I really enjoyed this video. My dad had a David Bradley with a sulky, rototiller, lawn mower, and snow blower. What a joy to operate! You could not wear one out. Foolishly, I scrapped it in the 1980's - would love to have another one.

What great memories I have of a two wheel tractor . Not only did I the garden with one when I was a kid , but also hooked a wagon to the back of it and road all over the place ! About 1963 thru 1965 .... good times !!!

My father had a Simplicity when i was young 1970's I scraped it out in the 90's. Still kicking myselt today! Great vidio.

my Dad had one and he was so proud of it. I remember the rope dangling near the rear and the directional levers to raise to determine which wheel spin. he dropped it off to get work done on it back in North Carolina and his body failed him so he never went back to retrieve it before he passed. Quebec is somewhat (too) far away to come over and have a close look to your equipment, but I do agree for 100% with your "exposé" on the efficiency of the equipment you use. I envy in particular your small compost of manure spreader. I wish I could copy from Mr James Potter a charm allowing me to "diagon-ally" it 5000 miles east as to have it landed in my garden... Love this video! I've found pictures online before, but never a video with lots of answers. My dad bought a David Bradley in the late 40's to work the garden next to our cottage in Wisconsin. He had the garden plowed the first time by a local farmer who used mules. The following year, the farmer traded the mules in on a Ford-Ferguson tractor and Dad decided, with the DB, he could do stuff himself. My cousin thought he was crazy, but we spent a couple of months at the cottage and we had a large garden all the time. Our DB had a 1½-HP B&S. The first mod was to make it easier to shut it down. You had to lift the hood to short out the plug. Dad bored a hole in the hood and stole some pieces of our Tinkertoys to make a push stick to short it with the hood closed. He bought the sickle bar (still wish I had it!), a single bottom plow, cultivator, lawn roller, and dozer blade for it. He made a garden cart to tow behind and he could stand in it and drive it. He also made a belt-driven cordwood saw that it powered. He tried towing a couple of old cast iron reel mowers with it, but that never worked out. They jammed too easily and would just slide. Finally, he bought a kit to add reverse to it. It was actuated with a push rod with a ball end. It added at least another belt and pulley at a cost of some already scarce power. It surely was handy to get out of tight places though. It didn't have ag tires. He used the snow tires and chains he kept from his '39 DeSoto.

Wow, I just traded a running car for a David Bradley and another 2 wheel tractor that will need alot of TLC.. but I cut my teeth on small engine stuff That is a fantastic collection of history. Thank you for taking the time to do this video.

Thank you for showing your tractors and telling us about them. I have a Simplicity walk behind that my father gave me. From what I can figure out online, it's a model from the late 1940's. My father and one of his friends went splits on it around the mid 1960's. I remember that my father's share of the purchase was $100. That was serious money for him. It was great to watch you talking about your tractors especially because you are so well versed in the history and operation of each model. It was a pleasure to listen to you.

Great video! I had a David Bradley many years ago when I did garden tilling as a springtime sideline job. I used a Troybilt horse model tiller to do already broken ground. For new gardens, I used the DB with a single bottom plow to break the ground, then the disc harrow attachment to bust up the clods, then went over it with the Troybilt to finish it. That was the ideal combo of machines for the task. Sadly had to sell the DB at some point when I moved and had no room for it. I still regret doing that. The DB's power was amazing. I'm pretty sure it had a 1 3/4 hp engine, that had the pulling power of a modern 20 hp riding tractor. Maybe the DB's transmission was the reason?

Great video. Grandpa had a Simplicity 2 wheel tractor for his garden , has a big 5 horse Briggs, 12 inch wheels, and a cultivator. Moved up to her house in 1993 and revived out for a few years, but it had rusted wheels and dry rotted tires, and eventually traded it for a welder. Dad had a Standard Twin that had high cleared metal wheels. I remember him using it before he got a Rototiller from Wards.

My dad had a David Bradley. I used to love working with it. Did a great job for it's size.

Him- People are inherently not smart when it comes to machinery. There was a thread in a homesteading group shaming women who wear pants. I commented wearing a skirt on the ranch, with the work I do every day could get me killed. Power tools, tractors, barb wire, it's romantic but not practical, and was fully ripped for it until a lady spoke up about her sister who was sucked into a Troybuilt tiller by her long skirt. She lived, but it wasn't pleasent. Dad taught me young. No hanging jewelry, hair up, no loose clothing. Anything a machine can grab, it will.

I grew up in the 1950s and 60s with my dad’s David Bradley. We had a cycle bar for the front, a one bottom plow for the back, and a small square trailer that hooked up to the tractor as well. Dad used the cycle bar to clear a field for neighbor kids to play baseball. Mostly the DB was used to plow the garden.

Nice video, thanks! You ever play with a Kaiser Frazier? I have 2, both 46 models, one was purchased new by my grandfather. Every year I get the old girl out and plow the garden. Not much, just 20' x 40'but I like to play with it! Fresh fuel, and she will start in 3 pulls or less. I can remember as a boy trying to use it, I tried to drive it, and it won. You got to let it do what it wants to do, guide it, and it's fine. You try to drive it, and it will give you a workout for sure!!! And being a 2 cycle, she sounds wicked! Still scares my 32yo daughter! Your comment, "missin a view pieces" when talking about the saw attachment on the wife's tractor, love it! Ya cant fix stupid. Thanks again

My dad also started out his rototilling business back in the forties with a Howard Gem, the best walk behind rototiller in the world. I found one in a barn about 20 years ago and fixed it up and used it for my rototilling business for several years. I think mine was from the 40s or 50s. It had a J.A. Prestwich dry sump engine on it. The best walk behind rototiller in the world. They were selling for around $10,000 when they quit making them in the 80s. They rototill every bit as nice and pretty as a tractor mounted rototiller. It's sad that all the people that do Howard Gem videos on KZfaq don't know how to do a professional-looking job with them. They use those fabulous rototillers and try to do a lousy looking job like it was done with $100 piece of junk from the hardware store. 😭

Back in the forties my dad started out with a Perrin tractor, I think it was out of Oregon. I have a picture of it somewhere with the name of the tractor on the back of the photo. I tried to look it up and I cannot find anything on the internet about it.

I love walk behind tractors . Dont have many mayby 5 of them only 1 is running. My health is bad enough i cant hardly get around anymore. But still love them.

Seen at 20:22 in the video, I inherited a Surgi-Saw from my dad in 2015, I've only found one mention of it online, and it also stated that it was the predecessor to the DR Brush Mower. Very scary machine if you're looking at it from the business end. :)
