After reading Hannah McGill's article in Sight and Sound on typewriters in the movies, I developed a small obsession about the subject, scouring KZfaq for related movie clips. The result is a trilogy of mash-ups, which for obvious reasons I'm calling 'The Typewriter Trilogy'. Part 1 is called The Typewriter and shows the evolution of Jerry Lewis' famous typewriter sketch over the years. Part 2 is called Typewriter Tip Tip Tip, after a song from an early Merchant Ivory film 'Bombay Talkie'. That film, set against the background of the Indian film industry, features a sequence where a film crew shoots a song and dance number on a giant typewriter (called The Fate Machine), which recalls a similar scene from the 1930s Hollywood musical, Ready Willing & Able. This mash-up cuts together scenes from those two films, showing not just how one film echoes the other, but their film industries too. Seeing Ruber Keeler and Lee Dixon dance to a Bollywood song gives me enormous pleasure, and I could so easily have named this after the song their dance was originally set to: 'Too Marvelous For Words.'
