Funny thing - Dracula actually did sing with a metal band. Actor Christopher Lee (Dracula being his most famous role) put out several metal albums. Apparently he was a very talented opera singer - but he never fully realized his dream, due to WW2.

I thought of a few Finnish bands you could review: Sentenced (with Ville Laihiala), H.I.M (much less heavier), The 69 Eyes, Sonata Arctica, Tarja (she is an opera singer as yourself but sang in Nightwish). Also not to be a pain but Peter Steele was a Goth, not an emo 🖤

Saw Type O with Pantera on Far Beyond Driven tour. Peter wrapped up his set by saying the funniest thing I’ve heard at a concert: “For those who hate us, this is our last song. For those who like us, this last song is 30 minutes long!”… I instantly became a fan.

It’s interesting (and sad) that we lost one of the tallest singers (Steele 6’8”) and one of the shorter singers (Dio 5’4”) months apart. Not to mention, both had very distinct vocal styles.

Pete drank heavily because he was actually shy about performing in front of a crowd, so his vocals live arent usually to good compared with the studio.

Yes Peter is all natural 6’8” black hair and vampire like teeth, he just kinda came that way. He did lift weights though. The voice difference you’re noticing is that he had debilitating stage fright and actually openly admitted that he had to drink quite a bit to make himself go on stage every single time. But I’ve been all the watching all reaction videos I can find to Type O Negative the last 2 days (it’s not like there’s hundreds) and I’ve noticed something in the reactions. There’s something about his voice and him in general (possibly his size combined with cheekbones and jawline) that automatically appeals to women. It’s like our hindbrain is going “alpha mate! Go retrieve! Get stool or climb him if necessary”. I see it change every woman’s face the moment they either see him fully or hear him sing, and I’m totally not exempt. It’s so weird and hilarious, it makes me think of a cavewoman brain. “He make good hunter 🤔”

Quite a bit? Peter drank himself to death. His own words: "my stage fright got sometimes so bad that I drank four bottles before, four bottles during and four bottles after the gig" for clarification not beer wine bottles, alcohol of one bottle of wine equals 3 beer. So imagine drinking 30 to 35 cans of beer one day. Even if you are woman this would make 15 to 17 cans of beer

@@MichaTheLight Not really; he died of a heart attack as a result of diverticulitis, which is a disease of the lower colon. I also have it, and I'm teetotal. He was clean and sober when he died.

@@vermilliongecko I actually knew that but the cause of the heart failure wasn’t found and made public till later (untreated diverticulitis > sepsis > heart failure) so COD was a little complicated for people who don’t know medical stuff well and it had absolutely nothing to do with drugs or alcohol. Could have happened to anyone who didn’t get their gut pain checked.

