Tyler isn't saying "value your era" -- he's saying "value what actually has value to you." He's encouraging people to like shit because it matters to them and not because some "music critic" says something is good or not. A lot of really great art gets overlooked because everyone's afraid of being into something that doesn't have some stupid seal of approval.

It honestly feels like a huge circlejerk of people leeching off of others opinions because they cave to peer shame and the cycle repeats for the simple fact that someone's personal favs are "too out there/weird" or their "music taste is trash"

In addition to Tyler’s point, I believe the “top 5” argument makes it harder to enjoy the music because you spend so much time trying to correctly categorize something, thus forgetting why you liked it in the first place.

It's not even about necessarily valuing your era, but it's about valuing your own subjective experience of music. Just be honest with what you actually like and stand by it instead of trying to to make sure your opinions fit some collective consensus.

Holy shit, thank you for saying this. This is exactly what happened to rock. People would only value the older generations of it so much, that modern rock fell out of the mainstream in the 2010s. This mentality is why we have Imagine Dragons as one of the top rock bands instead of the bands actually pushing the genre in new directions. I agree. I like to personally listen to artists in my generation and younger because I’ve always wanted to find the potential in new sounds/waves. The older generation constantly tries to make Gen-Z and Millennials feel guilty for not dick riding their music in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. Everyone is entitled to their own music opinions but the more open minded you are, the more you learn to love varieties of genres.

I’m glad you bring up both parts of the conversation here. I think artist like MF DOOM create a weird grey area for hip hop discourse. Early on he was so underground that much of the hardcore fan base came into his classics like Mm FOOD and Madvilliany after they were already old (you can thank Adult Swim for that). Beyond that while DOOM grew in popularity he didn’t become a mainstream household name till after his death. I spent most of my youth consuming DOOM, and in many ways his music has affected me on a personal level. I’ve actually been accused of only liking DOOM because of his acclaim and it was kinda annoying to have to prove that I genuinely like an artist instead of that just being accepted at face value.

That's why The Pretty Toney Album is my favorite Ghostface project. I recognize it's not his best, but I grew up in the suburbs and the first time I heard 'Be This Way' with the Billy Stewart sample it both introduced me to Blues Soul and R&B and also made me understand what sampling and music production was once I'd listened to 'We'll Always Be Together' and compared the two tracks. For a lot of white kids who grew up through 9/11 in the Midwest like me, we ended up just hearing Eminem and the party stuff from the bling era on the radio, which wasn't the best gateway into hip hop. Ghostface really primed me to click with the broader hip hop landscape post-high school, and I love that album a lot for it.

We talk about music like it’s sports and that’s the problem. We treat certain albums like they are objectively better when they aren’t. It’s just what you value and what means something to you. It’s all subjective and all valid.

He's very heavy handed with it but i agree for the most part. Personally me and my brother have now bonded over diving into loads of music from all time periods and showing each other cool shit. I understand what he saying and I see both sides. I grew up playing video games so a lot of the hip hop I was put onto early was thru soundtracks. So a lot of that was Jay z, Nas, too short, mobb deep, Kanye, etc. however my era based on my age is anything 2010 and beyond. So I think there are ways to ORGANICALLY run into music that isn’t form your time, without trying to force yourself into specific conversations for validation. I actually listened to Things Fall apart by The Roots today. I didn’t like most of it, but that’s bc it’s 2023 and I’ve already heard more modern takes on the same subject matter. Not to say the rapping wasn’t great cuz it was, but I didn’t feel the need to praise it bc the instrumentals didn’t hit as hard and they shouldn’t. On the other hand, Stankonia ALWAYS hits. Bc it was so left that those sounds are still yet to be replicated. And that’s the beauty of subjectivity. Both are great albums from before I was born, but I only go back to one.

I agree to a certain degree. Some people r old souls, or the music ur raised on becomes apart of u. Songs with production that feels like Just Blaze, Swizz, 9th Wonder, Premier, etc. gonna hit me different than the popular sound now. But focusing too much on the past, u miss the fire mfs out there that r NEW & supplying that fix if that sound is what u prefer.

Everything Tyler said is facts, and ive had the same thoughts for years. I dont think what he said is actually about eras, its just the example that he gave. People will have artists in their top 5 like Kendrick but barely listen to his music. Their most played artists will be lil durk or lil baby but theyll turn around and say Kendrick and Cole are their favourite artists. Your favourite artist 99% of case should be WHAT YOU LISTEN TO THE MOST. Thats perfectly fine and acceptable. But people have this pressure to say the OBJECTIVE best rappers when thats just BULLSHIT. Art is subjective and you should have personal connection with your music. Your favourite album should be the BEST album in your eyes. Everything else is BS and pandering.

