Asteriskstrong tested positive multiple times, but UCI covered it up. If you read Tyler Hamilton's book, his story is the main bulk of it with corroborating information as a footnote. When talking about 1999, testers in 2005 went back and tested samples for EPO. Of the tests for the first two weeks, almost every sample for Asteriskstrong was either positive for EPO or showed evidence of microdosing. None did in the third week, where Tyler Hamilton says Motoman went home after the lead was insurmountable. Of the samples from others outside of the Postal Service team, less than 8% tested positive. Ironically, despite the "everyone does it" mentality, it sounds like most of the riders were spooked by the Festina Affair, and avoided doping in competition that year. It's probably why his lead was so strong with a third of the race to go.

Yeah you're probably right - unless the punishments are there, athletes will take every advantage they can get. Testing has gotten so much better though. But I think we need harsher punishments - especially financial. Armstrong should have nearly all of his money taken by the US government, and I'm not saying this because I think he should be bankrupted - I'm saying it because nearly all the money he made would have been through fraudulent means (defrauding sponsors by claiming he was clean, defrauding race organisers of the prize money, defrauding the public). If he ever made any money through legitimate means, he could keep that. But I don't see what money he has ever made through legitimate means. Even today, he does a podcast, and I don't know if he does make money through this, but if he did, it would again be fraudulent, because the only reason he has a profile at all is due to cheating. And he has money from an Uber investment, but the money he invested presumably has come from race winnings, sponsor money, and/or things like book sales, all of which was gained through fraudulent means. The financial punishments for cheaters needs to be harsher. Yes we should ban from competition as well, absolutely. That's a very good punishment. But financial punishment needs to be harsher too - we cannot allow people to walk away with money obtained through fraud. Do we let those who commit mortgage fraud get away with their money? Do we let those who get money through identity fraud walk away with the money? Do we let bank robbers get away with the money? Perhaps we should also have jail time. It is nonsensical that cheaters, who have such a MASSIVE impact on their competitors by destroying their careers (especially in the case of Armstrong who actively used his influence to get riders like Christophe Bassons hounded out of the peloton due to Bassons being anti-doping), should be able to walk away. They are materially destroying the careers of their competitors. Fraudulently obtained income from cheating at sports should go into a) anti-doping efforts and research, and b) compensating the clean riders who suffered material financial losses (both in terms of lost winnings and in terms of damage to their brand which might otherwise have brought in significant income through book sales etc. if they had won races instead of the cheaters).

@@dc8890 Indeed. He shouldn't have been allowed to settle his case with the US government for pennies on the dollar. Make the bans so long that it isn't worth the risk (Olympic sports, for example, get a four year ban, no questions asked), if not a lifetime ban for cheaters.

Why does it piss you off? try riding for 3 weeks as hard and fast as you can and see if you don't want drugs to cope.

I have competed at olympic level so i do understand what it takes. Im pissed off with riders that did the same thing as Tyler that are involved in the sport today that say they didnt take drugs. just own up to what they did. Tyler was one of many brillant cyclist

Unbias Every Elite Athlete gets TUE (Therapy Use Exemption). These drugs fall into a grey area that is abused left and right. Seems like elite cyclists all have Asthma and require constant meds. Regarding bike weights do you realize that in 1908 they were already riding 11 kg bikes?. Greg Lemond did not beat Fignon at the Tour the France, he did best him by using a technical advantage such as tt helmet and bars, much lighter bike (7 kg). Fignon did not want to cheat with technical advantages and Lamonde should of been disqualified since his equipment was not really fully authorized to be used by the UCI. Basically according to records no one has ever ridden a 14 kg road bike in any of the Tour de France races in all its history. It took 100 years for lightweight bikes to be affordable to the mass consumers, go over that again in your head A Stupid Bicycle!! Imagine all the products that have come and gone and the mass consumer never had the change to use it. Let me ask you this do you think Hollywood wants a full Panavision kit to be $1000? Of course not it has to be $150,000 in order to keep the mass consumers away from that tech as once the magic is revealed all of a sudden you have 1 billion pro users of Panavision kits. This is the exact reason why a Steadicam kit which costs no more than $500 in metal springs and metal bars with bearings sells for $70,000 in Hollywood production supplies 😂. It’s why it was kept out of the public for decades because you would have 1 billion steadicam users thus destroying the “Pro” monopoly on its use.
