Oh guys, the rain is relentless…. When you’re on a bike it gets everywhere…. I tried Tesco bags inside my boots once but the sweat was even worse then the rain, I know, gross, but bikers understand…. We are a tribe !

You shouldn’t press your starter for more than 10 seconds , if it doesn’t start rest the battery for a minute or two before attempting to start it . When the battery is almost finally knackered you won’t be able to even bump start the bike , as the voltage will be so low, that the fuel pump won’t even prime to send fuel to the injectors . You could do with a cheap pocket multimeter to check if the bikes electrics are sending a charge to the battery . A good battery on tick over should read about 13 - 13 •5 volts & about 14 • 14 •5 volts when engine is revved to around 5 ,000 rpm . If the voltage doesn’t increase , the rectifier/ voltage regulator is faulty or the stator coils in the generator are faulty ,or simply just dirty or corroded electrical contacts in the circuit . Partial dirty contacts alone can sap 10 per of the voltage . These new modern motorcycles tend to have smaller amp hour batteries ,than the old school bikes of similar size engines ,& they have their work more than cut out powering all the fuel injection systems ,sensors ,& front & rear lights ,which come on before the starter is even pressed . A poor battery can also put extra stress on the alternator & other components in the system ,causing premature failure & added expense to replace knackered parts .

Pebble juice 😂 Amazing to see you guys riding through Italy and Austria and then realising you've ridden around the entire planet to get there! Oh and the Alps and rain, really feel for you. I used to do loads of alpine mountaineering and remember one trip about twenty years ago it just rained constantly for 7 days... We were stuck in our tents, I had food poisoning... I had this huge bottle of camping gas and just ran it steadily in my tent to keep warm... Was soooo miserable 😅! I tried to book a hotel.. they were all full too! Now that sauna would have been sooo awesome! Here's to a less rainy continual journey 🎉 Dale

Rain has a way of finding all the leaks in your gear. I'm glad you made to a comfortable spot to stay for the night though. It's hard to imagine, but you're almost home! What a trip it's been!

After all of the years of working and maintaining my vehicles it was freezing cold and snowy and I made a similar rookie mistake, I had been using my son's truck and had to jump start it every time to get it started finally I bought a new battery and installed it and it still wouldn't start without jumping it. It turned out to be a bad battery terminal the whole time 🥴

What a sad weather! I remember when we were riding for 4-5 days constantly in rain in the Alps.. that was annoying! And I need to hand over the message from my husband: "please buy a new battery!!!" :D

How nice ;) I was riding in that same area last week. Torbole at Lake Garda was one of my stops. I had rented an appartment in Moena in Fassa Valley and doing day tours for a week. While you mention it: Stelvio is closed until June I think, but it might open even later due to the massive amounts of snow. Grödner Joch is open, but only in the mornings until 1pm due to risk of avalanches. I traveled back to Germany on April 21st, going over Sellajoch in the morning. -4°C, but sunny, and only a little snow and ice on the summit. Quite doable actually. But lots and lots of rain crossing from Austria into Germany. It was all fine until Innsbruck, but after that, conditions got worse and worse by the minute.

When I was a child my family used to travel in Europe a lot. We always camped. The first time I ever stayed in a building on holiday was one year when we were returning from Southern Italy and crossing into Austria. The weather was so wet and miserable my parents stopped at a Zimmer Frei and booked us in. It was the first time I had ever used a duvet/continental quilt on a bed. It is amazing but I can still remember what we ate that evening. We drove out to a quiet spot and rigged up a tarp where we cooked corned beef hash!

My longest ride in the wet was from Adelaide to south eastern Victoria, Australia back in 1984. Bucketted down all the way. Being Easter there was no accomodation. Back then wet weather gear consisted of waxed cotton jacket and pants and gloves that soaked up water better than a sponge (not much has changed in 40 years in that regard). No heated grips, or heated anything, for that matter. More recently we did a run up to north eastern Victoria (in our fabled "high country"). Again, we got a bucketting. My phone being in an inside pocket got wet and failed. Expensive replacement. That was only 5hrs (the Adelaide to home ride was 11 hours). And to top it off, where we stayed, a snow skiing town, the dry rooms weren't working, so our gear was wet or damp all weekend. I often wondered how the ski crowd went with this place.

while traveling on my Goldwing, pulling my trailer. I got into some nasty heavy rains, for hours. For the life of me, I could not find a place to stay for the night. I started riding at 6am and stopped at about 10 pm. I found myself, making a makeshift tarp tent, under a staircase, of a hotel, rear, exit staircase., like you cold and wet, (Thank God) my Goldwing had a reverse. I was able to back the bike and trailer, under the staircase landing, and tie the plastic tarp, between the case rails and the top of my bike. I peeled off my wet clothes. dried off, got into dry warm clothes, and slept under the tarp. Its why I've given up the big touring bikes, and buying a small either, Kawasaki KLR 650 or a GS 850 BMW., AS, I'm taking a trip with 3 other friends, up the east coast of the USA, to Newfoundland Canada, in mid-June. (All backroads & I hope, all camping)

