I once left my laptop on a shared bicycle and it took me a whole day to realize it. It was only a day later when I viewed the monitor and realized that three guys had taken my computer. At first I thought the computer would never be found. But when I took a chance and asked the lost and found at the subway station next to the bicycle , I actually found my computer there. It turned out that the boys were afraid of losing my computer, so they sent it to the lost and found for safekeeping. China is not only very safe, but also has a lot of warm-hearted people.

I first visited China in 2016 as a solo older female traveler. I arrived with exactly the same misconceptions that you had but this changed very quickly! I’ve never felt as safe traveling solo anywhere as I do in China. I had a similar experience with my phone in Shanghai. Went back after an hour and found it exactly where I had been sitting. I’ve now been back to China six times, traveling all over and made it my business to learn everything I can about China. Learning basic mandarin was a game changer especially traveling in more remote areas. I’ve made so many friends who I keep in touch with and visit when I can. Wonderful country and people ❤ visiting China is a must do!!

I'm German, living in Hong Kong 🇭🇰 since 35 years and I have travelled China for 35 years. I remember the time when China wasn't so save in the 90th but it was still more save than in Europe. I've been in every corner of China and my family is German/Chinese mixed. When I say anything positive about China in my German home country, people always telling me that I live "too long" in Asia 🌏. Therefore, thank you for people like you that show China 🇨🇳 as it is today ! ❤🙏🇨🇳🇭🇰🇩🇪🙏❤️

It’s a reverse brainwash. There are most Chinese people reading English than other way around. So Chinese have access both side of the world, news wise, however people in the west only has one source of news, so you are limited to whatever the west feed you.

My family moved to Canada from China in 1990s when my son was 9 years old. One day my son asked me - Dad, why the China I was told in my class is not the China we just left? I don’t think China is as bad as my teacher taught us. I had a conversation with my son’s teacher for the concern and offered that I can provide the updated information of China for her teaching. However the teacher told me that what she taught the students are what the provincial authority taught the schools to teach, she can’t do anything else. It was the time that Canada/ America was in the friendliest time with China. Now I am not sure what the schools are teaching but I do know that media (Canada and America) lie every day when they “report” China. Believe me, they simply lie - CBC, CTV, CNN, Fox whatever.

After I retired, my wife and I lived in Guangzhou for 2 years. I agree with you 100%. We felt completely save there, even to the point of my wife walking alone back from the subway to our apartment at 11pm. We were respected and even honored (gray hair and a cane helped). When we had to move back to the USA, we were frightened and appalled at the violence here.

For exercising of my legs, I frequently walked up 20 flights of stairs back to my home in my apartment building after midnight in Shenzhen . I left the park at 10:30pm in Shenzhen after doing exercise there almost every day. China is so very safe. I am a woman.

Tons of people have been asking us about safety as a foreigner in China. We have been all over local neighbourhoods, districts and cities and haven’t felt unsafe once. Obviously, different cities will be different like every country in the world and it all depends on different factors. But in general, China is extremely safe for foreigners.

As an American who lived and worked in China for nearly 10 years, until covid hit, I never once feared walking the streets or alleyways, day or late night. If locals stared, it was simply from curiosity and excitement to see a foreigner in person. School children would often approach to practice their English, politely saying hello and asking what country I'm from. Now that I'm living in New England, I often witness ugly behavior nearly everywhere I go, from road rage to privileged wives of the wealthier class being rude those they feel are below them. I often miss China and hope to one day retire there.

same situation here😂. My husband is Malaysian and we live in Malaysia for years now we moved to Africa. Before he met me all he knows about china is big crowded and people are all brain washed by government. Now we've been together for ten years. The more he knows about china, the more he loves china and Chinese government😂. He defends china in front of everybody and gets extremely mad especially when seeing some Chinese people criticizing their own country. He thinks we are living in heaven already. He admires Chinese government A LOT ! 😅 even will argue with my parents.

it's a welcoming country. as an american growing up watching western media portrayal of China you and many others hit the nail on the head. Everyone's perception of China is what we are being fed on media. Every youtube video of first hand experience of westerners in China Echo the same sentiment as yours. and I myself traveled to China as well and agree with you 100%. Everyone that traveled to China are shocked to learn and see what they dont see in western media. On the contrary, imagine being Chinese in America and constantly being looked down on and being told to go back to your country because of the many perception of what is being protrayed of your culture and country. While westerners who travel to China or live/work in China are being greeted and treated so nicely and welcomed everywhere they go.

The first time I heard about social credit score was from my American boss. About 6 years ago, he was on a business trip in Beijing. I jay walked, then he said “oh~ you are gonna lose your social credit score”. I even didn’t know what that was, and he explained to me. LoL, western media made up a China in a parallel universe.