I feel exactly what he's talking about. I'm hip hop 'til I die, but two of the most complete and satisfying albums I have ever heard are Jamiroquai's "A Funk Odyssey" and Daft Punk's "Discovery". They're connected to some of the best times of my life; I was in college when those albums came out and my roommate introduced me to those groups, and I introduced him to hip hop. We expanded each other's music tastes because we listened to different shit. One of his favorite artists to this day is DMX and one of my favorite artists is Beck. I prolly never would have listened to those groups of not for him.

Debating ratings and discussing art are two extremely different things and it’s super important for groups around music to focus on the latter more

People are often biased cause of certain music helped or applied to them. but people don’t value they own opinions they go off another person’s opinion it should be you solely, people love to flex they taste these days which shouldnt be the case your taste is your taste

I feel like this is a sentiment shared among people who consume music and are also very online. It can be easy to be swept into the echo chamber about what you like and what's the best. But one of my favorite questions to ask people when I meet them is what kind of music you like? It's a really easy icebreaker cause people who like music love to talk about with others. And I'm always interested in new music I haven't heard.

It's also true that music can have better or worse eras. People may feel an older era is better than the one they're in, and that's fine. You shouldn't be forced to like or prefer bad music simply because the dudes making it are your age.

That point about WHY you like a certain album resonates with me. I got into hip-hop in the middle of highschool. I grew up listening to punk rock and grunge because it's what my dad.listened too and I got into hip-hop mainly through listening to endless lofi playlists during and to and from school and from there got exposed to a lot of rappers both mainstream and underground. Like I only learned about DOOM through hearing his verses ripped over lofi then I discovered his discography without being "put on" by other fans which led to, I think, a much more personal connection to his music. So when I say DOOM is in my top 5 I don't approach that objectively because the enjoyment I get from it is very much based off how I was exposed to it in the first place.

Honestly, I think Tyler’s thinking is forward thinking which is why others genres per say don’t have a ranking tier, but the culture that hip hop has been based on is competition and beef, thus why we still have the ranking system in the genre, perhaps the future of hip hop might be like Tyler described were we leave that mentality behind

Well everything is handled this way now because every thought passes through the social media filter. Social media turns our opinions into a competition and our statements spark investigations. Best albums get talked about right next to Jordan/Lebron arguments. We endlessly try to speak objectively about subjective topics. Stop analyzing all the angles, don't worry about what people will think if you express yourself. Don't be afraid to be proven wrong and don't be offended on someone else's behalf. Feel empowered to walk away from a convo agreeing to disagree. This is how we can all remain unique and have conversations that spark ideas. But a lot of people are not 'idea' people. As much as I love Tyler’s artistry and he is one of my favorites… I disagree that most young people who for some reason appreciate old school hip hop are just “disingenuous”. I’m one of those 90s babies with older parents that listened to that music so I grew up with it and connect with Tupac,Pharcyde, The Roots,OutKast,etc because of my childhood.not because older people or blogs say you should just love this Nas album because it came out in 94 or 96.

When i was a teenager, i connected to older music because the modern music that i would discover once i got internet access years later was just not available to me, and so classic rock radio was the only radio station i could stomach

His point actually extends to sports too. Like everything has to be a list, everything has to correspond to what the consensus believes and “objectivity” doesn’t exist anymore in cases of Twitter. I used to listen to reviews and reactions of albums seeing if people agreed with my takes. I’m not a heavy hot takes guy, but I always looked for validation. Even though people wouldn’t experience it like I did. Mr Morale and Some Rap Songs are the most important albums to me. Only because it hit me in such a personal way that it brought me to tears.

I think this is a perfect understanding of what it means to value the generation in which you live musically. Contrarily, I do believe that later 1900’s music ranging from the 50’s and later (not exclusively) is much better. Not only in rap, but also jazz, pop, funk, etc. A lot of older generations went into making music with more intention as well as a greater musical understanding in terms of melodies, chord progression, time signatures, etc. This is mainly due to the exposure some communities were able to have that are no longer as tangible. But, I think dickriding older generations in order to substantiate your music taste to a significantly biased group leaves the discussion for music boring. I think we are stuck with old head mentality because they are not willing to hear what this generation has to offer and consider a lot of our shit garbage. Personally, I have also fallen into this category to a degree and have a distaste for a lot of the rap music that comes out now because of it’s ever continuous symmetry and I’m only 22. But I hope to broaden my horizons to really understand and grasps the sounds of todays music on a deeper and more comprehensive level.

