Davie,. With all the BS going on with the world today, watching your videos is the only way I know how to "meditate" and be able to calm myself. I hope you realize your doing so much more than just tying flies. Your voice and demeanor says it all! Thank you for what you do! I hope all is well there in your end of the world! Stay being you. 😎

This is my first comment ever. I have been tying flies for 20+ years, and you make tying such a beautiful fly look so effortless. I can only hope by watching your techniques over and over, that someday I'll be able to come close to making any fly I tie, look 1/2 as good as yours do! Thanks for the great videos.

I like how you get wings to lay in the right place. I have been trying to do them that way. Still not as easy as you make it look but I'm working on it. Love your videos.

it is fantastic to watch a fly like this being tied so well, for me Spey's are the best looking style of salmon fly of all the existing styles. learning to tie the in the bronze mallard wings on these flies was for me the most difficult thing i have encountered when tying, though with watching this video over along with much practice i managed to get it sussed and tie them in now no trouble at all. What do you think is the best heron sub at moment i have used BEP lately and liked it a lot.

Hi Davie, A cracking fly! I have admired these Spey type flies, but have never seen anyone fish them. My local river has lots of slow water and sluggish pools. My favorite fly for this water is a Bann Special Shrimp, which has done exceedingly well for me. Thing is, I notice many of the properties I like in the Bann Special in the Spey flies - Mobility! Do you ever fish these for Atlantic salmon? They look fragile - how do they stand up to spey casting - do the wings come apart? BW David

Davie I think is a silly question, I'm think I'll get over to the West coast this summer and fish for steel head your salmon patterns can be used for the steel head also can't they ATB

What type of wax are you using? My wax is on a stick (like a gluestick or lipstick). But your solution seems more handy while you are working with the flies.

I notice in your fly and many i see in shops the heads are bright, shiny and hard. I finish mine with head cement and they never quite look like that. I have also tried clear nail polish. What do you finish your heads with?

Davie, was wondering if you have any experience with Intruder style Spey flies. What do you think of them? Patrick
@DavieMcPhail10 жыл бұрын
Hi Patrick, I have tyed a few Intruders over the years in different styles and the spey ones are the most popular...They work really well but the materials can be expensive and hard to find for many tyers to find... All the very best Davie
@patrickhiggins376410 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your prompt and courteous response. I'm almost done transcribing your videos to get the materials lists for each fly as well as what tips you want to demonstrate in each video. I've been tying for a few years and have acquired a lot of the materials needed to do the job. I've tied thousands of flies and what I really have come to appreciate in watching your videos is your discipline. It is your mastery of technique that allows you to be creative. I've tied most everything except classic Salmon flies and have come to edge and decided to take the leap. Classic Salmon Flies here I come. Thanks again Patrick

Hi Mr.McPhail is there a trick to put the bronze malard. ?? I have tryed about 30 times ( 2 pkg of bronze feathers) and still no success ?? any small info you can help me with here? you make it look so easy but not the case here ! 😂😂. need help please thank you.
@DavieMcPhail3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, I know the feeling as when I was learning and still learning to use the bronze mallard I must have wasted many a feather but it's something you need to just keep at it. Although one of the most important things is to tye the wing on an even layer of thread with no lumps or bumps and it should sit nicely and less sometimes is best.. All the very best Davie

Hello again Davie, I ordered and receive the Veniard wax, thanks very much for the link and the info. I am curious though, you seem to only have a small amount and it stays on the side of your finger. How would I be able to copy this? It looks very efficient and effective. Thanks again for you assistance. Bruce
@DavieMcPhail9 жыл бұрын
Hi+BBFlyTyer, What I like to do is to hold the wax under the warm water tap until it starts to go soft then I'll break off a small piece which when formed will be the size of a small button..I'll then work it between my fingers until it becomes tacky as this will allow you to stick it to the side of your finger ready to be used when needed. I hope this helps you... All the very best Davie

Davie, I recently read a post in which you said, "Unfortunately, I do not sell flies." If you don't sell them, what do you do with all the flies you tie? Do you use them all yourself? Of course I realize this is absolutely none of my business so I won't be upset if you never answer it. I am just curious! All the best, Sean I would certainly love to collect some of your flies!
