Tyra Banks Had Her Own MLM Makeup Line?! (It Failed)

Tyra Banks had her own MLM makeup line that FAILED miserably... Today I wanted to examine Tyra Beauty, how it started, and what went wrong! Tyra Beauty is a multi level marketing company self-funded by Tyra Banks herself, former supermodel and reality show star of America's Next Top Model in 2015 that closed it's doors and it's direct selling model in 2017. Tyra Beauty stood out because of it's bold marketing and packaging, and many who joined Tyra Beauty were young and impressionable and believed Tyra would never steer them wrong...
Dark Side of ANTM: ** First article is a vice article that describes how antm contestants are mistreated on the show, then after the show aren't provided any career guidance or help to further their careers. Since most are given a bad rap from the show, most of their modeling careers are ruined after the reality show. Because of this, many models after antm go down terrible paths and unfortunate situations that they did not need to go down.

Why do so many people think they have “ground breaking” and “innovative” products? It’s makeup. Everyone knows what makeup is. You didn’t reinvent anything.
@Arlekienen
@Arlekienen 4 жыл бұрын
Not trying to defend this line in particular at all, but new versions or improvements to existing products CAN be revolutionary. A laptop is just a computer, and yet, it was still revolutionary, despite being the same product at the basics. In the same way, if someone discovers a better formula for make-up, using more sustainable ingredients, less harsher chemicals, or a better way of production, more inclusivity with skin shades and types, that is pretty significant. Even if you know what mascara is, new variations in it or improvements can indeed make it revolutionary.

Yes- I think a good way to describe it is products like fenty’s shade range can justify calling themselves innovative because *they are bringing something new to the market* Tyra beauty however, brought nothing new to the market- no new technogy, ingredient, or even business model. It was all done before... except for her ridiculous phrases which I guess one could call innovative 🤣

Its the same in every industry. People often start something they think is one of a kind and its not. I started a cleaning business 3 years ago and I thought it too was one of a kind. But now i'm just a face floating in the sea of saturation. In the end it's all about Niche. makeup is definitely not niche, and cleaning definitely isn't either.

@fakeplasticbees That's very real. If you never see your parents or role-models experiencing challenge and actually working hard to achieve goals, then you grow up without a vision for what that looks like, and that goes for kids who were born wealthy and kids who had very emotionally detached parents who didn't let their kids in to see what their struggles look like. Raising an emotionally intelligent, humble, and empathetic child takes some active participation. It's extremely valuable to let your kids witness you try something and not succeed the first time. It's invaluable to show that you have limitations but you have tenacity, because when you persevere they will internalize that it's not all Rocky montages and shortcuts, and that "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" is really fucking hard.

Thanks for talking about her “Harvard education”. In the ‘college cycle’ of ANTM, she really tried to make it sound like she actually got into Harvard and attended the university. She deadass played clips of herself in a Harvard cap and gown, talked about “graduation” (yes, using the words “graduated” and “graduation”), and posted photos of herself in Harvard apparel 🙄 Never mind the fact that she attended a public course, which is open to ANYONE who can pay the course fee...she was never a student of the actual university. It was basically the business equivalent of a CPR class. If the local medical school hosts a CPR class for the public, it doesn’t mean that everyone who did the CPR class “went to x medical school”, ya know?

She has enough clout to have released her cosmetic line through legitimate channels or create associations with brands like ColorPop and MAC. How is that KZfaqrs like James Charles and Jeffree Starr have makeup lines, as well as Kylie Jenner, but Tyra resorted to an MLM pyramid scheme.
@grenbaygrl1

I will say, I don't think Tyra is as internet/youth-savy enough to make it the way those people have. Both James and Jeffree started online through KZfaq/Instagram and that's both where their fans are and where they advertise their products. Tyra is not a big presence online nor do I think she's knows how to be. I'm thinking back to the episode of ANTM where she taught the contestants how to take mirror selfies and one of her tips was to angle your phone so its cropped out (which no one does lol). If Tyra has any expertise on the modeling industry, it's of the industry back in the 90s and the aughts, but not now

@Jody Nelson My friend sold her line and made 1000$ per month. The problem is she trashed and fired her Beauty tainers. These ladies and Gents worked their butts off to get her products out their and noticed. I admit some of.those products were quite good. I even repurchased the clean machine and the fatlash. But after I read the letter she sent out to everybody that worked as a beautytainer I was pissed. She used those people and flat out lied about how she wanted her makeup line to be.