As someone who's been a fan of hip-hop, for what I would call 4 generations, Tyler is right. There are great artist out there who will forever test the time but those intangibles that truly made them great get lost when when you don't experience their journey. I'm not saying you can't enjoy their music but no amount "research" will replace actually experiencing the music within that moment. I feel a lot of people get sucked up into mob mentality when it comes to their "preferences" and don't truly discover who their favorite artist are or are too scared to admit it

I’ve learned so much from discourse though. I listen to your stuff for the discourse. I was part of the culture that put 2Pac and Biggie as his #1 and #2 spot - and when I listen to them again, they do go back up there because that stuff still resonates regardless of time. But someone calling me out and saying Drake and Kanye has some great music and to check it out opened my horizons which I’d never have got without posting my opinion and asking for thoughts. I started with them and have spent the last 10 years going down the rabbit hole and introducing myself to so many more great artists.

What Tyler is touching on is something that is felt in social media discussions regarding any form of art really and not just Hip Hop As a huge filmnerd who is very active on Letterboxd it's always more fun following people that seem to have a very personal top 4 on their profile instead of just the canonised greats ( Godfather, Taxi Driver, Fight Club, Empire Strikes Back, Shawshank Redemption etc.) because they don't come of as rigid in their opinions nor trying to go for that pesky "objective" outlook that much of music and film discourse boils down to I like me some NWA and Wu Tang but I be lying to myself if I didn't admit that more modern names such as Kendrick, Ye or Denzel are more my personal favourites than many greats from the old guard

I think this brings to the table the idea that if you convince yourself that what you like is what you like, it doesn't matter how you got into that certain album or movie or show in the first place. If you got into that piece of art to appeal to a certain crowd, or to be different or what have you, it doesn't matter if you would have gravitated toward that art before you felt the pressure to appeal to an audience or whatever, that piece of art is now what you like regardless. And isn't it the point of art to push yourself to discover new kinds of art that you wouldn't have been opened to beforehand? We convince ourselves of what we like, and we can push ourselves to see the beauty in things we wouldn't have seen before.

Being open-minded about which albums, artists, and/or singles you find to be best is extremely important. You can like things based on your own personal values, period that's it. I personally feel like 2014 FHD and KOD are Cole's best albums, but 4YEO is my favorite J. Cole song EVER, and it's not even from my favorite Cole album!

i completely agree with you- music shouldn’t have a timeframe, just like what you like and don’t rank it because that’s bullshit and can encourage elitism, instead, why don’t we just explain why we like stuff? I listened to Chance The Rappers colouring book the other day and it’s genuinely one of my favourite releases of all time, it’s so experimental and so bright, it’s a fun listen, idgaf about what the critics say, that’s my shit and it’s really good. i love all the bright synths, the crazy beats, the mad horns that come out of nowhere sometimes, the more somber tracks too, the concepts it touches about faith, society, expectations. It’s all just a really neat album and I just think it’s amazing because of that.

I understand exactly what Tyler is saying. This conversation needs nuance tho. I am an 80s baby so of course Biggie, Pac, etc. were the giants of my era. With that said, I didn’t like Pac that much. This was and still is considered blasphemy. I don’t care. I have Outkast and A Tribe Called Quest as my faves in the game during that time. So it’s all relative to what lands on your ear and how it lands. As for this era: the old heads like myself have to understand that this era is not for most us to understand, and that’s ok. the part that explains it the most is when he tells people to be subjective, not objective with music; you can't pick the objectively best albums, but you can pick your own personal favourites. people are trying to list the "best" music, instead of their favourite music.

I am not a big hip-hop fan but RTJ are my favourite because I never laughed so hard from lyrics and love the poetism.

I mean i agree with what hes saying about people putting their top 5 as exactly what twitter would accept, but i also dont think its fair to say that its ridiculous for a 17 year old to listen to enter the wu tang or ready to die. People like what they like, and that doesnt necessarily mean they're 'copying' hip hop twitter. Sure there's plenty of people out there who only listen to what fantano approves, but there's also plenty of people who just love those albums because they're great.

I don't think the new generation of artists are more deserving of attention simply because they're new. Let's be real it's not consumer responsibility to make sure genres progress, we just want the best entertainment. So I agree that discourse about music would be better if people talked about WHY they like the things they're giving attention. I personally just listen to music my brain craves regardless of era or genre, but there is a pattern of me gravitating towards music from past generations. Certain trends in current music just don't peak the interest of my brain. It's as simple as that for most people. Not everyone who prefers older generations of hip hop, r&b, etc. are tryna virtue signal for attention, and that cynicism is unnecessary, i agree.

….the extreme cynicism point is a great one too! I’m an older fan but like some of the new rappers, authors, breakers/dancers, beat boxers, visual artists, etc. I’m not fake deep though. Sometimes you can see greatness without being from the context it was born out of.