Several years ago, the central government presented a half-baked idea, which some parts of China ran with, and then everyone got confused as to what it was and was not. Hello, I am retired American male married 15 yrs to a Russian wife in US. The last 4 years living mostly in Russia but traveling to other countries. I felt the same way you did for 1st time visiting Russia very nervous about the way USA media makes Russia as an evil place but reality Russia is very safe, clean, modern cities, grocery stores loaded with food and Russians are very friendly. Also no Russian police has ever bother me because I am an American like the US media said they would. I 100% agree with you that being in another country like you being in China and I am in Russia is so much safer than America! It was like when I was a child in America and was a lot safer back then. Russian kids are hanging out with friends freely bike riding and walking around on there own and taking public transportation safely. Women in Russia dressing nicely can walk around without harassment from men unlike America.

Too many 007 movies badmouthing the ussr & russia. It was a time when the solviet was still around, I knew some young jewish immigrants highly trained in physics. I asked them about safety living in russia, esp around moscow.The polite answers were mostly like " It's not as bad as they say. The subways are very safe at night." Of course it was compared to nyc.

@@user-pg5rt7ju4f Funny thing is I was born in Brooklyn, New York but moved to NJ when I was 5 years old but only lived 45 minutes away from NY City visiting relative there. 43 years ago when I went to NY as a young man it was fun but still dirty and and i could see there was some crime. But I was there a few years ago now it has a lot of crime, drugs, very dirty and rats as big as cats. So far Russia is just the opposite and there is so much more freedom here vs US. People don't want to believe this but capitalism exist in Russia because there are a lot of self made rich people here that made there money honestly with hard work and a dream. It is very safe in Russia!! Russian people are very well educated and unlike some young Americans were asked on the street how many moons does the earth have? 1 person said 24 and another person said 13.

sadly sh00tings and knife crimes are so normalized in the US, some minority in the U$ are being sh0t every few weeks, and each it is very similar to the last, where KKK police felt threatened, open fire, public speeches, sing kum baya and nothing happens, I guess that's because Americans are so programmed to have very short memory, so they don't remember much. All they remember all crimes is ok, as long as you add "freedom and democracy" to all govt policies.

Since many viewers here are telling their stories in China, I think I may tell mine. I went to China the past February [2024]. and visited a small town about 30 minutes away by driving from the city of HangZhou. In a mall, we went into a shop, which I believe it is an artist studio, where many art products were displayed on shelves and a large Apple laptop stood on a desk, which I believe is the shop-owner/artist's working desk. Surprisingly, there was no one else in the shop, not the owner or the shop-assistant. My friends took some of the products from the shelves in their hands to discuss the products' aesthetic merits. We stayed there for at least 10 to 15 minutes, during which nobody else walked in. I asked my friends whether the shop-owners would worry about the products and the laptop being stolen. They stared at me (as if I were from another planet). They told me nobody would steal. Yes. When we left the shop and walked in the mall, I saw a bag and a jacket on a bench unattended. The two incidents on one day impressed me very much and that is why even now [June 2024] I still remember them well.

There are still thieves in China, but they are rare now. Children are taught from a young age that they should not take things that are not theirs. In March this year, my son and I found a camera lens on the ground while flying a kite in the park. We picked it up and waited there for two hours. Finally, the owner came and we gave it back to him. He said the lens was worth $800. My son and I were very happy to help others. This is a person's basic morality.

There is one for Chinese locals, basically committing a criminal case will affect your child and grandchild on their eligibility to work for the government. But this is more of a police record thing and police records exist in most countries, it's just a matter of how you use the record to fend off criminals😅 I also lived in Shenzhen and Hong Kong

lol because you are not chinese citizen. Yes they do have social credit as the west do. Here in Australia, the bank need to check criminal history, loan history, rental history, etc, then manually work out the social credit, but in China, they made it simpler to apply job, get loan, etc. I was in Shenzhen for 2 years. Once I crossed when light was red with my electric bike. The police stopped me and 4 other guys. One by one, they got fined by scanning their Citizenship card, then the police explained it's 12rmb and 2 credit deduction. When it was my turned, I showed the photo of my passport from phone and he scratched his head few times, then tell me to go on. LOL, the other 4 guys complained. Another time I went to see some new apartments with my friends. Once the agent knew I'm foreigner, they went back to manager to check the procedure as foreigner doesn't have credit social point etc. Also another experience, I made video for my son's homework where he need to explain awareness of taking care our eyes. I edited it a lot and make it extremely funny and educational. The teacher called me next day to get my permission to send that video to national level competition as it's really interactive. I sent updated video with school logo and won that competition. The price was drone toy, a certificate of excellent, and they asked my ID so they can give me the social point award. I don't have Chinese ID, so they exchange that with voucher to supermarket via Wechat scan. So yes, social credit exist in China and all around the world. China made the system simple and encouraging their people to contribute to society. In Australia, I tried to apply for funding for my son to get in Private school, on their form, they asked us to provide evidence if my family did volunteer jobs to increase our point to register . That's social credit point too, but media will never demonized it.

i rented a (very expensive) bike in Shanghai and asked the rental guy to sell me a lock. he told me that in China nobody stole bikes. i didn’t believe him at first but considering he had more to lose and there was literally no lock at his shop, i left with the bike. I biked around Shanghai for days without a lock (but also tried to never be too far away from my bike) and had zero problem. i couldn’t even imagine this in america!! In america, I use a heavy duty lock and still lost a seat.

