Chris teaches us about U-Boats and mechanical rubber and Moose teaches us about using fiberglass insulation for acoustical applications.

A long, serrated bread knife makes a good insulation cutter. :) btw: I would use a respirator ANY time when handling fibreglass / rockwool insulation. Run a big UV light in proximity to where you are working & you'll see how many fibres are floating in the air around you.

Nice work!!! I would like to ask you, how should be the distance between the joists? And how should be the height of the joist? Thank you very much

I would have used the ROXUL Sound & Fire green insulation with slag as it has much better qualities for controlling sound transmission and is what I used when building my studio. As previously mentioned by SumatoborukiSaru a serrated bread knife works the best for cutting the insulation to preferred size. Another tip would be to start laying the insulation along the end wall and work your way out so you don't paint yourself in the corner as she did in this video. Less chance to step on the insulation as you will always have an open space between the floor joists to walk. Also it really is not necessary to staple the 'U-Boats' as the load on the floor will keep them in place,... as long as your floor is level,... and it should be! The less metal you have in the floor joists the better as this will prevent/lesson sound wave transmission throughout the entire structure. You certainly don't want a Tacoma Narrows Bridge type disaster to occur in the studio due to a resonance frequency! LOL.

That insulation cuts best with a pair of large shears. I wouldn't install it without using a respirator though. As for the sound deadening properties I'd spend the extra money and get open cell foam.

how are you going to frame 4" wall studs on top of a floor frame thats 2" in width?

+John Keefe I'm guessing they are going to frame it on top of the sub flooring once it's installed.

Why did you use standard insulation rather than something like rockwool.

There is one problem with the video, and to me it was a big one. You didn't answer the basic questions. Why exactly the insulation. Why the R30. Quick description of physics behind that. The prolonged episodes of silent labor should have involved constructive advice. Time/info ratio was less than adequate. My constructive two cents. You guys seem to be amazing professionals, and I admire the fact you made an effort to educate for free. Greatness is close, tighten it up. God bless.

Fiber glass insulation. Really nasty stuff if you don't have precautions when working with it. It's literally fibered glass, so it's very sharp and thus irritating or even dangerous to tissues like skin or eyes, god forbid if it gets to your lungs trough air (It's very light so it gets airborne really easily)

You can replace it with rock wool. still not so nice stuff to work with, but much more manageable than fiber glass.Luis Pedro Martins

Speaking of animals and insulation, if you store your extra rolls of fiberglass insulation in an outdoor shed waiting for your next project, be sure to include some rodent control, because them mices will shred, soil & destroy it for you, and they don't mind "the itchies" at all. Same goes for acoustic foam, cardboard, paper, fabric, anything they can shred to make a nest. Also, I wonder what evil entity would want a seemingly harmless bunch of geeks out of the building... Amityville horror?
