The Clouser Deep Minnow needs no (or very little) introduction. Next to the Woolly Bugger it is one of the most popular modern flies. There are a great number of videos floating around the internet on tying the Clouser minnow including a few of Bob Clouser himself tying his iconic pattern. This video covers the method he outlined in his book "Clouser Flies". There are a number of points in tying the fly that he mentioned in the book that are often overlooked. Not that this is the only "right" way to tie the fly but many people are not aware of the method he has developed. Going with the concept that "knowledge is power" a little more knowledge can't hurt. --Enjoy

You are so clear in your instructions and the how AND why! IMHO, you are the best on YT! One question - you normally flatten the barb but did not on this one. Why? Associated question - why do manufacturers of the hooks still barb the hook when most fly tieing videos always flatten it?

Thank you for the feedback and kind words. I am glad to know you like the video and find them helpful. I did mash down the barb on the hook at 3:20. It was quick and easy to overlook. I flatten the barbs on the flies I tie for myself, it is just my preference. However, many people expect the barbs to be on the hooks and it cost the manufacturing companies more money to produce barbless hooks than it does barbed hooks. Therefore, barbless hooks tend to cost more and most people will just buy the barbed hook, which is cheaper, and smash the barb down. Kind of seems backwards but that's how the industry works. Good question though, I have an old article I wrote about 10 years ago on barbless hooks vs barbed hooks. I will see if I can resurrect it and freshen it up this winter. Merry Christmas. - Ian Anderson