As a Brit who has lived in china for 17 going on 18 years, I hope more folks like yourselves promote the truth about China. I grew up in the UK during the cold war and of course any mention of communism instilled a kind of fear in the population due to the threat of missile attacks. The communist government of China is not the same, so much good is accomplished for the people under the government here. In the 90's I moved to work in Silicon Valley and spent the bext 16 years there before moving to China. While America has a lot to offer as a country, I lived under the potential threat of gun violence, drug gang violence and large numbers of homeless in one of the richest countries in the world. Since moving to China I have never felt in anyway threatened, it''s safe to walk the streets in the early hours without any worries about muggings or safety for my wife. Hope you'll ba back soon.

West pat of China, especially Chendu, Yunnan province are probably good places to live. For myself, I like to live in one place for some time and move to another place for some time. China is a vast country with a lot of diversities, worthwhile to explore the differences.

When you talked about the “social credit”, as a Chinese who living in Australia, I’ve got asked about that for couples of times. When I first heard about it I was so confused what is that? For centuries, we are bullied and ripped off by the collective western countries, just because they are technologically advanced than us. After the reborn of China in 1949, we Chinese tried our best to rebuild our broken country. The first generation devoted themselves to the country, making it sovereign. The second generation devoted themselves to make the country prosperous, and the third generation try their best to make it stronger, both economically and militarily. We invade no one during these generations, and we shared our progress with the world. What we want is just a stable and fair international environment, so people all over the world could live better and better, not just the 'developed' countries. Once in Chengdu subway, I forgot my backpack when I got off the train, which had my ipad and money in it. But I realized they were lost after half an hour. I tried to call the subway company and the staff said that someone found a backpack and gave it to the subway lost and found office. I went to the subway station and the person there asked me what was in the backpack and confirmed that it was my backpack and gave it back to me. It was so lucky.

There is something very simple, but people who come to China often fail to understand it. It’s not that China banned Google and Facebook, but because they initially expressed their unwillingness to abide by Chinese laws, the Chinese government had no choice but to ban them. Apple and Microsoft have shown their willingness to abide by Chinese laws and can operate unimpeded in China.

True in a sense but Google actually made the first move. I was working in China and the company was using Google when Google pulled out of China. They were 70% of the Chinese search engine then and basically, the Google CEO said there should not be any government interference in internet and no government can ever access their data. He went ballistic with the Chinese authorities. They moved to HK and expect the China internet and e-commerce to collapse. Since I was working in a US company, it did created a lot of issues as we don't have choices and need to gain access to Google mails and have to use VPN or dial direct via Hong Kong. The next major search engine then was Yahoo ( almost 20% plus ). Ultimately, we have to use local search engines who were starting out as well as Google via VPN in our daily work. So we did contribute to Chinese internet development .... LOL after all and we want them to be able to bring their standard up to Google and the world standards. It went faster and better then we ever thought it would. When Google withdrew, the people then were quite upset with the Chinese government as they really like Google. The die hard even have a meme of GOOJIE ( brother Goo can't be used so Sister Goo will fight ) but Google sue those who use the GOOJIE word as it was too close to GOOGLE. These are actually die hard Google supporters. They then switch to local search engine and Google have no way to gain back market shares or trust even if they wanted to as it is too costly for them now.

My nephew left his wallet in the taxi and went to the police station where the police immediately checked the location, time and date and able to identify the taxi and through the taxi company contacted the taxi and got his wallet back the following day. The driver didnt even want to accept any compensation or reward. Patience and respect was the order of the day. Cheers China and the police. The cameras did wonders for safety.

One thing I couldn’t understand is that in western countries some people would have problem with surveillance cameras in public areas, because it violates privacy. Why is privacy needed in public areas? Don’t they know ‘private’ and ‘public’ are two completely opposite ideas? If you’re not up to no good, why are you so afraid of being seen? Plus, it’s not every camera a camera for security purposes or tracking people’s traces (for people who had criminal records or suspicious activity), there are also cams for traffic monitoring, speeding, weather monitoring and etc. So yea, that’s that.

