There are plenty of knots in the devil's story. Or any story that features the devil. Americans like to believe they can beat the devil himself. Satan's just another stepping stone in the manifest destiny of the United States' expansion to the heavens. Ol' Scratch is a common feature in the folklore of the United States. Usually, he's beaten handily by a faithful fellow or a legal expert, but sometimes he gets the boot from two drunken cowboys.
Gail I. Gardner perhaps penned the best account of the Devil in Southwestern poetry. It, without Gardner's blessing, would become a cornerstone of "Cowboy music". The poem "Sierry Petes" has a tumultuous copyright history. One that Gail Gardner almost came to blows over. So how did such an Arizona poem become a song covered by every kind of cowboy?
