues with 3rd party lenses and the IBIS isn't performing that well, most of the time I think I'd rather turn it off because its jerking around on pans but the only way to turn it off with a IS lens is to flip the IS switch to off and then there's no stabilization at all! It's like they made it all or nothing, so I hope they change that in a firmware update to give users the choice of which IS they want to use.
@andrewabballe
@andrewabballe 3 жыл бұрын

Hey man, generally speaking I like to push my log profiles over a half stop or a full stop depending on the situation. Its what I do on every Sony, Panasonic, Fuji or Canon I've ever shot with and it always gave me good results. Check your histogram or scopes and make sure nothing is clipping the highlights when you do this -and if something is clipping, you can set your zebras to 95-100% to see what it is and if you're okay losing that part of the image, then roll it. If not, dial it back a bit. The number one mistake people make when exposing log footage is under exposing because bring the exposure back up in post is almost sure to introduce unwanted noise, regardless of what ISO you shot at. There's a part in this video where I underexposed a bit by accident and when I tried to push it in post, the image started falling apart pretty quick!

So what is a better hybrid camera? The 12MP A7S3 camera that is designed to primarily shoot video. The 61MP A7R4 that cannot shoot 4k60, 4k120, or downsampled 8K Or the Panasonic camera with its lousy AF.
@BryanWilkat
@BryanWilkat 4 жыл бұрын
Hahah, that's such a big question to answer! It really comes down to you and what features are important for the work you do. I'm not personally a big fan of AF, I find most of the time it's clunky regardless of the camera but that's because I'm pretty comfortable pulling focus or in certain situations, having an AC pull focus for me. If you Vlog, if you film yourself for a KZfaq channel or if you encounter a lot of run and gun shoots where good AF helps you get the shot, then you're going to want to consider a Canon or newer Sony. I think 4K 120fps is amazing to have on any camera but I'm also very happy right now upscaling 1080 120fps clips from my S1H (or my friends 1DXmarkii) into a 4K project. On the topic of frame rates, I just hope to see Canon add a 1080p super slowmotion option without overheating limits, because that would at least make the R5 more of a contender among the other cameras in its class.

Here's to your biased narrative. Let's talk professionalism and your "Impossibility" theory. There are 24 video recording modes in the Canon EOS R5 of which there are only 3 basically capped at 15 minutes. Without even going into a conversation of external media. This has been exausted at nauseum. If one can't read the manual, media alerts, and other released documentation from ones peers the comments infer that the entire world should disregard talent, skill, and resoursefullness. Preparation and attention to one's device owners manual is apart of professionalism. Use equipment for the designed and intended purpose. It's important to note that you left off a very important fact. The device has been used successfully by many other highly skilled professionals in various applications. It's just YOU that's it doesn't work for. That very important fact should be in your narrative but is obviously left out. You attempted to dress up what is obvious. Good video work, however um not buying the narrative. I know better. There's no substitute for skill and talent however reading and following the owners manual and instructions is a prerequesite for professionalism. Anyone can cut corners. Too many video experts simply saying let's just set the instructions asside and let me operate this camera how I normally do. Aint hapening. Imagine a pilot attempting to fly and land a 747 based on his knowledge of a Cesna. Yeah, some of you guys are showing off some good talent but are lacking in some other parts of your craft. In that resourcefullness column. I didn't follow the instructions, manuals, or other manufacturer reccomendations, so the device is flawed. Really?

JohnAllen Magee No. Documentation doesn’t matter when shooting stills eats into your video capacity. Those times should be available regardless of stills. Then it’s operating within its limits and intended use. This straw man argument of them releasing heat limits is dumb when stills and resting state erode that time.

Storytelling and creative talent are among the most important ingredients for great videos. But, the tool has be able to do what you need reliably. With the R5 the camera is controlling you, not the other way around (as it should be). The R5 is a useless device for professional video work. Deal with it. Stop making excuses. Canon screwed up, or they intentionally crippled this camera. Both are bad options. If you are mostly into video, do yourself a favor and buy the A7S3 or a GH5. However, if you only shoot stills the R5 is a fantastic camera.