Novel ahead. I was one of the lucky few to follow them from way back. I saw them every time they came to my state driving hundreds of miles just to see the next show. I met and hung out with them several times and they were all amazing and wonderful people and i miss them all dearly. Peter was a huge guy. 6'8" and had a really deep chest and wide shoulders. When he talked his voice resonated so deeply that you could feel it all through your body. It tickled your ears and it was almost hard to understand him because of the crazy deep timbre. It was like he had a thunderstorm inside him. I had my arm around him when he was talking and it was so mesmerizing, like holding a tiger purring. I remember being fascinated at how big his hands were as he held my sharpie to sign everyone's autographs. He intentionally used my marker because a security guard was harassing me. He told the guy i could stay with him until he was finished with it. So i stood right next to him while he signed autographs. Funny story, someone brought him the playgirl centerfold to to sign, dick side up and he tells me, "pfft, look what they brought me to sign." and here i am standing there with the real thing about chest level only inches away😳. All i could say was, "...oh...". I had 3 of my own copies at home. Jesus, did we laugh over that. He gave me an enormous hug before getting back on the bus to leave, lifting me right off the ground. In my boots i was 6 foot. He towerd over me. I don't think my feet touched the ground the whole way back to my car. I'll never forget that night. I almost missed the show because i had parked in a place where they needed me to move my car. The concert was over capacity and the fuckers refused to let me back in after i moved my car. Everything i had was inside with my boyfriend, even my glasses. I was really worried i would miss them because i had to move during intermission and they were about to come on next. I walked to the back of the club and saw the big tour buses. I just held my head high and walked between them towards the back door like i belonged there. I figured I'd have to hash it out with the security at the back door. As i got up to the front of the bus a bunch of people started coming out and i kind of just fell in with them. I couldn't really see well but no one seemed to notice i was there. We all went in through the back door and the group i was with turned right... Right onto the stage. 😂 I walked in with the band! I just headed straight and out on the floor. It was surreal. The security from the front spotted me after the show started and took my camera (that they let me in with) and i found out he destroyed it when i went to pick it up after the show. He was the same douche that Peter told to piss off. I'm pretty sure Peter saw him take my camera as i was right in front of the stage. I was devastated when i heard Peter died. Nothing has been the same since. I haven't been to any other concert since. May Peter R.I.P. I'm so glad you enjoyed his music! It was sweet seeing the same excitement i felt when i first heard them over 30 years ago. Watch more.

About the green coloring: I imagine the coloring had to do with Peter Steel. Peter worked for the Parks Department and the kids would call him him the “Green Man” when they saw him in the parks, wearing the green jumpsuit associated with the job. Apparently he loved that job so much that he was stubborn over the idea of leaving it once the band began touring, and those that knew him said Peter considered his experience with Parks & Rec to be the happiest times of his life. In one interview he claimed that leaving that job is what summoned his addiction issues. Peter also seemed to just love the color green.

Green is also a symbol in paganism (which Type O and especially Peter Steel most definitely studied and embraced for commercial reasons, but did not personally adopt), which symbolizes health, wealth, growth, and prosperity. The idea is that, if your fields are green in the spring, you'll probably survive the year.

In his previous band 'Carnivore' he used the colors red and black, because maybe he wanted people to think that band had more of a political message. When he started Type O Negative, he wanted something similar, but they had a different message, so they used green and black.

Actually he’s singing about a pretentious goth girl he was dating. Peter told a a story/joke about it when one time he was having coitus with this girl and she wanted him to hold a mirror over his face so she could see herself having coitus with her self. And he ends the story/joke by Say he was going to go tell her to go f- herself....but she already did.

Yeah. Their live recordings are sadly all a mess. Poor quality sound. The music videos are much more acoustically pleasant. Also agree that the tempo and how it's sung is better.

The green color was what he called “Vinland Green”. I think he just liked green. It was a color of green he developed (is that the right word?) on his own. He used it everywhere including the flag he created for his fictional (but loosely based in reality) country, The Republic of Vinland. It can be found on every release from October Rust through the remainder of their catalog. I remember hearing it was a tough color to accurately reproduce and he was a perfectionist when it came to getting it right. He and Fernandes Guitars came to an agreement and they made a custom bass for him. The shade of green was never right and I thought they never got the electronics quite right either. He only used it for one tour as far as I know. To be honest Fernandes’ shade was awful by comparison. The fangs aren’t something he wears. Read somewhere he had his teeth filed down. Pete and to a lesser extent, the band suffered from stage fright. He turned to wine as a way to cope. The wine use would worsen and eventually he turned to harder drugs. Often in performances you can see him going through multiple bottles of wine during a set. Sadly I’m not sure if many of his vocal “choices” on stage were conscious decisions. I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt though. Pete often remarked that he hated listening to himself live because he hated how sloppy he sounded. Pointing that out as a reference when watching live videos. ‘93-‘97- the band and Pete were in their prime. There are some live vids on YT of performances from those years. Live in Stockholm (90% sure) with a rare performance of the track Bloody Kisses. Simone please correct me if I’m wrong.

