Tyler isn't saying "value your era" -- he's saying "value what actually has value to you." He's encouraging people to like shit because it matters to them and not because some "music critic" says something is good or not. A lot of really great art gets overlooked because everyone's afraid of being into something that doesn't have some stupid seal of approval.

Yeah I feel like shawn is missing the point of what tyler was trying to say. His point as a whole is that hip hop attacks people for their true opinions on rap to the point where its just a default greatest of all-time list, or any rapper list in general that people have by default so your opinion cannot be criticized( weather you really believe it or not.). Rappers themselves when asked who are their favorite rappers get attacked just for not having the streamline list of rappers that they like. Like when making a list of like the top 50 rappers of all-time you rarely see a TRUE top 50 rappers, just the top 50 lyricist because thats the easist and gets little to no hate but they call it the greatest rappers of all time. These days i feel these list heavily favor lyrical rappers and old school rappers unfairly, Even though some mumble rappers/mood rappers/drill may have way more influence and pull on the rap game than some lyrical rappers but because they're not the default old school rapper they're constantly disrespected. I seen a list where bro was 19 and had 90's rappers over drake in a top 20 list and put bro 19 like that type of disrespectful.

but is he though? he gets mad that kids love to appreciate the golden era or rap music but he made “call me if you get lost” for a similar reason. even though it’s a cop out to start naming a bunch of crictially acclaimed classics in your top 5, there is a reason they’re there but the most important reason is that those records are respected. some records don’t have to be your favorite but you see why that record is what it is for a lot of people.

This is why, while I like discussing music, I try to stay away from ranking things. If I told you my Kanye album ranking I would get flayed alive in these comments, but if I say that I love TLOP and think Ye is an underrated album, people will quietly agree with me. People are so particular about what is an "acceptable" ranking of artists or albums that it's impossible to just give your opinion. I would basically have to lie so I wouldn't get judged on my own opinion
@dizzy7306
@dizzy7306 Жыл бұрын
Its interesting to see it suggested that ranking music and freely enjoying music are mutually exclusive. Actually it's quite easy for me to seperate the two because ranking is something we do as a pastime amongst ourselves or sometimes on the internet, but only to pass the time until we can do the superior pastime: actually listening to music.

but how can you expect a 17 year old to already have their own identity. 💀 teenagers are the most easily influenced people in the world and they hardly understand themselves. also, finding old music is still technically finding new music. it’s probably so hard to actually dive deep into your era because there is no place you can go to find a bunch of hot up & coming artist. just about every rapper with an established career from the 2010 - 2016 had a mixtape or multiple mixtapes on datpiff, had push from blogs, they had a crazy video on worldstar or KZfaq blowing up or had music blowing up on SoundCloud. it’s not the same now. being 17 in 2013 was a goldmine, being 17 in 2023 isn’t. yes you have easy access to every album from every established artist but that doesn’t mean that there’s this surge or new artists making a way for themselves in the same way that those before them did.

Holy shit, thank you for saying this. This is exactly what happened to rock. People would only value the older generations of it so much, that modern rock fell out of the mainstream in the 2010s. This mentality is why we have Imagine Dragons as one of the top rock bands instead of the bands actually pushing the genre in new directions. Bands that get no attention unless you go out of your way to look for it.

I really don't think that's why. Rock music doesn't have that much new to say. It's not that people stick to the old stuff and forget to make new stuff, there's just not that much new stuff that people find interesting because the style has kinda run its course. And I'm not saying there's no new good rock music (one of my favorite bands is BCNR), but the best rock bands nowadays veer into other genres or break trends in rock music. They're the bands like BMTH who get shit on for "not being rock/metal enough". I don't love BMTH either, but they have fresher music than the whole popular rock and metal scene in the past 13 years put together. But the thing is, bands who actually push boundaries will never please people who just want to feel the same thing they did when they listened to AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, etc. because those bands have already made that music. People might think they want a band that sounds like a band they already like until they realize how boring that is.

The older generation constantly tries to make Gen-Z and Millennials feel guilty for not dick riding their music in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. Everyone is entitled to their own music opinions but the more open minded you are, the more you learn to love varieties of genres.

I’m glad you bring up both parts of the conversation here. I think artist like MF DOOM create a weird grey area for hip hop discourse. Early on he was so underground that much of the hardcore fan base came into his classics like Mm FOOD and Madvilliany after they were already old (you can thank Adult Swim for that). Beyond that while DOOM grew in popularity he didn’t become a mainstream household name till after his death. I spent most of my youth consuming DOOM, and in many ways his music has affected me on a personal level. I’ve actually been accused of only liking DOOM because of his acclaim and it was kinda annoying to have to prove that I genuinely like an artist instead of that just being accepted at face value.

