There are plenty of knots in the devil's story. Or any story that features the devil. Americans like to believe they can beat the devil himself. Satan's just another stepping stone in the manifest destiny of the United States' expansion to the heavens. Ol' Scratch is a common feature in the folklore of the United States. Usually, he's beaten handily by a faithful fellow or a legal expert, but sometimes he gets the boot from two drunken cowboys.
Gail I. Gardner perhaps penned the best account of the Devil in Southwestern poetry. It, without Gardner's blessing, would become a cornerstone of "Cowboy music". The poem "Sierry Petes" has a tumultuous copyright history. One that Gail Gardner almost came to blows over. So how did such an Arizona poem become a song covered by every kind of cowboy?

"Pseudiom, why did you pronounce depo as 'dee-pot'?" I originally thought the "Depot House" was actually pronounced different as the name of the establishment (some people do sing it is as dee-pot, I believe). But, now, I think it is just Depot house. Gail Gardner's rendition uses "Dee-poh" so go with that.

Can I gave a humble example from this pampas? There was a gaucho called Santos Vega, he was a unbeatable payador (musical fights with guitars), till one day he encountered another payador called Juan Sin Ropa (Clothless John), and they started a musical duel, the loser would hang up the guitar, both played with gusto and fiercely, but this an Argenine tale, Santos Vega ended up losing. Some say Juan Sin Ropa was the Devil, but also the Progress and Time, and you can't win against Time.

I have the George phippen prints you showed tying knots in the devels tail and ghost riders.also I found a print of Gail Gardner print with a couple of photos and the poem. I even was fortunate to meet Gail Stieger,Gardners grandson

Yes, this is correct. It was still the Aviation Section of the U.S. Signal Corps, but most people would have not understood that was basically the forerunner to the modern US Air force. Most biographies of Gardner's time in the armed forces simply refer to it as the "Air Force" so I went with that. It is not technically correct though.