In interviews with Kenny and (either Johnny or Josh, I think Johnny) upon the release of the vinyl collection, they lamented the amount of time they spent arguing over the SPECIFIC shade of green with the record company because that’s how particular Peter was about it.

The green color Pete got from his days working in the NYC parks department . The Parks Dept logos and shirt colors were an almost neon green. He did it as a sarcastic statement. I used to hang out with the band in Brooklyn and Staten Island and also did a demo at Josh’s studio ( from what I remember his parents passed away and left him the house) where the band would rehearse and record as well. One of the most underrated bands and greatest guys to know.

The green was there from Slow, Deep, and Hard (the 1st ep) not just from October Rust on. So it has been on everything from the start of Type O Negative.

Back in the early 90's when people still went to music stores, I asked the employee," what new album should I buy, and NIN is one of my favorite bands." He said, "if you like NIN, you're going to love this band." He was absolutely right! To me it seems a crime bands like this never got radio attention, and went unknown for the most part.

I just thought I would add Denis Pauna. Not sure where I came up with band, but it is an awesome take on Typo O Negative. They cover other songs but sung with a Type O Negative vibe. He really sounds very close. I have some on it in my play list at work, and someone that was a fan way back thought it was them.

The green is a complementary color to red, the color of blood, in fact, if you keep watching red for an extended amount of time and close your eyes, you will see this tone of green. Think of all the hidden meaning this might carry!

He was usually three sheets to the wind when performing live. Hence the sloppy lyrics. I heard he was shy and needed the liquid courage to get in front of an audience. Still amazing although slurred.

i met him once in seattle. he most def was a shy person. i remember this fat goth girl walked up right when i was meeting him and started trying to give him her phone number. he just said "uh, ive got to go" and got out of there as fast as he could. i was pissed off.

I saw Type O Negative on Dynamo Open Air in '95 when Peter, in front of 120.000 people, in the middle of the show said: "I've got to take a quick piss. I'll be right back" and left everybody standing there for 2 minutes. :)

Re: the green Peter Steele was very image conscious and wanted to create a clear visual brand that would be attached to their music. He insisted that all band members had and maintained long black hair, for example. Keyboardist Josh Silver, who was Peter's best friend, was also on board with this. Josh wanted the video for Black No. 1 to be in black and green rather than black and white. When the label refused, he didn't speak to their rep for EIGHT YEARS. The colour scheme of the green and black was carried and used through the band's entire career, and not sloppily either. It always draws your attention, whether subtlely or overtly. That was by design. It was part of the Type O Negative experience. (see also: the font and placement of the band name and album title on their album covers).

When I was young in the mid or late nineties I went with a boyfriend to watch Queensryche and Type O Negative were opening for them. I had never heard of them until then. They played for half an hour , slated to play for 45 minutes, and and the crowd was losing its mind. Suddenly a guy came out and interrupted the show. Peter said to us all that it looked like Queensryche didn't like it and wanted to start early. He said they were leaving and invited the crowd to do the same. About half the crowd, including us, left.

Pete's live performances were always much more "loose" and fun than his studio recordings and that's part of why I love them. It goes very well with his sense of humor and not taking himself too serious. I never thought they did any pitch corrections, just keep going until they got the take they wanted. If you are not overly familiar with them I would stick to the albums to better hear his voice.

I remember singing this song along with them. I am 70 and it was awesome. The girls were mostly sll dressed in black gowns at the show with purple highlights in there black hair. It was a small place in Asbury Park. Very entertaining night to say the least. Type O ruled the club scene

I've seen some of your other videos, I don't know how a Type O video snuck past me though. They were absolutely my favorite band, and still are. I first saw them in 1998, not long after my 11th birthday (I got really lucky my mother is a cool person) and then literally every show they did in Philly from that point until Peter sadly died. Pete and the rest of the band got me through some really hard times in my younger angrier years and their music still helps me through life now. May Pete be resting easy wherever he ended, and to Kenny, Johnny and Josh I hope all's well for them.

