Step by step instructions for Bob Clouser's Clouser Crayfish. While this fly was designed for smallmouth bass, it is very effective for trout, carp and other species too.

Thanks Martyn, I've never seen this on video with a good explanation, only in print. I've tried to tie a few simple crawfish patterns when I first started to tie a long time ago, including Clouser's, but I didn't have the furry foam and didn't realize it wasn't a floating foam. I think I used thick chenille for the back, and probably doubled it to make it wider. Anyway I think Clouser's is the best looking, I wasn't satisfied with the others. If I tied them today I think they would look much better because I know more now. Have you ever tied his swimming nymph? That's another great pattern that doesn't get a lot of coverage. Thanks again.

Cool! I've often wondered how to tie this pattern. I like the use of pheasant tail and hen mallard for the mouth parts and claws. I'd do some up tonight but I don't have any fuzzy foam. I wonder if I could I sub out the foam with some synthetic dubbing like acrylic yarn? Excellent tutorial. Thanks.

Clouser says that on smaller sizes he uses feather fibres for the back. I guess you could use felt (daiso) too, furry foam isn't actually foam so you could have a range of subs really. If you get furry foam, make sure it's not the adhesive backed stuff. Cheers

Cheers Martyn. After I posted it hit me... why not a strip of 2mm craft felt. I've got some in a few colors and it has a similar texture to the furry foam when brushed out. The feather fibers also appeal to me. I could prolly get away forming a shell back with some long mottled turkey tail fibers. Thanks so much, I needed something to get my brain kick started.

Thanks Joe, the only other video I've seen is on in the riffle and it's not quite true to the pattern. You should wind some up now you can go with furry foam. I'll be doing the swimming nymph and others as I go along, I'm planning to do all the flies in his book eventually. Tight lines, Martyn

Martyn White Flicking Feathers Great! I noticed another simple crawfish pattern of yours but I had to save it to watch later. I'll be commenting on that too. Looking forward to see you tie the rest of his patterns. I see you have his floating minnow on file too. I love Clouser. And Kreh. You're not too bad yourself! Thanks!
