That looks great but that's an unusable knife. No cleaver should have a perfect mirrored finish like that. It's too pretty and it's more like a shelf knick knack. We would never have a knife like that in the kitchens..

0:58 fun metallurgy fact for you: the volumetric expansion of oxidation/rust of steel is generally between 5-10x. So for whatever size knife you plan on making you'll need 5-10x that by volume in rust to hopefully extract the amount of metal you think you'll need!

@@barbdavis4185 Rust's chemical formula is Fe2O3. At a high enough temperature you can add carbon (commonly called "coke" in the steel industry) plus pure oxygen to Fe2O3 to get pure iron out (plus CO2). There's two reactions that have to happen that ultimately produce pure iron: C2 + O2 --> 2CO + heat 3CO + Fe2O3 + heat --> 2Fe + 3CO2 This is generally how smelting or a blast furnace works to make steel from iron ore.

That's a nice looking blade, I feel like that was a lot of gold to put in the handle to not have most of it be seen though. what I think would have looked really awesome is if you had put down the CF in a stripe pattern so it would have been black and gold stripes on the handle.

I couldn't figure out what you were doing melting the plastic over the handle, and then I was really confused about the carbon fiber until you started sticking it to the plastic, and then it all made sense. It turned out awesome. It would've been awesome if you had made it from scratch, but the fact that you started with the rusty knife made it even more impressive.

@WCIIIReiniger
@WCIIIReiniger Жыл бұрын
@@Kazeshini11 also I think restoration should keep as much of the original as possible. Replacing the wooden handle with a modern carbon fibre one is totally contrary to that. Why would you want to take away the wood, that had been held by many people (that are probably no longer living)?

@@WCIIIReiniger Exactly. Besides my chef's knife, all my other knives we're my mom's and when she passed they became my uncle's (I was a teenager) and when he passed they became mine. Unless the blade breaks or becomes unusable (chef's knife had a huge chip in the blade) I'm keeping them.

Absolutely wonderful work! I do however have 1 concern. You used UV resin on the inside of the scales. You've basically cured just the edges where the uv light could reach, but if you ever take those handle scales off you'll have a ton of uncured resin just inside there. It would have been smarter to use a 2 part epoxy to keep it together. Just advice for next time

That was wonderful! I really appreciate all of the effort you put into this one to create that genuine mirror finish. It was astonishing to see just how flat you got the blade. You probably already know this but an amazing tip someone gave me regarding the finish on resin and removing bubbles is; If you're trying to remove surface bubbles from epoxy resin on a flat surface (not a handle like you were), then using a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol modifies the surface tension and creates a perfectly flat bubble free finish! Just spritz over the top lightly and watch them melt away. It doesn't damage the epoxy resin at all, or change the hardening time. Just a fine misting, not a spray at the surface will suffice