First off: I really love your channel and the community around it, truly appreciate the great content. I am mainly a silent supporter, but TON videos make me want to speak. :) As a long long time TON fan who knows the band inside and out, a 2007 performance of Peter - especially this one at Wacken - does not do him justice. :( Highly unlikely you read this, but the 1999 Bizarre Festival footage from their DVD "Symphony for the Devil" should be one of the best pro-shots of them. The sound and video are not quite as HQ, but he was in top shape back then - even if under the influence still. Keep it up Elizabeth, cheers from Germany :)

I miss that man like he was a close friend, a relative even, it's crazy. And looking back I realise even more HOW fucking EXTRAORDINARY his voice and vocal abilities were. No-one I've ever heard has or had this colour, this tone and timbre, not close, not even remotely. He was unique and I will never cease to mourn his untimely and preventable demise.

Unfortunately that concert Peter was pretty sick and battling his demons. He has a long "rock star" backstory battling depression, anxieties and addictions. At one point his family even had him turned over to Rikers Island! He often referred to his music being a form of "sonic therapy" and I'd agree as a lot of his music is very relatable. Deaths in the family, addictions, heartbreak and even self loathing are all common motifs found in the music. Of course some of the songs are more tongue and cheek like "I don't wanna be me" or "Electro-Cute" and things of that nature which are reflecting more so on ones own self and how they project that view back into the world (delusion). I honestly love Type O and when I got the call and hour before the news broke that Peter died, he was one of the only "celebrities" I kind of broke down and cried over because he had a really tough struggle and the dude was just a big fun asshole (he'd agree), he loved a lot of things but was struggling with a lot mentally. Guess it's a Catholic thing (relatable).

His family had him turned over to a psych ward due to ongoing mental issues that were made worse with drugs and alcohol. He was incarcerated at Riker's Island for assault on his long-term girlfriend's boy toy (she cheated on him). What's sad is that he died of sepsis from untreated diverticulitis (pockets in the intestines where food can get trapped and rot). Despite his demons, he injected his off-beat sense of humor into everything he and the band did - you can hear it even more with the older stuff (i.e. before Black No. 1). I had the pleasure of being able to spend a lot of time with the band every time they toured Florida - all good guys. I didn't think anything could really intimidate me except when I heard him cuss someone out in half-Russian/half-English. He died the day before my mom (same year) so it will always stay with me

Goths are into goth rock, darkwave, coldwave, industrial, electro and EBM, much different scene. There are plenty of people who enjoy both of course, but it's two different scenes.

They must have been running behind on this set, because they are playing the song at almost ×2 speed... doesn't have the same feel when it is sped up. Still remember the day I met Pete Steele as a 14yr old and bummed him a Camel Wide by a side door to the venue, and wasn't smart enough to ask him to get us in the back. We were in the middle of dealing with a ticket scalper that wanted more than we had, and eventually he gave up on getting more money and took our offer. Should have asked Pete to get us in. Even if it didn't work, worst he could say is no, or he could have said yes, and that would have been awesome. Backstage at Type O, and Pantera... At least we eventually got into the show. Was my 1st concert ever. Never forget it.

I was lucky to be exposed to Type O Negative a few years before they hit it mainstream. During high school (when this song was new) the local radio played the FULL version of Black No. 1 at night a lot. I remember cruising in my little pickup with the windows down and the volume cranked as high as the crappy speakers could handle.

On record, the songs were done to be extremely smooth. When they played live, they were more raw and punk rock versions of the songs with some improve in each song. Also, Peter was a pretty heavy drinker of alcohol, usually red wine on stage so it effected his singing and playing. I discovered them when they first started out and were the opening band for the British punk band the Exploited and was a fan ever since. I saw them at least 8 times, they would play almost every year in Philadelphia on Halloween at the legendary Trocedaro theater. The Green color is just what they chose as a band color. Lots of metal bands used red and black over the years so they wanted to be different. Green is also associated with nature which is by some interpretations merciless and they also had a song called Green man. I think the lyrics of that song explain it.

