@@Tristianmedia I'm pretty sure that this doesn't accomplish a ton by itself. There are lots of videos showing this, but what a lot of them DON'T mention is that they have a magnesium rod and a ferro rod. The magnesium rod is what you use to scrape bits off of to light. The ferro rod itself and the stuff you scrape off of it usually isn't flammable. The amount you need of the scrapings in my experience is not worth the effort usually. Admittedly though, in regards to the video. I'm relatively sure that the ferro rod Tyler has was just garbage though. For the most part, everything I saw him doing seemed fine (minus the fire retardant sleeping bag insulation) and still nothing wanted to light. I'm also slightly biased too though. I absolutely despise making fire with those things. They're truly awful the vast majority of the time, and the times they do work, it took an entire hour to get the fire going. EDIT: I just looked it up because I was curious, and apparently ferro rods ARE supposed to be flammable. I've personally never had any luck with the scraping method though. Maybe I'm just bad too and need more practice.
@Tristianmedia
@Tristianmedia 6 ай бұрын
@@frozen6787 Thank you for the education on both rods. I could also be bias but when I go camping I always have a magnesium rod because it helps embed the particles into the dry bark that I normally find. Helps me light it faster. Or if that doesn’t work usually just use friction from wood to wood contact takes longer but it’s the most effective way to make a fire. When I was a kid I watched Cast Away and I always wanted to make a fire like that and it worked but took so long lol but I get what you mean. I believe also it was the cheap rod he had since it was a hundred dollar camping gear.

So if you ever want to do another Survival Challenge, I can give you a few tips from as a pretty avid hunter. When using ferro rods, or sparks in general, you want the tinder to be pretty flat and fluffed up. Moss, dried grass, and DEAD pine needles (or fir needles) work the best. Don't use anything that still has water. If it's green, leave it alone for fires. If it's brown, typically it's fine to use. Cattails also do well, but you have to dry them first if the bushy part of it is wet. Try to use the ferro rod roughly 6-8 inches away from the tinder for the best results. You'll be able to get a little more accuracy, though the sparks can go off in random directions sometimes. If you're too close, when you move away, the draft you make when you move quickly can snuff out the ember. You can do 1 of 2 things to keep the bugs away: Smoke them out with the fire (Use moss, leaves, and bundles of pine needles), or use herbs like Marigold, which is found in the Midwest and Southern United States. You can easily tell because they're orange flowers that look kinda like orange cotton balls. You can grind them up in your hands and get some of the oil-- you can tell that you got marigolds because they will smell faintly like bug spray you can buy at a store, that bitter, biting kind of scent. Rub that oil around your neck and the parts of your body that doesn't have clothes on it, like your arms and face. Mosquitoes and bugs like horseflies hate it.

Nice! Love your channel! Your ferro rod technique was spot on… The back of the blade usually needs to be prepped…. The tender was the issue. Pocket lint, paper, lint shaving’s from your jeans, and frayed cotton socks work great. Also, putting tender on the ground cools it and not having it in a bird’s nest shape makes it harder to pick it up and blow on. Keep it up! Practice, and you will master it!

Tyler your suppose to “shave” the fire starter into your pile of pine needles or leaves or twigs until you have a nice visible coating over your pile then spark into that. The residue that you have “shaved” into the pile will ignite and start your fire. And your sleeping bag is fire retardant lol You crack me up

I'm sure there's 100 other comments like this, but it helps if you grind some of your ferro rod material into what you're trying to light. The sparks from ferro ignite the grindings in the material which help in sparking the ignition source. Can't wait for another survival challenge

if you looked for some birch trees around, there is a type of very flammable oil in the bark of birch trees you could have used, and make it feather off instead of taking the wood off completely, then you have it in basically a manageable bush and is much easier to catch a spark and combust into flames :)

@@shsd7579 It actually does make a difference because the pressure is constant which is what creates more sparks and the rod is still which makes it easier to aim those sparks into a more concentrated area on x material. That being said, he could've shaved the magnesium rod a little which does shorten the life of the rod, but, it gives you a small pile of magnesium that sparks huge instantly almost every strike. This trick is used commonly in wetter conditions but works well to help people learn.

Hey brother. I'm a survival instructor. That's a common AF issue. So a couple things. 1. Lighters are cheap and work better. 2. A much larger ferro rod works better. 3. You need to make a tinder bundle. Think of a birds nest. Pine sap works. birch bark works (but you gotta rough it up) think fibrous furry and fragile. Pocket lint works. You can slide your knife sideways on cotton socks to get lint. Also a lot of sleeping material is fire resistant but it was a good idea. Don't feel bad dude. This happens a lot to newbs and even some intermediate guys. Lighters and storm matches are champs. And magnifying glass over 10x mag (if you have sun). The biggest thing with fire is your tinder bundle skill. After that, make a feather stick kinda like what you were doing with the wood chips and you're golden. You did great man ALSO this sounds dumb but great thinking with how hot the handles are gonna get. SOOOOO MANY PEOPLE get burned like that. Like at many survival schools that's a serious issue. So you have to super duper harp on it constantly. You'd do great in a school brother And to answer your last question on how did we go from dirt to now. Community and family. Not being all hippy nonsense. One group cooked, one built, one hunted etc. similar to what we have now just less industrialized.

@@Squisky you don't need to make fire to live in a city. You don't need a ferro rod. Or a lighter at all unless there's a major incident. If that's the case fire is a low priority. So that's an invalid point bro.

the cotton in sleeping bags usually have some type of fire retardant in it. Also if you scrape the back of the knife on the feral rod to put some in a pile to aid in the lighting capabilities. Most of primitive camping is trial and error, just think about sports or even a new camera/computer there is a learning curve. I applaud you for attempting many different types of starter. Keep up the good work and can't wait to see you attempt it again.