That's why The Pretty Toney Album is my favorite Ghostface project. I recognize it's not his best, but I grew up in the suburbs and the first time I heard 'Be This Way' with the Billy Stewart sample it both introduced me to Blues Soul and R&B and also made me understand what sampling and music production was once I'd listened to 'We'll Always Be Together' and compared the two tracks. For a lot of white kids who grew up through 9/11 in the Midwest like me, we ended up just hearing Eminem and the party stuff from the bling era on the radio, which wasn't the best gateway into hip hop. Ghostface really primed me to click with the broader hip hop landscape post-high school, and I love that album a lot for it.

I understand what he saying and I see both sides. I grew up playing video games so a lot of the hip hop I was put onto early was thru soundtracks. So a lot of that was Jay z, Nas, too short, mobb deep, Kanye, etc. however my era based on my age is anything 2010 and beyond. So I think there are ways to ORGANICALLY run into music that isn’t form your time, without trying to force yourself into specific conversations for validation. I actually listened to Things Fall apart by The Roots today. I didn’t like most of it, but that’s bc it’s 2023 and I’ve already heard more modern takes on the same subject matter. Not to say the rapping wasn’t great cuz it was, but I didn’t feel the need to praise it bc the instrumentals didn’t hit as hard and they shouldn’t. On the other hand, Stankonia ALWAYS hits. Bc it was so left that those sounds are still yet to be replicated. And that’s the beauty of subjectivity. Both are great albums from before I was born, but I only go back to one.

Its not really both sides. I don't know how much you've been involved in online hip hop discourse but usually when people are "debating" music or saying their favorites, they feel the need to put in some old albums or artists to make their list "objectively" correct. (basically acceptable to the people they are showing their list to) I know because there was a point when I used to do that too where I would put some older artists I hardly listened to or enjoyed like Tupac over a different artist I enjoyed more like IDK. People only do that sort of thing for validation and all Tyler is saying is don't let your music taste and opinions be determined by what other people tell you to like, just like what you like. He's not saying that you can't like music before your time just that if you do let it be because you enjoy it, not because some old head will laugh at you for not including it in your top ten list.

Your favourite artist 99% of case should be WHAT YOU LISTEN TO THE MOST. Thats perfectly fine and acceptable. But people have this pressure to say the OBJECTIVE best rappers when thats just BULLSHIT. I feel like this is a sentiment shared among people who consume music and are also very online. It can be easy to be swept into the echo chamber about what you like and what's the best. But one of my favorite questions to ask people when I meet them is what kind of music you like? It's a really easy icebreaker cause people who like music love to talk about with others. And I'm always interested in new music I haven't heard.

Me personally I don’t have people like Tupac or BIG that high because I simply just wasn’t alive to experience what they did and how they influenced people. It goes both ways like Kendrick Lamar and I like Kendrick because of the experiences I went through with his music. At the end of the day it’s all opinion based

Like if we're going off of a certain criteria & stats, there's clear rankings. The fun is in the debating cause someone might value 1 stat (sales) over the other (impact on culture) and its value in Hip Hop. But ur personal list is ur personal list. It's corny on both sides. When mfs try to fit in n say "___ is in my top 5" but just wants cool points from the traditional hip hop heads lol. N it's corny when mfs just say the most recent n popular mf to seem "in"

Objectivity is not a thing in music, music just like anything creative is all subjective. The problem is that some people can’t understand that and if you have any take about a certain artist, genre, or whatever that’s different from others it’s a problem. Having musical discussions can be so mind numbing and toxic at times because people just can’t grasp what personal taste is.

That point about WHY you like a certain album resonates with me. I got into hip-hop in the middle of highschool. I grew up listening to punk rock and grunge because it's what my dad.listened too and I got into hip-hop mainly through listening to endless lofi playlists during and to and from school and from there got exposed to a lot of rappers both mainstream and underground. Like I only learned about DOOM through hearing his verses ripped over lofi then I discovered his discography without being "put on" by other fans which led to, I think, a much more personal connection to his music. So when I say DOOM is in my top 5 I don't approach that objectively because the enjoyment I get from it is very much based off how I was exposed to it in the first place.

