My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

#logcabin #bushcraft #offgrid #survival
One man leaves the city life behind to build a cheap off grid log cabin and homestead in the Canadian wilderness, including a log home, an outdoor kitchen, an outhouse, a woodshed and a sauna bathhouse. Building mostly with hand tools, Shawn James harvests building materials from the forests north of Toronto, Canada and crafts them into functional tools and shelters using traditional woodworking tools and methods. He practices bushcraft and survival skills every day, including fire starting, tree identification and harvesting, wild edible foraging, fishing, hunting, camping in the summer and winter, travelling by canoe and snowshoe, navigation and water collection and purification.
Continue watching in 2019 as Shawn finishes the sauna, plants a forest garden for fruit and vegetables, builds an underground root cellar, ice house and cheese cave, a timber frame workshop and a remote hunt camp closer to fish and game.

After a stressful day I play this video and it helps me fall asleep. Not because it’s boring or uninteresting, it’s because it’s peaceful and beautiful. I know you didn’t make the video intended as a sleeping aid but it works great for me. Beautiful scenery, self reliance, good craftsmanship all combined to relax me enough to forget my troubles. Thanks

At approx 1:11:50 when the soft song starts to play I realized what this entire video is a analogy of, LIFE I’m laying in bed approx 4 years after I lost my 16 year old boy to a fast 5 weeks of cancer. Tired with a loss of why I’m here now I try to keep my mind busy so I won’t weep any more. A heart can only break so hard. I’m 55 and had a heck of a life but I’m tired now and don’t really want to keep going. My boy was the best boy a father could ever hope for and I cannot believe he is gone and with him went my heart Life is a riddle, a strange thing to experience once you get really deep into it This man did what so many dream and want to do My son and I built a shack in the woods together. Nothing compared to this guy but we experienced much of the same thing. Hard work, perseverance, patience, pacing oneself, hope, vision and best of all peace of being there. For me having my boy there made it as close to heaven as this old earth could ever be. Love is what makes it Yet with love comes pain Hat off too you sir and appreciate you sharing your experience. The timely addition of the music painted a great picture sadly so many today have never and will never taste. Brought back good memories Life is a strange thing

Ante Mandaric Ante Mandaric I appreciate your concern but was very troubled and offended you would preach to me after what I shared. I shared what I did in a knee jerk reaction to difficult grief in my life , late at night after being stirred to memories me and my boy shared from watching this video Grief is not a sign or signal for you to jump and try to convert someone Don’t you know that Jesus rebuked the church of that day for doing and acting the same way ? Your reply to me that my heart is a heart of stone and I need the Holy Spirit and conviction of my sins ??!! Are you serious ? Let me explain something to you even though I maybe should be bigger and just let God deal with you I have been a Christian for 35 years with a much stronger testimony then yours. What makes you think I need saving ? Because I spoke out my grief ? Because I said I didn’t know what my purpose is now ? I’m not a perfect man by any stretch as neither are you and yes I’m still in grief as I loved my boy with all my heart My hope of seeing my boy again is the hope I hold onto and the kind of real faith that’s required to live through this. I’m sorry but people like you give the Lord a bad name. Jesus said don’t tell people you love Him SHOW them. If He gave you a new heart then I suggest you use your heart to respond to people not a drive to tell people how to get saved. Jesus said it is the Love of God that draws men NOT judgment. You passed judgment and expect anyone to respond ? It will never ever happen. You put that religious reply on here for the world to see as a representative of Jesus Christ and your word is I have a hard heart and need to repent ? It would of been completely different if you would of used a scripture to comfort or encourage Then if I wasn’t a Christian believing man maybe I would think about it or contemplate it But to jump right into someone tell them how bad you were then how good you are and tell someone their heart is hard when all they are doing is grieving is, well, uncalled for and out of place Jn 5:39. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and yet scripture points towards me Please don’t respond as will only make it worse. Don’t represent yourself as a Christian unless you do so with the love of God in your heart. Then from the abundance of the heart the mouth will speak what God wants Otherwise the Bible says your a sounding gong

