I donated for this incentive because I wanted to see how a pacifist run would work in a game with mandatory kills and no kind of non-lethal option or kill count based mechanic. The answer I got: It doesn't work at all.
@bradhozuki89038 жыл бұрын
People donated over $5,000 for a pacifist run and he not only DIDN'T do a pacifist run, he made jokes about not doing it and intentionally killed enemies because he wanted to. He essentially ignored the entire donation incentive on purpose. Absolutely the worst run of GDQ. What a disgrace.

Many of the enemies he killed were mandatory for quests so he could progress through the game. Those were the ones that "didn't count". Plus he donated a dollar for each unnecessary kill he made, so yeah I'll clap for that.

The incentive might've gotten spit on and it sucks that it may discourage donors, people might say he only donated $100 in apology and that's 1/50th of the incentive, but keep in mind people, the kid's 19 years old and is a college student. Financial situations exist, and at his age it's respectable for him to own up the way he is and put up money, regardless of how much, as a way of saying sorry. Muscle memory, nerves, and getting distracted with commentary are all a thing here. Nerves and stress would hit people even harder in the future seeing how hard this teenage kid is being grilled over this run, which by the way still ended up pretty solid and overall informative.
@adawfaf38428 жыл бұрын
Then he shouldn't be running at all. And no, $100 compared to $5k is just insulting.
@legendoflinq50588 жыл бұрын
You say it's his way of saying sorry, but at 32:35, he clearly states he's going to intentionally go against the donation incentive to make things easier on himself. He wasn't even _trying_ to comply with the donation incentive. That's why people are mad-- not because he messed up or was nervous, but because he actively ignored what people wanted and donated to charity for. People are really lenient when it comes to messing up alone--look at Henneko's run of Prince of Persia at SGDQ 2015. I think he was the same age, and stuck with it through the whole run despite so much going wrong.

@Irunwithscissors6968 жыл бұрын
He offered to do a pacifist run where he only killed enemies that were needed to progress the game for $5000. He forgot and kept accidentally killing enemies for the first half of the run so it is a little hard to make up for it without restarting and delaying the stream.
@SlovakMountainMan8 жыл бұрын
I think commentating, speedrunning, and trying to remember to do a Pacifist run may have been too much for him. At least he apologized and donated, the money's still going towards charity so I don't think it's to bad.

+Slovak Mountain Man yeah it is not too bad, it's just a fair number of people feel ripped off because some people payed upwards of $500 to meet the goal in time, hopefully it does not discourage doners not to donate because this incentive did not happen.

www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/4rh7y2/about_this_pacifist_ty_the_tasmanian_tiger_run/ One of the coordinators of the GDQ replied in this thread and it looks like he is most likely not gonna be invited to come back for a very long time, if at all, after this. It was really bad how he just completely disregarded not only the incentive (which let's be honest, he either didn't prepare for at all or there is no way to do it pacifist which is unacceptable since people literally donated around $400-500 specifically to see the incentive) but also was completely a dick to the dev who donated and wished him good luck.

I erased most of the details out of my head as well, but I do know that he said "And here's another example of excellent programming" sarcastically after it. It's another to be a dick to the dev that's wishing you good luck and act like you didn't hear the donation despite hearing nearly every other donation read

I'm guessing that people haven't actually *done* a speedrun in front of 150,000 odd people, have they? No, I haven't either, but you gotta imagine how nerve wracking it must be to speedrun efficiently, provide interesting commentary and meet the donation incentive. It sucks that he didn't, and I get that. But for fucks sake, this is for charity. Lay off the guy, will you? It takes a lot of dedication to speedrun a game, and it's clear that he tried his best.
@LadyZoe8 жыл бұрын
"He forgot the incentive, its stressful to stream infront of 100k people" Isnt an acceptable excuse because 99% of all the other speedrunners there are experiencing that same level of tension and still didn't forget their incentives. Not only that, the blatant crapping-on of the devs after they were kind enough to donate is enough to have at least a little distaste for this guy. I understand in the end its all for charity, but a level of professionalism would be nice regardless. This is a sponsored and well-watched marathon. Its not someone's personal stream. :v
@slashess698 жыл бұрын
+ladyz0e yea but most other runners didn't get incentives for things that fundamentally change the way they have practiced the speed run.
@LadyZoe8 жыл бұрын
I dont exactly know how incentives are placed but it is my assumption that the streamer may present an incentive for a run. I dont think the GDQ team places these sort of limitations on streamers that apply for GDQ marathons without them knowing. If this is the case, then the streamer should have the foresight to practice for a pacifist run dont you think? It seems to me he either assumed it wouldnt be met or was planning to troll anyways. :\ But it isnt just that. He didnt appear to "forget" durng the stream. He laughed it off and acted trollish about it. Makes me think he was never going to do it. Hence why the dollar donation thing at the beginning
@slashess698 жыл бұрын
The runners for each game are in constant Flux up until the event really. Dunno how long he knew he might be going for pacifist, but an hour before it started I was convinced it wasn't gonna be met. They were down 2k at fucking 2 am. It was reached literally as he started.
@LadyZoe8 жыл бұрын
I don't know, friend. If I know theres a possibility of me doing something infront of people, I plan. (and again I really don't think he was going to do it either way.) This isn't the only argument I am hanging on for not being a fan of his run. All in all I just wish it was handled better by the streamer. We aren't all strategists in how we handle situations of course. But I just dont think it was taken seriously. At all. In the end the charity is the most important thing.

I get where people are going with the "They paid $5000 so he should have been a pacafist" but cut him some fucking slack, the donation incentive was met in less than 10 minutes of the run starting, AND if you are not familiar, Pacafist is not a real category, so he probably has done very little to account for it, Also, if you look at this run besides the killing enemies, this run was pretty good in terms of movement and displaying the runs tricks, take what you are given

Last time I checked you donate to a charity to you know...help people less fortunate than you, not to watch someone not kill enemies. Anyone that's mad about "wasting" their money on this donation incentive needs to rethink what the real purpose of this event is in the first place. It was a good run, and it was for a good cause, period.
@cheerfulgestalt32827 жыл бұрын
A good chuck of everything you said is factually incorrect. People paid for the pacifist run, donating it for that run explicitly, and it was understood that it would be done if they reached that incentive. If a charity lies to its patrons, it looks bad on the charity, and it cheapens their credibility and makes people less likely to donate in the future. This was a not a good run, it was sloppy, full of mistakes, and a completely ignored incentive which he picked, asked people to donate money for, and then straight up invalidated not even 5 minutes into the run. That is what is called a "bad run." Lastly, just because the money went to charity doesn't make this ok, as I said earlier, if a charity lies, it won't get as much money in the future from its patrons. What Kythol did hurt the charity, and the people it was supposed to help, that's what is truly unforgivable and vile about this. Instead of picking and doing a proper incentive, he just took people's money and said "it's for charity so deal with me not actually doing what you gave us money to do" which is scummy no matter how you look at it.