Honestly, I think Tyler’s thinking is forward thinking which is why others genres per say don’t have a ranking tier, but the culture that hip hop has been based on is competition and beef, thus why we still have the ranking system in the genre, perhaps the future of hip hop might be like Tyler described were we leave that mentality behind

Well everything is handled this way now because every thought passes through the social media filter. Social media turns our opinions into a competition and our statements spark investigations. Best albums get talked about right next to Jordan/Lebron arguments. We endlessly try to speak objectively about subjective topics. Stop analyzing all the angles, don't worry about what people will think if you express yourself. Don't be afraid to be proven wrong and don't be offended on someone else's behalf. Feel empowered to walk away from a convo agreeing to disagree. This is how we can all remain unique and have conversations that spark ideas. But a lot of people are not 'idea' people. A lot of people are not inspired to go find what inspires them. Social media allows for the safe takes to shine and those who haven't developed their own opinion can cling to it without facing ridicule. I think Tyler and Shawn are saying the same thing. Shawn just either misinterpreted what Tyler said, or is trying to add a bit of inclusiveness to his argument. I don't think Tyler is being all that cynical here. He's saying people should just be themselves. "You got 17 year olds like, 'Yeah, dude, fuckin' Ready to Die and Enter the Wu Tang is my top 2 albums ever..' I'm like bro you just got hair on your dick. Stop - It's performative. [...] I don't care about people's 'objective' top nothing... Tell me what is YOUR favorite shit - because you learn so much from people, you get context..." "I don't like to engage in Hip Hop discourse anymore. Not because I don't believe what people are saying about what they like -- it's just because I don't find it fun because the same arguments end up getting used over and over again."

I’m one of those 90s babies with older parents that listened to that music so I grew up with it and connect with Tupac,Pharcyde, The Roots,OutKast,etc because of my childhood.not because older people or blogs say you should just love this Nas album because it came out in 94 or 96.

Some times the older stuff kids find just sound so different than the current sound and it just captivates you. I grew up listening to the 2000's hip hop/rap soley off the radio because my parents refused to buy the cd's for me. So I got used to Lil Wayne, Akon, Soulja Boy etc. After a while I just stopped listening to Hip Hop all together and became more enamored in Classic Rock like my Father. But when I heard Low End Theory from ATCQ for the first time in high school it was so different and I ended up listening to the whole album in one sitting without saying anything. That album solely re-ignited my love for Hip Hop.

I think this is a perfect understanding of what it means to value the generation in which you live musically. Contrarily, I do believe that later 1900’s music ranging from the 50’s and later (not exclusively) is much better. Not only in rap, but also jazz, pop, funk, etc. A lot of older generations went into making music with more intention as well as a greater musical understanding in terms of melodies, chord progression, time signatures, etc. This is mainly due to the exposure some communities were able to have that are no longer as tangible. But, I think dickriding older generations in order to substantiate your music taste to a significantly biased group leaves the discussion for music boring. I think we are stuck with old head mentality because they are not willing to hear what this generation has to offer and consider a lot of our shit garbage. Personally, I have also fallen into this category to a degree and have a distaste for a lot of the rap music that comes out now because of it’s ever continuous symmetry and I’m only 22. But I hope to broaden my horizons to really understand and grasps the sounds of todays music on a deeper and more comprehensive level.

As someone who's been a fan of hip-hop, for what I would call 4 generations, Tyler is right. There are great artist out there who will forever test the time but those intangibles that truly made them great get lost when when you don't experience their journey. I'm not saying you can't enjoy their music but no amount "research" will replace actually experiencing the music within that moment. I was part of the culture that put 2Pac and Biggie as his #1 and #2 spot - and when I listen to them again, they do go back up there because that stuff still resonates regardless of time. With that being said tho people I would consider the greatest rappers are all from the late 90’s early 2000’s (Em, Pac, Ye, Wayne, etc.) and I heard them as a child but technically my era is like Migos, Kendrick, Cole, Future, Thug, etc. so I think it’s not fair to say that just cuz you like something out of your era of music that’s critically acclaimed means you’re just being a poser. I think this brings to the table the idea that if you convince yourself that what you like is what you like, it doesn't matter how you got into that certain album or movie or show in the first place. If you got into that piece of art to appeal to a certain crowd, or to be different or what have you, it doesn't matter if you would have gravitated toward that art before you felt the pressure to appeal to an audience or whatever, that piece of art is now what you like regardless. And isn't it the point of art to push yourself to discover new kinds of art that you wouldn't have been opened to beforehand? We convince ourselves of what we like, and we can push ourselves to see the beauty in things we wouldn't have seen before.

i completely agree with you- music shouldn’t have a timeframe, just like what you like and don’t rank it because that’s bullshit and can encourage elitism, instead, why don’t we just explain why we like stuff? I listened to Chance The Rappers colouring book the other day and it’s genuinely one of my favourite releases of all time, it’s so experimental and so bright, it’s a fun listen, idgaf about what the critics say, that’s my shit and it’s really good. i love all the bright synths, the crazy beats, the mad horns that come out of nowhere sometimes, the more somber tracks too, the concepts it touches about faith, society, expectations. It’s all just a really neat album and I just think it’s amazing because of that.

