Tyumen is a city in Russia, located on the banks of the Tura River, left tributary of the Tobol, the administrative center of the Tyumen region and the Tyumen district. The distance to Moscow 2163 km. Geographically, Tyumen belongs to Western Siberia, administratively - to the Ural Federal district. Officially, Tyumen is also the regional center of two Autonomous okrugs (districts) - Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Districts, and together with them constitutes the largest region of the Russian Federation. The first traces of human presence on the territory of modern Tyumen is found since the Neolithic age, on the banks of Andreevskoe Lake (Kozlovskaya and Koshkinskaya archaeological culture of the Neolithic period) and on the left Bank of the Tura River (Sargatskaya culture of the Early Iron Age). In the 13th-16th centuries, Chingi-Tura (Chimgi-Tura), the capital of Tyumen khanate, was located on the banks of the Tyumenka River. Officially, Tyumen is the first city (or first settlement) of the Russian Empire, which appeared in the Siberian lands. The town is obliged its appearance to Yermak, the conqueror of Siberia, who four hundred years ago had liberated these places from the henchmen of the Golden Horde. The construction of the Russian Tyumen Burg was started on July 29, 1586, not far from Ching-Tours, by decree of Tsar Fedor Ivanovich (son of Ivan the Terrible). Tuymen was founded on an ancient caravan route from Central Asia to the Volga River region, on the so called “Tyumen portage”, for which nomads of Southern Siberia were fighting for centuries. In the first years the city was attacked by Tatars and Kalmyks. Waterways connected Tyumen with the Far North and the Far East. The city was inhabited mostly by settlers from Perm, Solvychegodsk and Ustiug. The first inhabitants of Tyumen were boyars (the upper class), streltsy (infantry with firearms) and Cossacks (military class). One of the first Yamskaya settlements of Siberia was founded in Tyumen, in 1605. In 1618, the monk Niphon founded Trinity monastery. In 1640-1642 years with Governor Gregory Baryatinsky, Central part of the city was fortified, and settlements (Yamskaya Sloboda, Tatar-Bukhara Sloboda, Kozhevennaya Sloboda) formed by this time, were surrounded by wall. Gradually, with the disappearance of a military threat, the primary occupation of the townspeople were crafts. Extensive development has reached the blacksmith, bell, soap, leather production. In 1695 the city was a fire, in which the wooden city burned down. After this, the stone construction began. Since 1709 Tyumen was part of the Siberian province, and in 1782 became a district town of Tobolsk governorship. In the 19th century along with the decline of Tobolsk (the centre of the Siberian province), the city enters a period of prosperity. The TRANS-Siberian iron road, laid through the town, gave a special impulse to development of Tyumen. Count Constantine Possiet insisted that this railroad should pass through Tyumen, that’s why he was awarded the title of honorary citizen of the town. In 1836, the first in Siberia steamship was launched in Tyumen. Leather production was the main production in Tyumen in the 19th century. In the second half of the 19th century, there were up to seventy tanneries in the town. Tyumen was also an important center of trade. From 1845 to the early 20th century, Tyumen annually held large Vasilievskaya fair, the city also hosted an international fair of Fat. By the end of the century there were more than 10 educational institutions, including Aleksandrovskoe real school (founded in 1879), women's school and County school (opened in 1883), and several parochial schools, the oldest of which Znamenskoye was founded in 1796. The oldest building in the city is Holy Trinity monastery, built in the early 17th century. Znamensky Cathedral was built in Tyumen In 1786, it is an surprisingly elegant building in the Russian Baroque style, with a distinctive tiered and ornaments. From 1935 to 1944 Tyumen was part of the Omsk region. The Tyumen region was founded on August 14, 1944. During the Great Patriotic War, industrial potential of the city has grown considerably due to enterprises to evacuees from the European part of the USSR. Interestingly, during the war Lenin's body was evacuated in Tyumen; the current building of Tyumen state agricultural Academy temporarily acted the functions of the mausoleum. The main air gate of the city is the international airport "Roshchino". Tyumen is an important hub of the Sverdlovsk railway on the TRANS-Siberian railway, from which there is a line on Tobolsk - Surgut - Nizhnevartovsk, which was built in 1966. Different railway lines go from Tyumen to Ekaterinburg, New Urengoy, Nizhnevartovsk, Omsk. After opening in the Tyumen region in the 1960-ies large deposits of oil and gas, the whole life of the city was subordinated to the execution of oilfield services and transport functions needed to meet the needs of the Tyumen North.