According to bandmates Peter hated playing live and was heavly "under the influence" during alot of the live shows. As a huge type o fan I have mixed fealings about the live recordings. First of they loose alot of the amazing ambience from the records. And peters vocals, amazing as they are, are realy just a shadow of what he was capable of when he was in the recording studio fully focused. But I can't help but love the "don't give a F***" attitude they had when they played live. It is just so pure rock'n roll. There is a pretty cool live recording of "world coming down" that is worth checking out just because it comes of as such an emotional song to him. Anyways, love your videos and keep up the good work!

I wouldn't say it's Peter or the band live as opposed to this era where he was still drinking and slurring his words. If you watch live stuff from the Slow Deap and Hard up until October Rust he sounds great if not incredible. After his dad died, he unfortutly just wasn't the same. The coke and booze just destroyed him which saddens me to this day.

The creepy green light was an intergal part of Type O Negative. It was key in all their album covers, merch, even instruments. (Kenny Hickey's signature Schecter guitar finish is actually called "Steele Green"). They even have a song called Creepy Green Light. It's a great song!

as a musician it's very easy to play something live a lot faster than an album version. once you start something at too fast of a beat though you are kind of stuck there. wouldn't be surprised with a crowd that big that they possibly just were playing a little quicker than usual. also sometimes in larger festivals musicians dont get a large performance window so with them having very long songs they might have rushed a few to squeeze or 1 or 2 extras in. type o had a lot of really great songs.

I did want to point out that Peter wasn't the biggest fan of doing live shows, and funnily enough his best performances are actually on records. He had a very unique and resonant voice that many a-man have tried to imitate since. But he was one of a kind. As I said on that other video, there's an army of Peter Steele fans who will literally flood your channel every time you react to him. We love him and miss him as if he was family. 💚

Pete was something wonderful, his winking personality and dynamic voice were such a treasure, and Type O was irreplaceable. Their sense of humor and slyly irreverent embracing of Goth culture was wonderful. We'll never have another band like that again, sadly. Side note: I echoe your appreciation of deep male vocals. I have a deep voice, and Pete's voice was so awesome for me to hear when I discovered Type O back in high school. I loved singing their songs because Peter and I had very similar voices.

The green is Pete's gloomy green. It shares the vividness and the semblance of a misty gloomy rainy and swampy day outside in October's rust. Type O Negative were operatic in nature. Peter Steele was a miracle and their output atmospheric and eccentric O+

It makes me happy that you're enjoying Type O Negative. The green is one of the themes/gimmicks that Type O used, along with orange. They used to note a fictional character in their liner notes named Phlogiston Verdigris a little bit, and it was more or less a play on the joke of them using orange and green in their album art/merchandise/etc. Peter Steele was also very much a guy in tune with nature. He used to work for the parks department in New York; and in the After Dark DVD they released, they had an interview section where Peter said Fall was his favorite season "because the trees look like they are on fire" (again, the green and orange theme). Peter also designed the Flag of Vinland (derived from other Nordic Cross flags) and had it quite often displayed during shows, and he used this as a way to honor his Scandinavian heritage (as Vinland is what the Vikings called a portion of the Eastern costal area of the US). Sadly, some hate groups have tried to appropriate the flag, which seems common with several Norse icons and imagery because some people are idiots. Another gimmicky kind of joke that Type O used was kind of an homage to The Beatles. The Beatles were sometimes called the Fab Four; whereas, Type O called themselves The Drab Four. From what I recall, green was Peter's favorite color. It might have started when he worked for the New York Parks Department, where his uniform was solid green. He did say that period of time was the happiest point of his life.