I was having a conversation with my mum the other day about the fearmongering of China, especially here in Australia, where our government acts like its the 51st state of America, and we had a little argument because she didnt believe me that China has only one military base outside its country, whereas US has 750 in 80 countries, she believed China had bases everywhere to help attavk Australia one day...the fearmongering and zenophobia is quite strong in this land down under. As a Chinese, I am even more curious than you about what "social credit score" is... because I haven't heard of it for more than 30 years. Later, I thought, could it be the Sesame Credit function of Alipay? It will give you a score based on your consumption behavior. If the score is high (such as timely return and exchange of goods, timely repayment of loans, etc.), the points will be increased. People with high points can rent some things without deposit, such as power banks or bicycles...? It is the closest thing to "social credit score" that I can get. But it is a strange statement that if the score is too low, you will be shot. All Chinese people will laugh to death when they hear it.

I'm from Beijing, China and now I'm studying in Berlin. Before my first class in Germany beginned, I left my phone on the desk and went out of the classroom to the bathroom. After 2 minutes I came back and saw my professor(an Irish) at my desk. He looked at my seriously and reminded me to not leave my phone behind on the desk. At that time I was a bit nervous for it was my first class in a new country, and I caught an old and famous professor's attention just because of this silly(?) act. But I was also a little shocked by his advice, as I thought it's on campus...I sometimes left my computer for 4 hours in the cafeteria/canteen of Peking University, if it's not so busy and won't take up others' space at that time . Also in Starbucks/Costa, I can't see any problem of leaving my degital devices behind, and then go to the bathroom. I thought people in public are watching and how can it be thieves? I have to admit that this's what my education and experience taught me, a girl born in around 2000, Beijing. And now I realize that it's not because of people watching. It's because of the cameras, which I've hardly, ever noticed. And my Irish professor is so kind to remind me as situations are different here. Happy to see your videos! It's like magic that you're experiencing Chinese culture, and I'm also coming across German culture everyday and sometimes Irish style! I really enjoy living in Germany. I love German bread, Bratwurst, Sauerkraut....I'm also curious about Ireland, for example what does the Irish bread taste like? For when I said I love German bread, my professor said he also loves bread and makes them at home, but Irish! The best way to know sth. is to experience it in person! What I'm going to say at last is, welcome to visit my hometown, Beijing next time!

I have been living, working, 4 years in USA and 5 years in China. My feelings today are: terrified of coming back to USA, it's dangerous, no freedom there, opressive, anything could happen to you, be carefull, specially with police. China is a completely different world, there is morality, personal freedom, friendship, easy to talk with anyone, police will help you if you need too. I'm desperate for coming back to China, I will never go back to USA.

No… “the negative perception a lot of the world thinks”(1:12) about China is NOT the view of the vast majority of people in the Global South; which accounts for 87% of the world’s population. The people that have these negative perceptions are from the collective West and it’s vassal state allies (USA, Canada, EU, The UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, The Philippines, Pacific island nations, Israel), which is NOT representive of “the world”, as the West often thinks and says. Americans and many Europeans often don’t realise that the American (and to a lesser extend the UK) media’s global reach is massive and the largest in the world. The Americans run the largest propaganda machine in the world. This is a FACT, that can be fact checked. The Americans control a lot of the global Geo-political narrative; even if it’s skewed and full of misinformation. So it is not surprising that most people in the West have an anti-China, anti-CCP bias. Only from experiencing each country for ourselves, can we debunk these false narratives and flat out lies.

I had the same experience as yours, I got scammed in Vietnam, the Philippines & India, but I didn't encounter any scam in China, no single one!!! I am a foreigner living in China. the people here have never heard of social credit scores and they parked illegally all the time without fear of social credit scores. But I have never seen voilence or crimes committed here. I left my shopping bags in my e-bike to go for dinner for 1 hour without ability to see our bikes at all. some people even left their ignition keys still stuck in the bikes. It is incredibly safe in China. Otherwise how else could their courier items collection centers be DIY, you go through the shelfs of parcels and collect your own items and then check out yourselves. half the time there is nobody manning the shop. The worker sometimes left his keys and phone charging to go outisde for whatever reasons, this is frequent sight. There are also convienience shops that are totally unmanned, the customers pick up the goods, pay for it by scanning the QR code with the phone and leave. China must be the safest and most honest country in the world.

Westerners typically "stick-out" in Asia. No need to do that because you are not well-dressed. Here's a tip. Wait until you arrive, then budget some time to study how people of your age dress to look smart and blend at different places. (town centers vs a nature walk). OFF. Then shop first for the right stores (according to your budget). You will then be ready for the next, bigger step: learning higher Asian standards of behavior.

I've been living in Spain for 8 years and now back in Chongqing. Felt similar when u mentioned Spain. U two nailed it. Me as a guy from Hubei Province, Next time u might try Three Gorges Trip (From Chonqing to Yichang, or Viceversa), or go down by boat to Wuhan and other city on Yantse River. The scenary on the Yantse River is quite remarkable and unforgettable.