Tyra’s startup story about the woman stuck in an abusive marriage is hitting way too close to home for me. I am a recovering survivor of domestic violence; last year I was stuck in abusive relationship where I wanted so desperately to leave, but I had no financial ability to do so. Leaving would have meant being on the street. I also was unemployed, because my rapist works at my former job, and I quit after being forced to work with him for over a year. I found myself desperate, depressed, unemployed, and taking abuse from my boyfriend at the time. And if I tried to stand up to him, he’d remind me that my other option was being on the street. :( All of this, while living with crippling PTSD. And as I tried to search for jobs during this dark time, I was approached by several MLMs who tried to recruit me. Thankfully I’m educated on MLMs, so I hastily ran the other way whenever they found me. But it still made me angry. They literally prey on battered women, and other vulnerable, broken members of society. It’s fucking disgusting! And I’m so disappointed in Tyra for trying to do this. Fuck MLMs! Great video, btw. ❤️🦄 you are beautiful.

I’m the male model in the group shot @16:38 ... I flew to Vegas to attend the the TyraBeauty convention to compete against thousands to book that that gig and be one of the top 10. I was the only male winner. We were all supposed to fly out and be put up ANTM style and hang out and shoot. It took two years for the shoot to finally come around after. We were flown into LA from all over the country the night before, put up in an alright hotel super far from set, and our return flights were booked for after the shoot so we had to go wait at the airport for hours until departure. Tyra came to set well after the start of the shoot and wasn’t around too long because she had to leave for an event. Then it took almost a year before the site changed its seasonal ads and then that’s when it all ended without us ever really seeing any of our shots to add to our portfolios. I’m very grateful for the opportunity but we didn’t really receive the package they claimed to be providing. As a model you typically get paid for these types of campaigns but we settled for the experience for said experience to not even size up...

What a surprise, we all deal with being upset differently and a lot of people use humor. And the funny thing is that in Antm she always presented the winners or the contestants as successful working models and the only work or runways they showed were the ones they did at the show. I really thought the winners were like supermodels, now with the internet, I realise that after the show they didn't work at all, or at least not enough to be called a top model. Leila from college edition and Chantelle (Winnie Harlow) are the only exceptions. Some other contestants had some jobs, but not top model level.

This one is pretty basic, but I'd love to see a Mary Kay episode. My mom sold their products for years and while I would say the makeup is actually pretty decent quality, it's still a predatory mlm at the end of the day. By the time my mom had to quit selling due to financial constraints from a divorce and custody battle, she was left with shelves of unsold inventory. To this day, she had a hard time believing MK is a scam, despite telling me that you have to buy a ton of product and recruit other to turn any profit and about the cult-like conventions held to "inspire" the sellers. It wouldn't surprise me at all if MK was part of the reason my mom declared bankruptcy. Anyway, we're doing much better in recent years and I love your videos. Stay healthy!

So both my aunts were in similar situations. One of the reasons my Dad stressed the importance of higher education was so we could, hopefully, have jobs so we could support ourselves if that ever happened. Funny, he never mentioned joining an mlm.

Good for your dad!! Funny how most people don’t mention mlms when they talk about a successful future... except for people who are in mlms!

I have never heard of this! Wow, just wow. I’ve watched a lot of anti-MLM content so I’m really glad to have found you and this information about Tyra Beauty!

My cat distracted me. She was hungry. I don’t like the mean-ness that she displays.

I did too, until someone pointed out that she doesn't even let her guests talk. She just talks over them and keeps talking. I suddenly realized it was true! Then I didn't like her show anymore.

Ugh, Tyra. She's the worst between the illegitimate ANTM claims, yadda. yadda... No one ever made "it" just because of her. Now this too... fantastic.

This was really interesting. Thank you for this video! ♥️ (I’m obsessed with anti mlm video’s and I’m probably watching too many of them, but I really like the way you explain things and your voice is also really pleasant to listen to, so yayy for all your videos!)

Super beautiful as always! This makes me wonder really how many MLMs are out there its been such a behind the curtain world that has always tried to hide the fact that they are mlm im sure they will pop out of the woodwork if they were ever banned in this country

America's Next Top Model used to be one of my guilty pleasure shows growing up, and I really looked up to Tyra as a kind of go-getter person. I had no idea what a MLM was at the time, but everything seemed super sketchy, and she lost all credibility in my book when her past (like her education, some drama with ANTM...) started coming out.