I understand exactly what Tyler is saying. This conversation needs nuance tho. I am an 80s baby so of course Biggie, Pac, etc. were the giants of my era. With that said, I didn’t like Pac that much. This was and still is considered blasphemy. I don’t care. I have Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest as my faves in the game during that time. So it’s all relative to what lands on your ear and how it lands. As for this era: the old heads like myself have to understand that this era is not for most us to understand, and that’s ok. I hate mumble rap with a passion but I also understand somebody might’ve hated rappers I revere. Is Tyler being cynical? It leans that way. But he’s also a creative who could give a shit less about what the masses think. He creates (no pun intended) shit that he fucks with. Basically up until recently most of the “rap” community wasn’t paying him any mind. So he danced like nobody was watching. There’s a freedom in that. All that to say, eras change and people love what they love for whatever reason (genuine or not). The only way a genre continues is with progression of sound and ideas. I don’t know where hip hop is or where it goes from here….

I agree with your comment but I would like to point out that Tyler didn't just recently start getting attention. His earliest works were incredibly popular back in the day and 3/6 of his albums have been critical darlings. He's certainly gain more respect in the past 5-6 years now that he has grown out of his angsty teen early stuff though.

@@Evan_Schaefering I said “rap” community in quotes on purpose. I know he’s had a a great run of albums for sure. I have them on vinyl for a reason lol. But…I’m talkin about the DJ Khaleds and some “rap” dudes/old heads felt about his quirky style. They can’t deny him now. But there were definitely some folks that didn’t fully accept him.

I feel like tyler is mistaking preference with quality..if i was asked who i liked at 17 nelly would have been there lmfao..but was he a top mc? No!! Top is about quality and not preference...

@@afrosamourai400how important does quality have to be before the high set fundamentals begin to jeopardize a musical genre? You should take pride in your craft and strive to improve purely for self satisfaction, but striving consistently to compete is discouraging and exhausting at a point

the part that explains it the most is when he tells people to be subjective, not objective with music; you can't pick the objectively best albums, but you can pick your own personal favourites. people are trying to list the "best" music, instead of their favourite music.

I mean i agree with what hes saying about people putting their top 5 as exactly what twitter would accept, but i also dont think its fair to say that its ridiculous for a 17 year old to listen to enter the wu tang or ready to die. People like what they like, and that doesnt necessarily mean they're 'copying' hip hop twitter. Sure there's plenty of people out there who only listen to what fantano approves, but there's also plenty of people who just love those albums because they're great.

"There's too much going on right now to be infatuated with music from previous generations." I disagree. Life is too short to LIMIT the media you consume by era. I don't think the new generation of artists are more deserving of attention simply because they're new. Let's be real it's not consumer responsibility to make sure genres progress, we just want the best entertainment. So I agree that discourse about music would be better if people talked about WHY they like the things they're giving attention. I personally just listen to music my brain craves regardless of era or genre, but there is a pattern of me gravitating towards music from past generations. Certain trends in current music just don't peak the interest of my brain. It's as simple as that for most people. Not everyone who prefers older generations of hip hop, r&b, etc. are tryna virtue signal for attention, and that cynicism is unnecessary, i agree.

….the extreme cynicism point is a great one too! I’m an older fan but like some of the new rappers, authors, breakers/dancers, beat boxers, visual artists, etc. I’m not fake deep though. Sometimes you can see greatness without being from the context it was born out of.

Tyler used to listen to 70"s jazz when he was 19. So people can think older works are the best. When I was 17 tribe called quest was my favorite rap group. But I hear his point about the unnecessary arguments and ignoring the current

It always sucks bc you can see how fast opinions blindly switch once Fantano puts out his rating. Same thing happened with Isaiah Rashad’s THIB. I love it, but it really felt like many people stopped praising it once the review came in

I don’t think Tyler’s talking about “your era” at all. He’s just saying like what you like. If it’s older fine, if it came out yesterday, fine, as long as you like it. I think with the comment about the 14 y/o whose top 10 are all guys from the 80s is that it’s suspicious
