UPDATE: do not go down this mine if you don not have experience exploring mines! Do not explore mines on your own ! Always tell somewhere where you are going and your expected return time, and what to do if you do not make a pre arranged call at that time. These are crazy times were living right now, everyone’s a bit on edge. Stay safe everybody.
In this video i solo explore the abandoned workings of Tywarnhale Copper mine, and go and take a look at the inclined rainway which remains are still acessible deep underground.
Tywarnhale mine sits on the north of the valley close to the coastal town of Porthtowan.
This mine started life as Wheal Rock in 1750, renamed United Hills mine in 1809 before becoming known as Tywarnhale mine in the early 1900s, when it started to be used as a training site for the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London.
This mine had one of the first mine shafts in Cornwall to be drained using an electric pump.
Please note exploring mines is an extremely hazardous activity and it should only be attempted by experienced persons with the correct equipment and suitable experience.
It is not recommended ever to explore mines on your own.

I dont think it has, i went down the upper entrance earlier today, unless there is another one I don't know about. But the one I went down is the one with the second ladder (out of about ten) being loose as that's how I knew which one you was referring to

@@maggi666 no it was on a Facebook group called Cornish explorers. I have been putting some quite good content on there for years but it would seem the site is run by armchair explorers who don’t want people going out and showing people these mines . They deleted me and removed my link. It’s no problem, I will divert my energy into other pages from now on. 🙂

Our Steve is a stickler for safety equipment, which you have in abundance! Hes a great guy with great group of guys he explores with! They're recrntly lost onr good friend to covid.

@@maggi666 oh that’s not good. I think I have been lucky so far I don’t know anyone who has passed away with it. We are a bunch of keen mine explorers many of us are rope access and cave dive trained, sometimes we downplay the danger element for a bit of comedy value but we are all safe and want to come home to our family’s at the end of the day. I think it’s a pretty crazy time right now. People are turning on each other over the silliest of things . I haven’t left my home for months other than to go to work and I go and film this one lovely day off on my own within cycling distance of my house and people I thought were my friends totally lose the plot over it. I have a good few others planned which for sure are going to ruffle some feathers . So stay tuned 🙂

A mid week evening it’s unlikely you will see anyone else down there. I have been quite a few times at weekends and never met anyone else down there so far although I do see a few photos of the place popping up so people do visit

Wonder if that blue is copper oxide or copper sulfate the colors are similar and hypnotizing. No idea how some can conquer their fear of heights, that ladder was full on terrifying.

I’m afraid mineral collecting is one thing I have never really got into ! Seen a few patches and know where there are some , but never taken tools to recover any

I wonder what the quality of the surrounding rock/ore could be. With all the evidence within the mine, why hasn't some company done a study of the possibility of turning it into an Open-Pit operation? With as little as 5-10 % grade it could turn a profit.

They would never allow that near such a nice village next to the Cornish coastline ! Maybe 50 years ago ... but not now !

@BenoCam It's not just that, but mainly because most of the ore is far too deep and in near vertical seams. It's not like coal that sits in nice horizontal seams

these videos are great! are the stopes natural voids/caves in the rock that are then mined out into much bigger spaces? or are they entirely man made?

Thanks Matthew. They are entirely man made . The miners chased out the mineral viens or “lodes” some of which made these large open spaces, very often at an angle of between 45-90 degrees but they do vary depending on which mine. The miners call these hollowed about areas “stopes” . In some mines the load was chased right up to the surface. In many of them it continues down well below the water table and so had pumps to keep the workings dry. They had different shafts used for pumping water, hauling ore or man ways that were access points for the workers to access the mine.

Yeah it’s not too hard. It’s opened right up now someone’s cut the lock off the top hatch too so you can go through the lot as a one way trip if need be

I was there today. When you reach that first area full of rubbish from the shaft, which way do you head? I wasn't sure whether to go down low or cross those large boulders from the collapse. I didn't have much time and didn't want to rush it. Thanks.

Cross over the rubbish pile then a short distance after you need to head down to the left.. underneath a large slab of rock that looks like it’s going to let go at any moment . Then head along past the blue stains and down on your left again through the stoping, down and you will drop into the deep adit.

Looks like a fun little trek!! Does the incline railway see daylight? How deep does it go? Any idea as to it’s length? How many levels? What’s at the top and the bottom of the incline railway? Any skips still on their rails?

Hiya , the railway goes right up to surface but there is now a concrete slab with a small hatch that always used to be locked but I’m led to believe is now open . I would guess at it being over 100m in length . There are 2 levels mid way (I think ) no skips , they probably pulled them out and scrapped them 🙁

Is this the slab that is next to the hut on the surface? I grew up on the estate at the bottom of the lane there. The shaft next to the hut at the top used to be boarded over and have a big metal frame around it. The boards were loose so we used to take a couple up then sit on a plane of wood across 2 metal beams with out legs dangling over the side into the black void below. If I'd known then how far down it went I wouldn't have done it 😬🤣.

There are supposed to be some very “hot” areas of radiation, particularly down by bottalick and wheal terras up by st austel. They even pulled some uranium out of that one

Sure. S Terres is on the web stating that,as people put down testing equipment and certain places was equivalent to a CT scan for a hour exposure. Even the mine entrance was reading quite high. Not sure why people would want to go down there but hobbies are hobbies I guess. Well I've had CT scan so it's relevant I guess. Just don't tell them about the elephant foot .