9.30am..... Yikes! Thats an early checkout indeed! What a beautiful but wet ride, its not fun when it rains like that. I ride daily, even when it snows, but the fun is gone when your wet and cold, just becomes a necessity to get from A to B to Z. Glad you got your sauna in the end, that'll warm up the bones for sure! Those darn battery clamps! Its possible the charge hasnt been going in the battery due to loose connections, get them tight and a bit of waterproof cream/spray/gel (Vaseline works!) and they should be fine as long as the battery is good. Fingers crossed 🤞 the starting issue is resolved! Austria, another beautiful country. Yes those mountain passes are dangerous with the rain, black ice and snow. Short story.... I was on my way home 1 night, coming up from Bristol. I was on the M6 services Nthbound just passed Walsall fueling up and these 2 Motorbikes came in to fuel up themselves. They both were wearing full leathers, perforated for heat loss. I got chatting to them as Bikers do. They had set out that morning at 6am, planned to go for a pizza at a place about 50 miles away. They ended up in Italy..... and were on thier way home. Problem was it had dropped to 10C and thry both had perforated leathers on, very cold! They called in to get more magazines to stuff inside thier leathers!! They also kept swapping bikes as only 1 of them had heated grips. They hadnt thoight how cold it would get for thier return trip. I had a spare jacket in a pannier and gave it to them to use, they got home safe but still chilled! Take care @LaviandOllie Stay safe!

HaHa! Loving Lavi's rain gear! Go Bumblebee! I weren't positive about it starting that morning! I'd never heard of Lake Garda before but wow! It looks awesome! I love the Italian architecture that you are riding past in these Italian videos. As annoying as the rain is, the atmosphere created by the mist in the mountains can be quite stunning as well. Yeah, not a great day for wild camping! 🤣 I can relate to those days of being soaking wet and cold. Good fun hey! It reminds me of a few days of riding I had in Tasmania absolutely soaked to the bone and freezing cold. And I had good rain gear, not bin bags! 🤣🤣🤣

Good choice not to camp, it is sooooo hard to travel and camp when everything is wet. You are doing so well after all this time and all your amazing experiences, you just keep smiling - for the camera anyway - and love the shot of you cozied up in a warm bed. Its really hard riding for long periods in the rain and especially if you are getting wetter and wetter. But hey - you are nearly home and only a few mountain passes to go!!! Hope the weather improves for you.

Yeah experienced a day like that and didnt have waterproofs nor gps (everything got wet). That sauna must have been amazing! I got into a hot bath was heaven. Lavi almost home😉

In the old days i used to ride in cold weather,.You did pretty good with those garbage bags but if you had used newspapers under that layer of garbage bags you would have been a lot better. From now on think about using newspapers for protection that will probably suprise you. I know it was easier in my time to find a lot of newspapers i really don't know how it is right now. Yes back when I was riding I used to use newspaper also it really helped with the cold but I don't believe it would do any good once it got wet. I never did do this but some people said wearing pantyhose under your pants also helps with the cold 🤗

100% agree with this. One around the chest, and around the tops your legs. Taped on around ya legs. Three or four layers thick. Been there, and done this many times. Works great. 👍

You can still dress against the cold, but against the rain... after a while the water still finds its way. I hope you had better weather in the coming days. Fortunately, you found a nice place to spend the night. Problems with the battery persisted, why didn't you replace it ?

Wow, miserable rain and battery problems. But in my experience, any Auto Zone or similar shop has mower batteries that fit motorcycles. There really is no reason to continue with a bad battery, for less than 100 euros or dollars you can be back in business. Also, I would not travel without a battery-charged jumper that has enough power to start a truck.

@@LaviandOllie For the riding you're doing. you would be surprised on how fast; you will lose air in your tires. It, may not be much, but a pound or two a day, will affect you, in change of weather. (Remember those tires, are your lifeline). Now I drive a tractor trailer. EVERYDAY. I check, my fluids, hoses, tires, brake lines, air lines, lights. When I get home, I do the same to my cars. Low air pressure on your tires means, lower milage in your tank..

Ciao ragazzi, state compiendo un impresa fantastica, complimenti. Ho anche io una V-Strom ti vorrei suggerire se posso, di non ruotare l'acceleratore quando avvii il motore. Un solo colpo sul pulsante e si avvia. Con il ride by wire non devi ruotare la manopola del gas. 👍🏻💪🏻👋🏻
