This is the second time I’ve watched this video. I have tied grosses of this pattern, as a semiprofessional. This method beat the (insert expletive) out of any way I ever tried tying it. As an American I have a lot to cope with and be of which to be thankful. One is that I can watch Mr. McPhails videos , witness a master at work, do some armchair tying and learn something new every viewing.

The Hare's Ear may be my favorite fly. You can sink them down to the feeding zones or grease them and fish them like an emerger in the film. Some of my best fish have been taken on this fly, I never leave home without them. I love your work Davie, thanks for videos. Everyone be well!

I have always been intimidated about using fur for dubbing, but thank you Mr. McPhail, you shown that it's easier than I thought. Now I can broaden my tying.

Davie - watched a number of these G.R.H.E. nymph tying vids (and variations). My first was a disaster. Your technique is so much easier to tie (I'm a beginner) - and what elegant flies you do tie. Thanks for sharing your talent. Beginners really appreciate it :-)

I find that too many times I forget about building a head and am too anxious to simply whip finish. It's an important part of the fly and certainly adds to it. Thanks Davie!

Thanks Davie! This is a great video of a classic fly. Instead of clipping the excess of tail, I keep the pheasant tail long, tie over it and I just fold it back over twice.

Think this is the first time I watched one of your videos. Just starting to fly fish this year, I tie my own flies. This one always looked a bit complex to tie until I watches your video. Thank you for making this, I will be sure to follow it when I tie later.

Great video; Davie your proportioning skills are better than a surgeon. This is the only fly that I can take and know I will catch a fish. Dead drifting this fly all day and it works great.

Great fly , it's been around for along time for a reason . It works everywhere ! I tie this pattern a lot in 18 to 12 in multiple colors works especially good on my home river the Madison where you have a lot of caddis and stoneflies . My wife always freaks out when I have hare masks lying around on my bench, something about them that make her a nervous :-) but she likes the way they work 🎣

Great looking nymph mate. The big ole browns and bows would love that one. I always use some uv resin on the wing case. Does that matter or help protect the fly some what. Thanks for sharing with us all again. Best Regards, Ken
@handcannon1388
@handcannon1388 5 жыл бұрын
I find that a resin coating improves the durability of wing cases; especially helping to resist splitting and slipping over to the sides of the thorax, leaving the back bear. A strip of opal mirage tinsel in the middle of the case looks really neat, too, and works well for me. It is also easy to put a hot-colored head on these by using white thread and coloring it with a fluorescent sharpie or even a highlighter before forming the head and whip finishing. Test the fluorescence first by coloring a section of thread and shining your UV curing light on it; some markers do a much better job than others. Chartreuse and olive seem to be a dynamite color combo for me; though I mostly use my trout flies on panfish.

@dahutful 5 жыл бұрын
Davie, while watching this, I saw a couple places where the rotary function of your vice would be useful. Dubbing the thread, for example, is facilitated if you just turn the hook point 90 degrees out of the way. Please don’t take this the wrong way; I have nothing but respect for you. But it made me wonder. It looks like such a lovely vise You have there, by the way.....

Hi Dave, I'm struggling to get materials as can't visit shops during the shutdown. As a consequence I'm spending too much money online buying materials that are either poor quality or the wrong size. Can you tell me the make and width of the gold tinsel you use in this excellent video?

How do you retrieve these nymphs Davie please?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Trevor, It can be retrieved in many ways as this fly does give the impression of many insects both on rivers and lochs so the more ways you can present and retrieve the fly the more chance you will have of catching..Allowing it to drift naturally when fishing on the river does well but it can easily be twitched back or even allowed to swing round with the current as sometimes the fish do like this..On the lochs again you could do much the same using it with other flies to help you control the depth and the speed you fish it..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie.

How do you fish with this fly?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 жыл бұрын
Hi fabian nacuchi, I like to fish this nymph with another fly casting it upstream allowing the nymphs to drift drag free keeping an eye out for any disturbance below or near the fly or a pause in the cast which would hopefully be a fish having a go..Once the flies get in line with me I will also bring the tip of the rob towards and below me causing the nymphs to rise and also giving them an odd twitch which can induce a take, this method has caught me many fish over the years.. All the very best Davie..