I guess I'm more goth at heart since I never 'looked' goth besides black or navy fingernails at times or occasions with eyeliner in college. Had several good friends (mostly from theater and art classes) that dressed 'gothic-looking' in college and I was more or less the 'Marilyn Munster' of the group. But though I went out with a couple of goth girls in college we didn't really date (remained good friends for years) and neither really liked TON as were not into heavier rock really - more Cure and Bauhaus. I always loved Type O and have only found 1 other person in my life who liked them as much - a coworker at a restaurant. A few friends were amused but not fans. So, I solemnly enjoy Peter Steele's awesome voice, lyrics and band's fantastic sense of heavy melody and harmony, sensuality, cynicism and bizarre humor. I still listen to entire October Rust album every fall and smile.

Love this channel. Great description of Pete’s Drac accent. One thing about these reaction videos, not just this channel, is when they pause the music right before a musical payoff, the release of tension in the chorus etc, and then PAUSE.

Also - The black and green were just colors he liked, and became the band signature. They were perfectionists in the studio, and well known for being just this side of sloppy live. They were amazing.

Pete also had stage fright. The fist time I saw them for October Rust tour. He downed two bottles of wine during the show.

One of the tines I saw them in 1999 or so, Peter started on stage with a full bottle of vodka, ended with an empty one, and actually used the bottle in his right hand to play a song or two. Seeing them live was always an interesting affair, because Peter was usually drinking pretty heavily, and the shows always felt like they could come off the rails at any time.

The music video is cool but it's a shortened radio edit version of the song. If you really want to experience the true artistry of Black No. 1, I recommend the album version. They created so much ambiance and feeling with the keyboards and effects. It's really a masterpiece and paints a picture in your head. (Even though the song is a humorous take on goth girls)

The song “Green Man” is from when he drove a trash truck that picked up the trash at the New York City Parks service. He was in a green jump suit that the park employees wore and being 6’-7” he stood out. The kids that played in the park could tell he was a nice guy and we’re excited when he was on his route and they would see him and excitedly tell their parent “it’s the green man, it’s the green man” it was one of the good memories in his life. He lost so many family members so young in his life. I think that’s where the song “Everything Dies” and “Everyone I love is Dead”.

Type O have the green and black on all of their album covers and it's a strong feature of their overall branding: their logo and merchandise. I love how the colours work together to help create the atmosphere. I especially like the hospital machine blip image on the cover of 'Life is killing me' album.

Those aren't vampire fangs. Those are his real teeth. Peter was really into nature and even worked for the NYC park service. The kids used to call him Green Man. That's why all the green. They even have a song called Green Man.

You need to watch his interviews to completely understand why he does what he does and where he came from. Tremendous showman and very smart business man. Love this band.

I saw them live 6 times, and everytime he had 4 or 5 bottles of wine on stage, he even played his bass once with a bottle

TYPE O NEGATIVE is one of my favorite Metal bands, thanks for reacting to this. The singer/bassist Peter Steele (RIP) was a very sexual being, and poetic, he reflects that on his lyrics, also the band had a funny and self-critical black humor, they also always pay homage and sometimes make fun to their influences not only musical, but also to the Gothic Subculture, TV Shows, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, etc, in their music like in this song the part of the organ where they take the theme of the TV show The Addams Family. They use guitar feedback as an atmosphere, and other sounds produced by the guitar and bass pickups, they like echos, reverbs and delays to sound huge. The keyboard player Josh Silver is very creative and original in his playing approach adding a lot of details that enhance the whole vibe and hipe the music with a unique personality, also they had a unique guitar sound. The color green is because Peter was into druidism and he liked paganism and this cultures used to worship nature, so the band, also they mostly use autumn imagery, sometimes romantic, gothic and spooky.

You have a bunch of us that LOVE Type O, keep bringing them to us, PLEASE! Also, Kenny Hickey is an underrated singer himself. Might check out Seventh Void "Heaven is Gone"
