The Endrick Water or River Endrick is a river which flows into the eastern end of Loch Lomond, Scotland.
Its drainage basin covers a large part of the west of Stirling District. The Burnfoot Burn rising on the southern slopes of the Gargunnock Hills and the Backside Burn rising on the eastern slopes of the Fintry Hills combine to form the Endrick Water which flows south before turning sharply westwards at the foot of the western dam of Carron Valley Reservoir. The river flows through Strathendrick, the village of Fintry and past Balfron and Drymen before entering Loch Lomond.The Endrick Spider is a simple pattern but is a very popular fly with fishers...

Soft hackled flies are becoming my favorite way to fish. I too, fish a Hare's Ear and Partridge spider, and it has been fantastic. I can't wait to add this to my box. I have a note book started on all the soft hackle flies I come across and their dressings so I can tie more of them. Thank you for showing that technique on tying in the wire because it will save me time and thread not going back up the shank and then back down again tying in the wire. Why I never figured that out awhile back is anyone's guess. Thank you Davie.

Soft hackles work when nothing else will. Met Sylvester N. years ago as I was leaving an expo and he was struggling to open the door with 2 suitcases in hand. I recognized him, offered to carry them as he checked in and was rewarded with a front row seat for about a half hour.

Hello, it is said that simplicity is often preferable to complexity. This model perfectly illustrates this fact. A simple fly, imitating we do not really know what but whose design means that it must "live" very well in the water and may tempt a fish more than anyone else. I am quite a supporter of this type of fly, whether wet fly or dry fly, in the latter case just fishing in the film. Thank you for letting us know about this assembly which is accessible to all. All the best. Y Sultan

Hi Davie, I was put onto this fly many years ago by Peter McKenzie Philps, its been a great fish catcher over the years , I tie mine with orange thread, it seems to lift it a little.

This has become my confidence sub surface fly Davie. It catches brownies, sea trout and winter grayling on the rivers and rainbows on stillwaters. Just by using different hook sizes, adding a tad of lead/copper or changing the thread colour its multi functional & would be my ‘one only’ fly now if I had to choose. Thanks very much for sharing it.

I always just called these soft hackle pheasant tails, although some turns of peacock for the thorax is probably more accurate for that pattern. Either way I've come to just tie these up in the smaller sizes instead, the fish certainly don't mind that it doesn't have peacock on it! Thanks Davie

Gees I wish I could see the fly while tying them small flies. You do such awesome work. How can you see to tie something 18 to 22? My fingers are so fat couldn't see the hook trying to hold fibers for a tail, and where I am actually holding them at. Do use a magnifying lamp ever? I am in complete envy of you about the vise. The Law is such a fantastic vise.

Hi Davie. Fantastic looking fly and definitely caught my eye. I’ve seen a very similar fly by Yvon Chouinard where he ties in a peacock thorax to make the partridge hackle ‘pulse’. Are there any points for or against the addition of the thorax in your opinion please?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, Adding peacock or even dubbing will help hold the fibres open so I would certainly tye a few like this though it would also be worth tying some just like they are in the video as it does catch well..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie

Thats a beuty. This is a wet fly, yes? What do you mean when you say that the hackle gives the impression of the wing and legs? What insect or "pupa" have wings when they´re living under the surface? Or is it supposed to reprecent a drowned insect? I've been wondering about this for years :)
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Xittin Anas, Yes it is a wet fly and the main reason for saying that hackle will give the impression of a wing is due to the length of the fibres on the hackle and with the extra turns I used, if it had been shorter and sparser then it would be more like legs..It would represent both caddis and the larger mayfly like a march brown..I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie

Davie,can you tell me the purpose/use of the “up turned”eye as apposed to the “down turned” eye on a hook? There’s a flat eye as well. Is it tyre’s preference or is there a reason for the design?
@vttony
@vttony 3 жыл бұрын
Your thoughts, please. I've tied soft hackles with/without tails; spiky/smooth bodies; 1/2/3 turns of hackle and they all seem to work. What are the fish keying into? Or, is it just the importance of a buggy-looking fly?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, When I look at a small wet/soft hackle fly in the water it forms a lovely teardrop shape which gives a great impression of a small nymph and with the soft hackles also give the the movement that triggers the fish to take so that's why they are as popular now as they were when first tyed over 150 plus years ago.. All the very best Davie