Hi everybody. This video is essentially a movie of my life over the last two years from the first day of spring two years ago to the first day of spring yesterday. This is a video I've wanted to make since I started building the homestead - my evolution from a sheet metal worker turned corporate executive then to whatever it is I am today. It was fun and interesting to edit this video, especially since it's a lot of content and a lot of changes condensed into a relatively short hour and a half. This is my journal. If you enjoyed this, my weekly videos include over one hundred more hours of cabin life and wilderness living so please subscribe so you don't miss anything. This year will be more interesting as I continue learning to live closer to the land. There are ALOT of questions and assumptions from new viewers about how I film/edit/upload, if I replant trees, who the 2nd dog belonged to, etc. You will find all the answers in my previous videos. I have uploaded a video every week detailing the entire process over the past two years. Thank you to all of you who have been following my journey from the start and welcome those of you who are new here.

A few years ago I lost my Dad and my wife and family, so I drowned my series in a bottle of booze and pills. A couple years ago I went camping and it ended up with me staying in my tent for 2 years now. I live off-grid, not to the extent of this guy but I live in my tent in the mountains all alone. I am close to a big city and food shopping is not too far away from me. I took a job working from home and I love it. Being out in the mountains for 2 years now it has helped me through all the pain I endured. It is crazy how close I am t a city but still so far away. I will never live any other way again. Some times its really hard and money is always tight cause I work on commission but the peace I have found inside of me is priceless.

Escaping to the woods off the grid has a calming effect on me. I am retired, worked hard for 48 years, and now have the time and a decent income to occasionally find real solitude outside away from the noise of traffic and lights. It’s not that I do not enjoy others because I do, but being alone in the woods provides an alternate healthy perspective. However I must admit, this gentleman is much more resourceful than me. I cheat a bit and have solar panels that charge a couple deep cell 12 volt batteries for me that I use mainly for led lighting inside.

@@martinkorn2668 Dude I was joking!I am also a muslim and from Bangladesh.Muslims have lots of issues because they dont read anything but Quran. But things are changing,,,,at least here in my country....as an example 300 madrashas (islamic school) are now teaching on gender equality, menstruation, physical changes at puberty, about condom and stuff like that and you have to understad one thing muslims hate these things....muslims are learning about STDs and condom in madrasha! To me its like we are on moon!

Massive amount of respect for men who walk into the wilderness and not survive but thrive. Sadly we do not have such wilderness here in The Netherlands and the nature we do have we are not allowed to set up camp unless you get permission. Iam 40 years old, working 12 hours a day and at the end of each month after paying all my bills and bullshait not much is left. Looking at this man makes me dream of leaving the modern world with my wife and dog and kids to live the life. But i cant even do that as our kids cannot live without wifi, smartphones and pizza. it would make it a living hell and a failed journey. I envy you sir, being such a splendid craftsman and just leaving the city behind. I watched every second of it and you made me smile all the way. Godspeed and may life grant you much luck and happiness and merry xmass. Greetings from The Netherlands.

Phe rocks - I feel the same I couldn’t have said it any better myself, I have tons of respect and admiration for this man, I love how he keeps coming up with ideas to improve the inside of the cabin and he accomplished it all on his own with true skill and dedication , and when he goes out in the wilderness with his dog it looks like heaven on earth, just man and mans best friend, when I was scrolling through the KZfaq videos and stumbled upon this video I looked directly at the thumbnail without reading it and right off the back I thought it was a video of the Hatfields and McCoys, on the thumbnail he looks exactly like Kevin Costner when he starred in the movie Hatfields and McCoys

Trust me, as a 16 year old boy I can 100% say that your kids would thank you for this. Sadly it´s just not possible in mainland Europe, only places I could think of where this could be possible are Sweden,Finnland, Russia or Norway. This is the dream.

Inacreditável ele lavrar as madeiras com ferramentas rudimentares. Deixou tudo esquartejado e aparelhado. Incrível como ele carregou as baterias de drone e câmera sem energia elétrica. E se mostrou inapto para manusear o serrote. Parabéns para a equipe dele.

I reckon Mr. or Ms. Oggie Doggie made this arduous project easier. Yes - a Man's best friend. 65 years ago my father built the home that they still live in. He had no knowledge but would ride his bike each night to see the work of other builders. I remember 55 years ago he built the double garage. Brilliant man. But he refuses to acknowledge that the then tempory lounge roof is still there. I've stopped laughing about it as it still there, as well as when put up 6 decades ago.
