20 years ago I was talking to a friend about how an album of Nilsson covers could be a lot of fun. He didn't like the idea because "The songs are special because Nilsson sings them." Not even the argument that Nilsson originally wrote songs for other people for dissuade him from the notion that a cover album was a good idea. So bravo and cheers.

I'd imagine it's very rare that an artist covering a song is trying to top it. More than likely they're covering it because they love the original and enjoy playing it, even while putting their own touches on it.
