The Gill Getter is pattern that has been around for many years and for good reason. It is a simply fly to tie, simple in how it is fished and simply catches fish. There is lots of room for experimentation in this fly and is definitely one you should experiment with and maybe make it even better! - Enjoy

I live in Northern Alabama. Bluegills and bass are everywhere there is water. This is a great looking bug. Thanks for sharing!

James, I am in central Indiana, Bass and Panfish ARE king around here. The Gill Getter is a wonderful pattern. Not only fun to tie but loads of fun to fish. A lazy summer evening spent watching the sun go down catching panfish is a great day indeed. Glad you like the video. - Ian Anderson

Glad you like the video. I have found this to be productive fly almost year 'round. During the cold winter months I change up the chartreuse chenille to a black or dark brown and it still produces (if it's not too cold to get out on the water). Ian Anderson

Nice and quick, just the way I like them. Going to try some with variegated and wooly bugger chenille and barred rubber legs. Oh well, looks like I'm starting another fly box.

Glad you like the fly and the video. Change up the color of the body chenille so you have various colors for different fishing conditions. Also, a friend of mine replaces the body chenille with Sparkle Chenille, in a Copper color, and swears by it. You can also change up the colors of the legs to have even more fun. Thank you so much for putting this video up! I think this is a great fly to use to start getting my 11 year old daughter into fly fishing gills here in Southeastern Michigan. I'm hoping to get her into tying too and this does look like a fun fly to make and I know she'll be so proud to make a really nice one and actually catch some fish on a fly she made herself! Steve, thank you for the comment and the compliments. I have a friend who ties the Gill Getter with a sparkle chenille for the body and it is one of his top ten flies. If your daughter starts tying them she might like a little flash and sparkle in the fly. It might entice her to the vise as it does the fish to the hook. Also, take a look at the Rubber Spider video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mplgma18ptvbqok.html) for a great panfish fly as well as a great starter fly. I taught beginning fly tying classes at a local shop for 13 years and the Rubber Spider was the first fly everyone tied. Plus, my daughters used to love to tie the Rubber Spider and use sharpies to put eyes on them and put stripes on the legs. It didn't hurt the productivity of the fly either. Southeast Michigan will be a great place to fish either of these flies. - Ian Anderson

Thanks for the post.Could you please tell me what vise you are using.I like the fact that it is very solid when tying.Lots of room.Look forward to the next one.

You are welcome, thank you for the feedback on the Gill Getter. The vise in that video is the Renzetti Presentation 4000. It is a very solid vise with a nice heavy base. One of my favorites vises to tie with. - Ian Anderson

You are welcome. Generally it does not ride hook point up. I suppose if enough weight was added it might but what is normally used is not enough to flip it over. - Ian Anderson
